  1. Hey i got finally off the waiting list and got accepted at rutgers I'm so happy !!! My first choice university!!
  2. Hi !! I am in the exact same position, just that I applied to Rutgers University for a PhD. I emailed the program director and asked whether applicants can find out their position on the waiting list. Luckily I am number 1, but they sent out invitations to 13 applicants but only have a place for 8 or 9 students. So far I saw in another forum that one person has already declined. Meaning, 5 more people have to decline so that I get a spot. If I was you, I would politely ask whether you can know your position on the list, so you can decide whether it is worth waiting. I would advise to keep hanging in there but wouldn't expect an answer that soon. I heard that a lot of people wait until last minute to make a decision. If you haven't heard anything on the 15th/16th of April, I would contact the department again.
  3. @KnowVac @1428 Elm St thank you so much. I will post the outcome in this forum.
  4. Thank you. 13/15 who have visited Rutgers were accepted. the school can only accept 8 -10 students, so if 6 people decline, I have a chance (in worst case scenario). I will most likely have to wait for another 3 weeks to hear about the decisions.
  5. OK, I guess I cannot do anything but wait anyway. I hate that feeling :S
  6. @ThesisTerror724 Btw did Rutgers tell you how many applicants they can accept this year?
  7. @ThesisTerror724 I absolutely understand your decision. UCI is an amazing program and I would not decline this offer neither. Best of luck!! What is your research interest? I actually know exactly what I want to research and had a Skype conversation with one of the professors at Rutgers before I applied. Unfortunately I did terrible on the GRE I guess that's the reason why I am on the waiting list. I found it very expensive to apply for all these programs. Can we receive a refund if we have been declined? @liesandfish oh that makes me happy!!! Yes, luckily you do not have the same research interest!! And I completely have to agree with you, I love learning from other people's viewpoints and experiences. eg. I study Criminology in the UK, so we learn a lot about crime prevention strategies and public opinion on crime. In my home country (Austria) we do not have such a punitive thinking about criminals. However when I worked in the United States and spoke to some of the locals, I experienced a strong disapproval of reintegrating ex-offenders. I was really shocked, as I strongly believe in rehabilitation. Thus, I guess it would be a great opportunity for me to study in the USA. I would love to become a comparative criminologist/penologist. When looking at prisons in Norway and then at USA, you see a tremendous and shocking difference. I would not blame the justice system solely, as this is highly influenced by public opinion. Very interesting, you should google Norway prisons and you will be surprised!!
  8. Also to all of you: Everyone of you sound very educated and experienced! I am 23 years old and when reading your comments in this forum, I feel really young. If I cannot get into a PhD, what work experience would you advise me to get?
  9. Thank you for your response. I might have to wait till next week as I think those 15 applicants at rutgers receive their offer this week. Then the people who decide against it, will contact the program director afterwards. I am just so stressed about it, as I will conduct my masters dissertation in Chicago but do not know when I need to book the flight back to Europe. This all depends on my visa (the US does not let me enter the country unless I prove I have a flight back to Europe within 90 days). Is there anyone in this forum who attended the visit at Rutgers but will not accept their offer? And @ThesisTerror724 what did you think about Rutgers? How was the visit? what do you think are the benefits of rutgers or UCI?
  10. congratulations on all your offers and decisions. UCI sounded amazing but I did not apply as I believed I wouldn't get in. (I regret it now)
  11. Thanks for your reply and I have not been online here for a couple of days. However, I still haven't heard anything and when do people usually decline their offers? Eg. I am on the wait list for Rutgers (first choice) and I wonder when I will hear back. as far as I was able to read, they want to accept all 15 applicants who went to Rutgers the past weekend. I haven't emailed the school in a month, and not sure if I should contact them again.
  12. Congratulations to all of you, who were accepted! I am still waiting to hear from Maryland. Honestly, I hate waiting but there is literally nothing I can do against it. Do you guys know whether we can find out the ranking in a waiting list? Or is it better to not email the department again, as I do not want to appear annoying? I emailed already before about my ranking, however I was told that this is their task for this week. This was two weeks ago, but never received an email about my ranking. What do you guys think?
  13. thank you guys. Fingers crossed!!! It was my first time applying in the US and I have to say it was very expensive. If anyone doesn't get into a PhD in the US, England offers funded phD positions, plus application doesn't cost you a penny.
  14. since finding this forum, it makes me more worried about my competition!
  15. Hi, I have been waitlisted at rutgers phd program. Do you guys know how many people are usually on such a list? I am kinda sad because I really wanted to go to rutgers. I applied for Maryland too, so I will wait for their response.
