  1. Thanks to everyone for the great advice! I have decided on Fossil Fuel Geology, primarily because it is only offered every other year. The other courses are either offered every semester or annually. My plan is to take Remote Sensing next fall and hopefully fit in a couple of programming/stats courses along the way. I would like to take Linear Algebra as well, but like was mentioned above, I am not sure how much that offers by itself. Thanks, again.
  2. Hello all, I am an M.S. student studying structural geology and deformation at the University of Nebraska starting in the fall. I am looking for some opinions on course scheduling. I have room for an additional class this semester, but I cannot decide which would be most useful for my future. Here are the options I am considering: Linear Algebra Differential Equations Introduction to Remote Sensing Random Grad Level Statistics Course Random Programming Course Fossil Fuel Geology and Exploration A little background about me -- I am interested in working in the oil and gas industry, however I am not sure how feasible that is with the downturn in oil prices. I want to display a diverse skill set to future employers. I have a decent amount of experience with GIS. I have taken math through Calculus III. Apart from a tiny bit of MATLAB, I have virtually no programming background. I doubt Fossil Fuel Geology would be much use to me unless I get a conventional geology job, but it's probably the course I am most interested in along with Linear Algebra. Any opinions are greatly appreciated.
  3. Question for the current grad students -- what % of your stipend gets taken out for taxes? I am trying to prepare a budget estimate for grad school. I know not all stipends are taxed, but the ones I am looking at will be. Thanks.
  4. I currently have a TA offer from the University of Nebraska and an RA offer from Tulsa. I am trying to make my decision between these two schools. Does anyone have any insight into either of these programs? Specifically, I am curious about industry connections, or lack thereof. Being located in Oklahoma, I imagine Tulsa gets some recruiters. However, it's a small school so probably not connected on the scale of Oklahoma State, Oklahoma, or the Texas schools. UNL has offered me a higher stipend, but with Tulsa I have 12 month support available, if I cannot procure an internship. There are certainly advantages to each program. I have also spoken to and like both potential advisors and am interested in their research. The thought of having to turn down one of them is disappointing. I am currently leaning toward Nebraska, but I am looking for any advice or information that could provide clarity to my decision. Thanks.
  5. Congrats. I was accepted to Tulsa, and I am currently awaiting funding information. My POI wants to offer me an RA. She told me I should hear something in the next two weeks (this was on the 11th, I believe). So, hopefully there will be news soon. I am trying to decide between Tulsa and Nebraska, and would love to be able to make that decision soon.
  6. Thanks! I actually got a text message from my POI informing me good news was on the way. This was about 10 days ago. Then a couple days later my status changed on the GAMES account. Last Saturday, I received my official offer letter in the mail. Good luck I hope you hear back soon.
  7. I got accepted into the University of Nebraska with a TA position and summer fellowship. Exciting times. Still waiting on Tulsa and New Mexico State, but I am not sure it even matters at this point. Sorta regretting not applying to some more prestigious schools...sorta.
  8. Someone posted a rejection from Nebraska today. I am waiting to hear from them, so at least that was something. Sorry for the person that did not get in. It's brutal going through this process and getting excited only to see that rejection email.
  9. I think Alison Duvall at UW is awesome. Her talk at GSA last year was great. I would love to work with her.
  10. Thank you for the response. Does anyone know anything about Tulsa's geology program? I have a faculty member who has expressed interest in working with me, and their research is a good fit. I don't know much about the program. The application deadline is Feb. 1, so it's a close call but I think I can make it. Any info is greatly appreciated.
  11. Is there anyone here who previously applied to Nebraska? When did you hear from them? Their application was due on the 15th, so I know they are not making admission decisions yet. I am trying to get a sense of what their timeline typically looks like. Thanks.
