The State Department bit might be cause for some concern since the final approval comes from them. But funding should have been locked in for this competition cycle, right? I feel like something as complex as the Fulbright funding process would be completed in the last budget cycle. I don't know how any of this works to be perfectly honest. I really hope the political climate does not impact this Fulbright round or future rounds. It's the Department of State's Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs that is in charge of the Fulbright...maybe they won't impacted by the resignations?

I had an interview last year and after asking a former winner about their experience it seems like some of the questions are pretty standard: Why did you choose that specific university, why do you want to go to the UK, how will studying in the UK impact you...essentially the application. The other questions were about what you would do while you were there (you as an ambassador to the UK) and how engaged you would be with people in the UK (learning about the culture and society at large). I hope this helps some!

Congrats Medievalist!!!

Congrats Horb!!! I'm so happy for you

I don't know but it seems like a good torture technique...

Yeah this amount of anxiety is definitely unsustainable if we have to wait until Friday to find out!! I was thinking about this as well...I mean I would personally send it out right as I was running out the door...but that's just me avoiding my responsibilities! lol Well it looks like it will be either tomorrow or the day after tomorrow...or next week... who knows!

You have no idea how true the "lets fund cancer research" is! While it is an area that is immensely important and greatly impacts everyone in society...but it would be nice if other areas got their chance to shine! The last two Fulbrighter's for Leicester have been in Microbiology-cancer research, so I'm hoping this year breaks that streak. Your research on moss sounds like you would have quite the adventure out in the field! My fingers will be crossed for you! I have a friend who is currently in Germany on a Fulbright and he was interviewed by the local news on the night of the election...he's been trying to explain and assure everyone about the results since then. We absolutely need programs like Fulbright right now that will create positive interactions with citizens around the world and provide a more personal face to the idea of what an "American" is.

Thank you for sharing your experience! It's kinda funny I almost didn't pursue having the school write them for me. My advisor told me that there were a lot of mixed feedback from Fulbright and other advisors about if the letters of affiliation were needed or not. Turns out that several individuals who were awarded the Fulbright had letters of affiliation even though the online requirements say it is not expected. At the very least I recommend to anyone reading this and applying for the UK partnership award to apply for the UK university as soon as you can! Last year I sent in my acceptance email to the Fulbright office (end of January) to inform them I had been accepted into the program. I'm not sure if it was the reason I got an interview or not, but it certainly didn't hurt my application. Though not having the letter of affiliation won't be an absolute deal breaker, so if you don't have one there is hope!

I totally understand fearing the sting of a "no". Last year I was lucky enough to get through the first round and this year I think I have an even stronger application with my letters from the UK school I'm applying for but I'm still paranoid about the odds. The odds for the first round are the harshest, after this round it's more like a 50/50 chance. This is the link to the spreadsheet: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1AlU2xDiiVhQjK3quPy6qXJuhgXYghzzG8L4YNT0unX0/edit#gid=929221519 It goes back to like 2009 or something. The first page lists the notification dates for round 1 and all of the countries round 2 results. Feel free to fill out the 2017 year with as much info as you feel comfortable divulging! Good luck to you as well! My fingers will be crossed for you

The spreadsheet is also less full than previous years! For me personally, I'm only now starting to get anxious about the wait since the first round notification is so close. It also helps that this isn't my first year applying. I remember last year how I was frantically searching for any kind of info about what to expect and when I should expect it. This year I'm half anxious and half chill...it's a weird combo.

You could also try apps like Semper, Memrise or Duolingo to supplement any kind of other training or education you're receiving. At the very least they may help with vocab!
-
I personally think we will find out the week of the 16th. My bet would be Wednesday early afternoon. Since that's what last years was like...middle-ish of the week in the afternoon. You never know though! They could be early this year!

November just flew by! My time was mostly occupied by waiting for any updates on my Marshall application. They have a much more timely review process (they also get fewer applications). December is hopefully going to go quickly as well! I'm mostly feeling really excited to find out if I've moved on to the next round...my fingers are crossed!

Horb I would definitely send a polite reminder. He should definitely understand and you can always send a well-written thank you note once the stressful application time is over. He certainly had plenty of time (a little over a month) and a polite, friendly reminder is very reasonable! Good luck!

Thanks Chethedoctor for the supportive words it's nice to know that there is a precedence for alternates moving on.
-
Alternate for UK. I'm going to remain positive and hopefully the uncertainty doesn't drive me crazy. Does anyone know how often alternates actually move to principal status? I understand it's nearly impossible to estimate how many principals will decline or if funds become available. Good luck to everyone still waiting to find out!
-
I'm really shocked I'm saying this but..... I'm glad tomorrow is a Monday! Hopefully there will be a steady stream of notifications this week!
-
I was told the same thing sat0ri, end of the month. Personally I'm betting on next week (mainly because I really, really, really want to find out sooner rather than later!). Regardless the wait will be over soon...I can't wait for all of this constant checking and anxiousness to end
-
lol that's exactly how I'm feeling! I just want to know! Congrats though to everyone who has received good news and the best of luck to those who have not.
-
I was really hoping it was going to be today! Maybe this week? It's all guess work and speculation at this point... Both. Definitely both! At least we will find out voting results first...
-
It looks like Laos was updated and with recent events in Egypt it seems like their program has been cancelled this year.
-
Beautifully said! I'm excited and nervous for today... Hopefully today is the day!
-
Congrats! I'm always excited to hear from fellow UK applicants what will be the focus of your research/study? Waiting is the hardest part right now! During the phone interview the woman said late March but I'm really hoping it's earlier.... Best of luck to you!
-
Congrats to you both! It's great to hear such exciting news Don't forget to fill out the spreadsheet! You don't have to fill out any personal information just the details about country and time you heard back. Present and future applicants will be grateful https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1AlU2xDiiVhQjK3quPy6qXJuhgXYghzzG8L4YNT0unX0/edit#gid=1893879233
