@KnowVac Congrats on the news!!! It's so nice to be able to breathe.... ? I also agree with @Cedodge and @liesandfish about the preview/interview question. @Partinrn as far as JJay goes... I was told that they cut the initial applicant pool/group down to 24 and only can offer full funding for 8. Definitely sweating this one out. -

@liesandfish SO jealous!!! I totally wish I was in your position!! Very, very happy for you. Just like @ThesisTerror724... I have to make it through the in-person interview. Although, I think at Rutgers you are pretty much in. Can I ask... if it is too personal I understand (and I am not trying to overstep)... Did you have a faculty recommendation from Rutgers? I'm still at the super nervous stage of waiting it out for the in-person interview and praying that it all goes well. FINGERS CROSSED!!!! -

@altikr25 Congrats on making the decision!!! I am totally with @liesandfish and @phdincrim2016 ... waiting it out is such a stressful process. I wish that I was able to apply to more than two schools... especially after being denied by one of the two schools already [not that I am complaining.. I know that I am fortunate to at least still be in it]. Is anyone going to the Friday, March 4th in-person interview at John Jay? Also... just a general question for you guys... The JJay program is hosting a dinner event the night before in the city (apparently there are a lot of out-of-towners attending)... I should definitely go right?! Does it look like I am not as interested if I don't go? -

@liesandfish I absolutely think that it is more than OK to email about it, given the amount of time that has passed. -

@ThesisTerror724 & @liesandfish Thank you so much for those responses!! They really help me out a lot. I am not too sure how this process goes on from here for John Jay... other than what I have heard from past applicants/students. In sum.. From what I have gathered.. There are anywhere from 80-100 applicants that apply and that they try to select 24-27 for the in-person interviews. Then they admit 8 or 9 students from that group. Honestly, I am not sure how accurate that is.. but that is why I am stressing even more about the in-person interview than I normally would. So... thank you so much for those tips. -

@nerdyjilly Have you looked into John Jay's part-time POA Ph D program? One of my close friends applied for the Fall 2015 class and got in. He is very happy with the program. Just another option to consider. -

@nerdyjilly Thanks so much. I am really interested in learning more about GIS and environmental criminology. If I had to be super specific, I would say that I would really like to focus on crime in PSAs (Public Service Areas [Housing Developments] in NYC). It especially blows my mind that overall violent crime rates are down in NYC, except when you look at homicides, rapes, aggravated assaults (Assault 1 and Assault 2 [NYS PL]), robberies, and shooting incidents [in public housing developments; from 2006 all the way through 2013]. Additionally, out of ALL of the developments throughout the city, you only see this spike in 15 developments. I would really like to focus my research on working on that problem. Even though I am very interested in policing and evidence-based policy changes, I am also becoming very interested in corrections (specifically the rehabilitative ideal). I really support the idea of evidence-based correctional practices as well. I think in times like this we need to expand upon the 1974 Martinson Report and show that there are correctional practices that do work for some people... etc. Although there has been an immense amount of research published which supports this... it simply seems as though policy makers/influencers have avoided acknowledging this. Anyway, sorry for the long rant. I have my fingers crossed for you with the new job!! I wish you nothing but the best! -

@nerdyjilly I am sorry to hear that, I hope that you hear from your other schools soon. Also... I did not get to make the info session (conflict of scheduling). I did get an e-mail from John Jay today. Their in person interview day is scheduled for Friday, March 4th. Fingers crossed that the interview goes well... -

I actually would like to thank @zephiwho for your post yesterday. It was extremely thoughtful of you and it was nice to hear such kind words for those of us who have not received good news yet (but may still ). Also, I agree with @liesandfish ... I believe the hope/aim/goal of this board is to remain positive, encouraging, and supportive [not only for those of us going through this extremely stressful process now but for future ph d applicants]. I am very grateful for @phdincrim2016's post about Rutgers because it let some of us [me] process the coming news sooner. Also, best of luck to @judiths ... I know that you may be down about being wait listed.. but stay strong for those of us who were not even considered. I can't say that I am not super bummed out about Rutgers, but I am still hoping to hear from John Jay. I unfortunately have extremely limited options of schools to apply to since I am not able to move. Lastly, I just want to say I am proud to be a part of this field because with all of these posts it would seem as though we have extremely qualified candidates, applying to amazing schools, who are very passionate and will go on to expand the field in positive ways. -

First... I just want to say that I am SO glad that I found this thread. I feel a lot better knowing that I am not the only one obsessively checking my e-mail. I was just wondering if anyone else has heard back from Rutgers yet?? I saw one post that acceptance e-mails went out this week.. I checked the "check your status" portal and it still says "No decision" (which is better than the alternative). So yeah.. hoping that I still have a shot.
