I saw that NYU sent out rejections today, but I didn't hear anything. Anyone else in this same boat? (and no I don't think I'm accepted at NYU. Just curious to know why I'm not rejected yet).

Yeah, I'm in the same boat.

  2. I turned down my offer from Columbia today. I heard their waitlist was based on AOI -- so, in case it matters to anyone, I'm interested in mind/cog sci/metaphysics. Best of luck to you all! :)

Wow! Congrats—Princeton and Columbia—that is a huge achievement!

If I may ask, what are your AOI?

Congratulations!  That is definitely something to be proud of.

I was just going to ask about your AOI and then saw someone else had already asked.  I hope you don't mind sharing.

Of course I don't mind sharing! Metaphysics and mind, mostly. Also connections to normativity and epistemology.

It seemed pretty generic, but I was too in shock to notice. I thought they had mistaken me for somebody else. I'm still in shock, and I refuse to believe it!!! Please, nobody pinch me. Leave me be in peace.

I triple-checked the email and worried if it had been meant for someone else....

  5. I got into Princeton as well! (I'm about to post it on the results list.)

    Thanks.  Much appreciated.

So, my chances of rejecting the Columbia offer have gone up quite a lot.

I feel so blessed. I cried on the fire escape of my philosophy building. My getting into Princeton was gravely important to me and my partner.

Could any of the Columbia people give an indication of whether they plan to accept or decline?  I know we all just heard several hours ago, but I'm on the wait list, and it would be really helpful just to know if you're even considering turning it down.

There's roughly a 50/50 chance I'll turn it down. I'll post here if I do.

That's disappointing, was just getting a sliver of hope after not receiving a rejection. Maybe this just reveals my ignorance of the system, but why do international students cost more than out of state Americans to fund?

I'd guess that it's because there's less state (or perhaps even federal) funding available for international students, in which case the department has to pay more on its own.

He actually wrote one of my letters of rec! I know he rubs people the wrong way a lot, but having gotten to know him I'm come to the conclusion that he's like that gruff but deep-down compassionate grandpa type. As a (white) female, I actually felt very good about being in his class. A lot of the female grad students go to him if they're having climate/microaggression problems with others in the department, actually. Have you interacted with him in person much, or mostly e-mail/phone? I could see his true nature not really coming through if it was mainly the latter two. And, for the record, I disagree with him on just about everything, so I don't think that's why I like him! Hah.

That's good to hear! I've seen him give a couple talks, and I participated in a semester-long reading group with him. But, I never met with him one-on-one, which is perhaps more indicative of his real values. Thank you for sharing! :)

True!! And I happen to love him. I honestly had forgotten he was there until just now. Hahah this is definitely a point in favor of Austin. Especially since van Inwagen (who I love as well) is semi-retired at this point.

Do you know Peter van Inwagen? I've interacted with him a lot and find his personality and behavior usually bothersome and sometimes utterly deplorable. Specifically, he's a constant source of condescension and microaggressions (and I'm a white male!). I'd be pleased if your experience was different.

  10. Hiya friends with whom I've not yet spoken,

I got a call from Alex Byrne (my main POI) about 45 minutes ago. :) I'm the person who said I'd been rejected from Brown and Harvard, but I hadn't reported those to tgc. I was feeling super down about an hour ago, and that all changed really fast. I'm feeling very fortunate right now.

    Best,

    Reg.
