  1. I think the biggest anxiety for me is moving my pets. Me and my partner have a little hamster and my pride a joy - my little newt. She is fully aquatic and although she could easily be transported in a small tupperware container - the airlines will not have it since amphibians are not considered "personal pets." I would hate to see anything bad happen to her since she is my desk buddy so I'm trying to work out arrangements for her. I'm also concerned about the California heat (I'm from PA) and its affect on her Hopefully things will work out for us!
  2. University of CA, Irvine - Visual Studies PhD, with funding Turned down MA offers at UCSB (Cultural Studies), UMD (Art History), UKansas (Art History) and Dartmouth (Cultural Studies)
  3. You aren't too far at all! I currently live in Southampton (Bucks County) and I received my BA in East Asian Studies from Ursinus College in Collegeville (both are about an hour or so from Bethlehem) My focus is in Japanese contemporary art with a large emphasis in cultural studies/theory. I'm about 90% sure that I'm going but I have to hold out for the financial aid before I can give them a definite yes. I will also be checking out University of MD at the end of this month just to make sure that I'm making the right decision at the end. It is so exciting to meet someone else who was not only admitted but also from my area! It has all been really overwhelming (in the most positive way!) My partner will be tagging along with me so it has been a real blend of excitement and nervousness about the big move across country. I really hope that we find out funding information sooner rather than later. Since April is quickly approaching, I have my fingers crossed that we will know by the end of the month?
  4. Hi everyone - I'm new to the thread (and forum for that matter) so I've been feeling my way around. I've applied to several schools thus far and I've received acceptance to the UC Irvine Visual Studies PhD, U of Maryland College Park East Asian Art History MA, and U of Kansas EA AH MA. I've received some meager funding from Kansas, but I'm really interested in working with professors from Irvine and Maryland thus far. Irvine is the logical choice for me -- I'm a theory nut and my focus is Japanese contemporary art and cultural studies so it feels like a great fit for me. Since I haven't heard anything regarding my financial package, I'm not ruling UM out as a solid alternative. I'm really curious if anyone else has been accepted to these programs and what their impressions were thus far! I have my BA in East Asian Studies from a small east coast liberal arts college, so regardless of where I end up matriculating, I'm sure the experience will be worlds different from what I am used to. Also, University of Maryland is having a Symposium on the 28th-29th and has extended an invitation to those accepted. I was wondering if anyone here was planning on attending? It has been awesome following along with everyone's experiences so far. Congrats to those who have gotten in and good luck to those who are still waiting! .
  5. I'm not applying for EAS, but I'm coming from an East Asian Studies BA. My research interests revolve around Japanese contemporary art and critical cultural theory so I've tried to best accommodate those with the following schools: University of California Irvine - PhD Visual Studies, Japan focus - Accepted University of California Santa Barbara - MA Japanese Cultural Studies - Waiting to hear University of Maryland College Park - MA East Asian Art History - Accepted University of Kanasas - MA East Asian Art History - Accepted Dartmouth - MALS Japan Focus - Waiting to hear (My Backup) I think no matter where I matriculate, I've gotten a great sense that I'll be working hand in hand with the EAS Lang/Lit departments in my endeavors. Who are you waiting on Spectacled?
  6. I was also accepted into UCI for the Visual Studies PhD (and I'm also from Pennsylvania - small world jbear!) I'm extremely excited - it was my first choice school as well. I also have not heard anything about the financial package, but I did receive an e-mail today about their online SIR System (to accept/decline?) I really would like to know where the money will situate me before I sign my name on the dotted virtual line! The professors have been great at answering my questions and been very kind over the telephone - I'm absolutely thrilled! Jbear - what is your general focus for the program? I'm always curious how others ended up on a similar path! Thanks charmed and mochi for the info - I've lived in the city all my life so I've never had much of a need for a license or a car... It looks like I have my work cut out for me in that department
  7. I just wanted to add to the list of those who have not heard! I applied for the Cultural Studies MA and I have not heard ANYTHING from them but I assume we will hear by the end of March at least? It is very unlikely that I will be attending there at this point since I got into my first choice, but I would still like to know either way!
