  1. Not sure how many extra hours of work, as positions aren't posted til the semester begins. That being said, I can accept it without committing (accepting the WS doesn't mean I accept a job). That will be my course of action. Thanks!
  2. Hey all, I am beginning my grad career this fall and have received a Federal Work Study offer ($1k each semester). I certainly would like to accept this offer, but I already have to fulfill TA duties to meet my stipend requirements and am wondering about the workload. Is it a normal thing for a grad student to TA, FWS, and take classes? Does anyone here have any experience/advice regarding this? Hoping that it is manageable and I can accept. Thanks. Best to all.
  3. Hello all, looking for some advice regarding the two options I have for entering a PhD program. What I am wondering about is how much value I should be placing on the communications/recruitment aspect of this process. Basically: if a school seems to want you more (has been in contact since early in app process, offered to match other funding) how much does it really matter? My second option offered me a package after accepting the first cohort, and I have not been put in contact with any POIs there. I can see chalking this up to different timelines that the universities are operating on, or it may be that I am just a better fit in the first program. It is very difficult to tell from the outside!
  4. Out of curiosity, does it ever make sense for grad students to rent in one of Boston's suburbs and commute in? Is that generally too expensive/inconvenient most of the time, or do most posters just prefer to live right in the city? Thanks!
  5. It looks like there have been two acceptances for UConn on the results page, but has anyone here had any acceptances/rejections? I have not heard back personally... hoping to this week in order to make a decision with another school ASAP.
  6. Coffee and Take - thank you for the replies! I read them about 45 minutes before the interview and took them into account. The conversation actually started with "do you have any questions for me?" so it was important to prepare for it. I believe the interview went very well, though there was one curveball which I was not prepared for: I was asked about other schools I applied to and, further, what I would do if I was accepted to all of them! I responded with a one step at a time type of answer (have to take packages into account and so forth) which the interviewer seemed happy enough with... but still, it caught me off guard!
  7. Thank you very much charmquarkz! That is very helpful. The interviewer is a member of the adcom as well as a faculty member that I am interested in working with. I imagine that the interview will consist of a mix of the more general interview topics as well as research topics. I will have to come up with a plan for questions to ask / avenues of thought for the interviewer to expand upon.
  8. Hello, I have a skype interview in less than 24 hours and can use all the help I can get! I am confident in my ability to speak well and present myself properly, but I could use some tips regarding what are typical interview questions/areas of conversation. What I am prepping for: A general “about me” question Questions about statement of purpose/writing sample/undergrad What drew me to apply to the university that is interviewing me What I would like to do with degree Specific works in the field that interest me Is there anything obvious that I am missing?
  9. Much thanks to everyone for the advice/strategy. Looks like it is time for some research!
  10. Hello, I am planning to apply to grad schools with sociology PhD programs for the 2017 academic year. I have just begun to research grad schools (as well as roam these forums) and have a basic question: what resources did you use/recommend when searching for schools? I understand that finding a program/professor who fits my academic inclinations is very important, but I am not at that stage yet. Beyond consulting my former professors, the only resources I have come across so far are: gradschools.com and the various sociology program rankings. Is the combination of those resources the best way to launch a school search? Additionally, I am curious in regards to how one determines where one "should" apply to... In other words, how far up or down the list should I be looking? For reference's sake (though it is surely not enough information), I have a BA in Sociology from a public college with a 3.86 GPA and worked as a research assistant on one faculty project which will result in a publication. I have not yet taken the GRE. I am confident in my abilities to perform at any institution, but do not wish to waste time and energy applying to those which are out of my grasp. Much thanks in advance.
