Okay well now I'm confused. There's been at least ten people on here that said they declined their acceptance to Western? Did they admit more then 37 people first round?

Yeah I'm also confused. I declined at Western, and I know of at least 3 other people that I met at the U of T Open House that got into Western but chose U of T. I feel like she may be exaggerating the numbers a little bit... :)

After viewing websites for both schools, Western has around 9 classes per semester, while UofT has 5. I also confirmed with my friend at UofT and she said she takes 5 courses per semester. ( her semester from sep to  dec) I am not sure if what I'm seeing for western is right, but it seems as though they take 9:
    http://www.uwo.ca/fhs/csd/programs/slp/year1.html

Do any of you guys have any idea about this? 9 seems to be a crazy load of courses for one semester !

I looked at this a little while ago, and what I noticed is that they have a few half-semester courses. So instead of running from Sept-Dec, some of them run for Sept-Oct.

For example, Clinical Phonetics and Clinical Transcription of Speech (9611a) runs from September 10 until October 15 (date of final exam). Basically, you'd take 9 different types of courses but some would end halfway through to be replaced by a new course that starts in the middle of October. Also, the Clinical Applications courses look similar to labs and are only worth 0.25 credit.

It looks like these courses run the whole semester:

    Anatomy & Physiology
    Fluency Disorders
    Language Acquisition
    Speech Science
    (Clinical Applications - labs?)

And these courses run for half the semester:

    Clinical Phonetics and Clinical Transcription
    Introduction to Professional Practice

This means you have 5 'full-semester' courses along with 3 different labs. Hope that helps!

I actually spoke to a current Western SLP student and she confirmed that it is very very difficult (in first year at least) to get a placement in the GTA because U of T holds most of those placement locations for their students. That was a huge deciding factor for me because I would not want to pay for rent in London only to have to pay to commute (or potentially even rent) to another place on top of thatwhen I live in the GTA. I plan on commuting to U of T which will save a lot of money for me so I don't think I could fathom paying so much for Western when there's a much more convenient and cost-effective option.

However, a big positive for Western and their placements is that they have the on site clinic which makes your first placement very convenient in that you don't have to even go off-campus. I think that would make it a little easier to balance placements and classes being together.

Oh hey, another commuter! That's exactly my reasoning for U of T, it's going to save a ton of money as opposed to rent in London. If there was a huge difference in how good the programs are, that would be a different story. But they are both great schools with great programs. It's nice to see I'm not the only one! How long would your commute be?

Thank you both for sharing! It helps to hear others' perspectives and reasoning. It's also nice to hear that a lot seems to surround personal reasons, rather than school/curriculum - shows that either school would be a good choice!

I know what you mean, I started worrying that it was silly to choose U of T just because it's closer, but the more I think about I know it's valid. There's no point racking up for debt when Western wouldn't really have any advantage over Toronto. They both look like amazing schools, so I don't think there's a 'wrong' choice. They are both fantastic. Western I definitely think would have the student life right there for you and it would be easy to get involved. But I think Toronto has just as much culture, you just need to look harder to find it :)

The one thing about U of T is that I really do like the structure of the program - completing an academic unit on one general area, immediately followed by a placement in that area. I know I learn really well this way, applying things fresh from learning about them. I think this will really help me. The Western program seems a little less clear cut, but that may work better for others!

Hey guys! I am 99% sure that I will be attending Western instead of the other schools (U of T being one of them) for a few reasons. I am moving from Winnipeg, which is a pretty affordable city to live in and so for my fiancé and I, London seems more similar in terms of cost of living than Toronto. I really like how the class size at Western is 37 rather than 50 at Toronto. Also, getting a call from a faculty member at Western after acceptances went out was really nice and gave me chance to connect with the program on more of a personal level. Friends of mine who are out of grad school just keep telling me to create a simple life for myself during my program so that I am not distracted and can focus easier on school. Coming from Winnipeg, Toronto is a big and busy city! There are coupe of other reasons why I prefer Western like the fact that my fiancé's mother's boyfriend has all of his family in the area and so they will come visit more and also the teaching clinic at Western is a huge plus!

A lot of this is just personal preference and I think that all of the other schools in Canada are great! You just have to decide what is most important to you I suppose :) Good luck!!

Thanks for sharing! It seems like a lot of people are choosing based on personal reasons, which I think are totally valid. For me, I live only a 45 min GO train ride away from the downtown Toronto campus. So U of T gives me the option to commute for even just the first year or so if I want, and that way I can live at home and save money. London seemed like a cool adventure for me but I think practicality is pretty important. I went to U of T for my undergrad and I loved it there, I'm excited about the idea of going back.

I also want to point out that apparently a U of T professor called for me last night - I was at work so I didn't get it, but he left his number and I will call him tonight probably. That made me feel a LOT better about the school because I was so impressed that Professor Orange called from Western, the faculty seems so nice there. I'm hoping to find just as many nice people at Toronto! And while 50 students seems like a lot, it will still be much smaller than the undergrad classes I was used to :)

So I have officially RSVP'd to the U of T's open house on Friday - hope to meet some of you there! :)

I have also booked a tour with Janet at Western. I'm hoping that after these tours, I'll be able to make a decision...

For those of you who have chosen to attend Western or U of T, do you mind sharing your reasoning? Thanks!

I will be there on Friday too! I would also be very interested in why people are choosing one of these over the other. I'm pretty sure I'm leaning toward U of T but it would be nice to know what other people are thinking to help them decide.

Well, now I feel like an idiot for paying the deposit. :/ But to be fair, they gave me absolutely no indication that they would be willing to change the deadline when I asked.

I still don't know if McGill is my first choice or second behind Toronto. And I'm trying really hard not to think about it until after I finish writing my GD honours thesis. But it is super hard not to.

Not gonna lie, I'm a little excited that you are likely to go to McGill, even though I don't know you at all. More potential classmates! If I go there too then I hope we become good pals. :)

I guess we really shouldn't be surprised that they changed the deadline. Must have been a nice chunk of cash they got from that strategy :P

*Ahem* help me get off the McGill waitlist... :D Although I would love Toronto too. It's a weird position not knowing whether or not I'll be going to school at all in September, so at this point I really don't care as long as SOMEONE accepts me!

Update: it has now switched to requesting accepting your position on the waitlist! Keeping my fingers crossed

Yep, I got that too! It gave me a heart attack at first because all I read was 'we are unable to admit you' and I thought that meant they changed their mind and rejected me outright :P

Does everyone here have a honours degree? I am applying without honours (but still same amount of courses as a honours, i did two years in a previous major) because the websites say you dont need one. I applied to teachers college as a backup and got rejected, when I asked them about it they said you dont NEED honours but  those who have it are given preference and that if you dont have one they downgrade you average 25%.

Wow I had no idea they did that. I did my undergrad at U of T and honours was the only option in order to graduate. I didn't know it was really an advantage.

I was thinking the same thing, lol. (Also, welcome! Congratulations on emerging from lurkdom. The communal freaking-out is pretty cathartic, it's true.)

Thank you! It's good to not freak out alone. This is my first time applying so I really don't know what to expect. I also don't have high hopes for McGill, though. I wonder if they are less likely to accept Ontario students because we have our own schools... but I hope that's not the case.

  11. Hi all!

I've been lurking this for far too long so I figured it was time to make an account since these are now tense times and it is SO comforting to read everyone else freaking out :)

I just noticed there was another McGill acceptance posted, so it looks like maybe they are calling again. I really wasn't expecting anything until Friday at the earliest!
