  1. Thanks you too. I'm moving from Mass. My stuff is sitting at my parents in FL and then going to be shipped out to me in CA. So I'm moving about as far as possible, lol. We start at UCI in late September, I think the 23rd or so.
  2. I'll be at UCI. Brian, I know my cohort is 10 (I think 20 admitted) people and we have at least one person in it from CSULB masters program, so they definitely get students into UCI from there. Also, some of the UCI candidates sometimes teach classes part time once their funding runs out at CSULB, so maybe you'll get to know some of them as well.
  3. UC Irvine for me. I chose based on who I wanted to work with and UCI was one of the only places that has both criminology and law and society that has people studying the use of forensic science in the courtrooms from a Science and Technology Studies standpoint and a Psych standpoint, etc.
  4. NYU's program did not accept applications this year. I don't know that they will be accepting applications in the future either. The department is going through massive changes right now. AU has Justice Law and Society, UC Irvine has Criminology Law and Society and UF has Criminology Law and Society. The Berkeley program tends to admit people that already have advanced degrees (J.D. and M.A. in other fields), so that works to your advantage. You may also want to check out Philosophy and Sociology departments because there are some that do Phil of Law and Soc. of Law. It really depends on what exactly your interests are as to the value. If you really want to teach or study interdisciplinary law then sure they could be worth your time. If not, then probably not.
  5. HA, Post is from 2009 - person was last active over a year ago. Not gonna be much help. Also, from their past posts - the person is attending AU's Justice Law and Society.
  6. Could always call monday if you still have no news.
  7. Good to hear nothing came. Given that you're in CA maybe thats a good sign given that if they had mailed something you'd have likely received it. It's not over 'til it's over so hopefully it works out.
  8. No clear indication but from everything that is going on it seems that everything is finalized and they're now strictly dealing with the recruitment weekend etc.
  9. Pretty sure the Mac discount for most universities is nearly, if not totally, identical. It's not like dell etc. where it may depend on your university.
  10. If you made it in by the March 1 deadline, I see no reason not to have applied - have to cover your bases if you really want the degree. Talk about a late deadline for PhD admission for the fall....weird.
  11. Interesting - though this survey is probably far more relevant now as it's from the last academic year. The ADPCJ survey has information on applications, admissions, graduate program size, stipend, percentage receiving jobs after receiving a PhD, etc. Pretty interesting and it appears applications have gone way up since 2005. http://www.adpccj.com/documents/2009_ADPCCJ_Survey_Report.pdf
  12. As far as criminology programs only applied to one - UC Irvine PhD - accepted there.
  13. Avoid Northeast weather! JK Yes, definitely. Thankfully, those that have been advising me in the process have suggested that my particular area of interest has opened me up to a number of disciplines in academia - STS, Poli Sci, Crim, Phil, etc. The jobs in academia really seem to depend on the type of research and the fields you can teach in, so hopefully in 6 or so years when I'm done I'll have good options.
  14. Academia. I don't do criminology in the traditional sense - my undergraduate work is mostly in political/legal theory, as it pertains to the relationship between science and law as far as criminal justice, national security, etc. - which is where the crim. comes in (focus a lot on technologies used at trial) I'm considering going to law school afterwards to get the traditional legal training before entering the job market, but plans may change.
