  1. Sorry if this is already mentioned elsewhere, but I was accepted to a program and haven't heard from my POI. Should I wait for her to contact me or should I go on and contact her? I'm 90% sure I would like to do research with her unless I end up taking an offer at another school (but first I would need to be accepted somewhere else.) Also should I ask to meet her while I'm visiting the campus or would this be more appropriate for if I am definitely accepting the offer?
  2. Congrats, that is awesome news! It probably feels great to have made your decision.
  3. I know I just got here but I can already see that this is a supportive place so I am happy that I have found it. And thank you both!! I am beyond excited. I'm going to visit the Purdue campus in a few weeks.
  4. Just wanted to share my excitement at receiving my first PhD acceptance! Got off the Purdue wait list today.
  5. Thanks for the help guys. I am just a bundle of nerves at the moment.. (I'm sure that isn't uncommon )
  6. You're definitely right. I am trying to be more positive, but I just haven't had the best luck yet so it's difficult! I have just seen some people already receive notifications, and I felt there might be a chance that somebody has called or sent me a letter and I haven't received it. I was also planning to visit a school or two while I was visiting the US in a couple of weeks, so I was hoping for a better idea of what I was doing by then. I would hate to visit my top choices while I'm there and fall in love only to receive rejection afterwards.. I hope I haven't actually hurt my chances by inquiring about my applications, though..
  7. I would assume rejection but hope for the best. Most often departments contact you themselves and allow the grad college to handle rejections which often slows that process down. That being said it is perfectly acceptable to email the departments to ask. Thank you. I really hope that isn't the case.. I've only been accepted to one program so far, it would be nice to have some choice in where I end up. I guess I don't know for sure until I hear anything, though.
  8. So.. is it common for schools to wait to send things out in March? I'm still waiting to hear back from 5 programs. I'm a bit concerned at this point because decisions seem to be slowing. On the results page I have noticed that a couple people have heard back from these schools.. should I assume rejection at this point? I'm just wondering if maybe I should e-mail about the status of my applications or if it's still inappropriate..
  9. I actually applied to a PhD for this program but I guess they knocked me down to an MA first, so I wasn't entirely sure how the MA process went as far as ranking goes. So thank you both for the help! I will have to check out those links as well. I'm incredibly grateful that I have been accepted for this Master's degree, but honestly I do hope it is the worst case scenario and I can enroll in a PhD program at one of my top choices. Although I do believe that this Master's would help me become more competitive and fit for a PhD, considering I applied straight from undergrad.
  10. Hello everyone, I'm currently applying to both MA and PhD programs in history. I have heard back from 2 of my top choices - where I have been wait listed - and accepted into an MA program (although I am wait listed for funding at the moment). The MA program isn't the best fit for me, and it isn't very highly ranked as far as I know, but obviously I felt it was a good enough fit for me to apply. I liked the sound of the MA program itself and found a professor whose work was very interesting to me. My question is: is rank just as important when it comes to receiving only an MA degree? I think it would help me become more competitive for a PhD (I can work on my language skills, get published again, etc.) or is the rank of a program still looked down upon when applying to PhD programs? I still haven't heard back from half of the programs I have applied to, so I may be accepted to my top choice(s) anyway, but I'd like to plan for all possible scenarios. Thanks!
  11. Hey guys... Just wondering if anyone has any advice on how to handle wait listed applications? Would waiting 3-4 weeks after notification to check in look too pushy or impatient? I have been wait listed for my top 2 choices (Purdue History and Indiana HPS), and although I know I still need to wait for those accepted to reject in order for me to be considered, I want them to know I really want to get into these programs... So I feel like not saying anything would make me look uninterested. Also has anybody heard from U of Kentucky?
