  1. No, unfortunately…they make you set up an ID system and it takes about 24 hours. My fault for not setting it up earlier.
  2. Declining Cornell and will decline Stanford tomorrow once the system is set up for me. I cried a little…super hard decision for me. But I'm excited to be at Columbia!
  3. Since visit days are Thursday-Friday, I expect a lot of people will make decisions early this weekend.
  4. Got my rejections from Toronto and NYU today…nice to know I've heard from everywhere now, at least.
  5. Hi! This is a great idea for a thread my main interests are in the history of epistemology with a focus on ancient epistemology--I'm really fascinated by the idea of belief and how it's developed in the ancient world and onwards. So Katja Vogt is a huge draw for me at Columbia, as well as Christia Mercer who told me that Columbia will be bringing in a series of people to give talks on the history of philosophy in the next few years. Hate to be a bearer of bad news for the WL people, but I'm very likely going to choose Columbia (like 95%ish certain). I'll be at the Open House, so I hope to meet some of you there! Best of luck to everyone!
  6. Rejected from the Oxford BPhil…not that upset about getting to stay in America, to be honest
  7. Yes! It's only a pretty short train ride away so I'll be there for at least some of it. If they're willing to pay for flights and stuff for visiting earlier, I would definitely consider it. Still waiting on an official letter for them and everything.
  8. Stanford does have a really great program, and I'd say it's got a lot of advantages over Columbia especially on the ancient side of things. One thing that really attracts me to Columbia is that Katja Vogt's work is very similar to the kind of stuff I want to do; I had the chance to meet her when she was at Princeton last semester and I really got a great impression from her about her work and the department in general. On the history of philosophy side of things, I think Columbia is probably at least as strong, and I've gotten a very good impression from Christia Mercer on that front as well. One of my biggest reasons for preferring Columbia is entirely non-academic, though: my SO lives about an hour from New York and I've really been hoping I could be in the city for the next few years. So with such a clear advantage in location, I feel that the departments are similar enough in strength for me still to favor Columbia. I'm sorry to hear things didn't work out for you this year I didn't realize how crazy a process this whole thing was until recently, and I definitely feel that I got lucky more than anything. Hope things work out for you, whether you keep trying or decide to pursue something else!
  9. Is anyone else a little annoyed at how late some of the visit days are? I'm choosing among Columbia, Cornell, and Stanford and will almost certainly pick Columbia. But since the three programs are pretty comparable in what I want to do (ancient and comparative epistemology--if anyone else thinks there's clearly a best choice among these three for that, though, do let me know!), I want to visit all three and at least have a chance to meet the people in the departments before I make my final decision. But the visit days are all in April (Stanford's is super late at April 10-12) and I feel bad since I'll be formally declining two offers so close to the deadline and I know people are hoping to hear from wait lists anyone else in this situation?
  10. Congrats!!! I'm finishing my undergrad there so I'd be happy to answer any questions about the department/life in Princeton
  11. Yes I am! It would make sense if it were just ancient people: I got a call from Chris Bobonich, not a standardized email or anything.
  12. Same! Congrats!! wasn't expecting a call at 10:30PM but I guess that's the beauty of time zones...
  13. I took the $30,000 from my Cornell offer, which is ~$25,000 plus ~$5,000 in the summer. I expected Columbia would be about the same. I'd be very surprised if it's less than $20,000/year…they know NYC isn't exactly a cheap place to live
  14. I got the same email, but since they guarantee full funding with a stipend I would guess that it's pretty similar to other PhD funding. So around $30,000/year plus discounted housing.
  15. I've declined a spot on their wait list. I hope it helps!
  16. Yes the location is huge for me!! Affordable housing in NYC plus close proximity to SO makes me so happy
  17. Claiming the Columbia acceptance. Still in shock this is like my dream place omg
  18. From the email subject it sounded like an offer of admission, but it was just a link to a survey about the application process.
  19. SAME. I was thinking how crazy it was that they let me know so soon…alas.
  20. Congrats!! If I'm accepted at Columbia (which I hope there's a chance of? maybe?) there's a good chance I'll turn down my Cornell offer. So you definitely have a shot! Really hope you get an offer regardless
  21. Yeah it would be so cool!! My only worry is that she might not stick around for the next five years...
  22. Hi! Yay it's great to hear from other ancient people I'm interested in ancient and comparative epistemology--this year I'm writing my senior thesis on belief and knowledge in the Republic and Theaetetus (so not too far off from your interests!). My writing sample was on Pyrrhonism in Sextus Empiricus and how it got adopted by Michel de Montaigne to figure out whether Christianity and Pyrrhonian skepticism are philosophically compatible (turns out they are, interestingly enough). So far my only acceptance is to Cornell (which is super exciting--hello Gail Fine!!). I would have a pretty hard time deciding between there and Columbia if I get in, so we'll see if that's a decision I have to make!
  23. Thanks!! It was informal but mostly generic--they said they're putting up official letters of admission up on their website at 5PM and this was more of a general congrats.
  24. Hi! I'm one of them! (was trying to avoid looking at this website obsessively but just gave up haha). So excited!!
