Anyone know what position they are at UofT on the list? Does UofT give that info out? The uncertainty of life is killing me..

I recieved the following email from U of T's awards office:

"While SGS policy is to not provide students with exact rankings, I can provide you with your approximate location on the alternate list, and compare that to last year’s odds of receiving the award.

You are approximately in the middle of the “alternate” list. Currently, we have extended offers to approximately a third of the students on the “alternate” list. Last year, students in your approximate rank did receive CGS M offers at some point in the competition. Although each year is different, and we cannot make any guarantees regarding this year."

The waiting game continues. Fingers cross that I will move up on the alternate list. I do know that one of my peers already moved up and had an offer, but declined as they opted to go to another university.

What school is this for, Saiyph?

My fingers are crossed for you too :)

I would just ask - time is of the essence right now! Practically guaranteed they get asked it all the time anyways :)

I emailed the awards office and my department, but no response yet ... grr!

Hello all. I am currently in Renison's full time BSW program. I'm planning to apply to MSW programs this coming year, feel free to tell me to get lost from this forum, but I thought maybe I could benefit from the wisdom you all have gained this year.

A few questions...First, has anyone heard anything about/applied to Western's MSW program? I have never heard anyone talk about it so I'm assuming it isn't great?

Second, is it true that your research methods mark is really important? I only got 72% in that course, back in the second year of my undergrad. Is this grade important for people with their BSW degree who are applying to advanced standing programs? My marks have been great since third year, and all my grades are above 90 so far this year in my BSW. I'm kind of scared seeing people's posts about research methods because I never thought a second year course could have such an impact on my future.

PS if anyone has any Renison BSW questions I'm happy to answer.

    Hey Purple-Elephant!

While it is true that research methods is important, most schools assess your application holistically. So if you didn't do so well in research methods (neither did I and I got into the MSW - I had a B- in research methods and a D+ in second year stats) you can still demonstrate research aptitude in other ways (eg. by volunteering to work for professors as an RA over the summer and attending relevant conferences). You can also apply for undergrad research fellowships - I think that getting one of these would really set your application apart because they allow you to conduct research on a full-time basis AND get paid to do it. I don't know about Renison, but at my school there are two major ones: USSRF and NSERC. You also might get a publication or two by doing these things and you'll get to engage with the research process in a really immersive way. You might even find out that you love it (I hated the research methods class but discovered that I love research - go figure!).

So don't lose hope! You're in a really good position - you've identified an area of weakness in your application and you still have time to compensate for it. Good luck and hope this was helpful in some way!

Have you made the group? Would love to be a part of this too! Great idea!!

Apparently you need to add at least one Facebook friend to the group in order to create a new group .... so someone add me on Facebook so we can get the ball rolling!!! I'm Nat Bowman on there. My profile picture is me with a little white dog. Just shoot me a message letting me know who you are :D

Not that I'm aware of, but it would be awesome if someone started one and shared the link! I would love to join a Facebook group!

I just tried to create one but apparently you need to add at least one other group member before you can create a group! So if someone attending U of T in sept. for the 2 year program wants to give me their email I can create it! Can't wait to meet you all!!

Congrats to everyone who got in! Must be such an amazing feeling.

I only applied to UofT's 2 year MSW program (not in yet). I only want to do clinical social work, and I know UofT and UBC offer the 2 year programs for it. Anyone know of any other universities that have this program without requiring a BSW?

Also, I think I might not get in to UofT this year because I have about 3 years of relevant experience, and I feel as though everyone else had a lot more. Anyone have any pointers on paid work in social services I can do in my gap year (with a B.A.) to gain experience? Thanks!

    Hi rabschaud,

3 years of relevant experience is nothing to sneeze at! Don't count yourself out yet. I had no real experience and I got in ... so keep your head up!

If you do end up doing a gap year maybe you could seek out employment as an RA? Depending on what your background is, that is. I've heard that U of T places high value on research experience (which I assume is the main reason I was admitted) so contributing to clinical research could work in your favour.

Good luck and I will cross my fingers for you!

Hey! I love the program so much. I came from a psychology background and made the switch to SW when I realized there was no chance I was getting in to school in Canada for psych. I am SO happy I made the switch.

Finding placements is different for everyone. UofT is unique in that they find placements for you, you don't go out in to the field and find them on your own. They have an online system with all the options and you choose your top 7...then the system automatically assigns you one of the top seven (a small number of people don't get one of their top seven as it's based on an algorithm, and it can be a bit stressful for them, but it all works out as some placements sign up after students have been assigned. So some people who didn't originally get one end up getting an even better one!).

You decide what specialization you want at the start of your second semester. You get whatever specialization you want. It is not based on grades. They only ask that u choose early so they know how many courses/spots to create for each class.

That is extremely helpful, thank you so much! It sounds like we come from a similar background. Where did you complete your undergrad? I love that U of T matches students with placements ... I have friends in related programs who have really struggled to find appropriate placements, so it is reassuring to hear that U of T takes care of that. It sounds like a great program. What is the housing situation like around the school? I know that the cost of living is ridiculously high in Toronto ... that is really the only thing that is holding me back from accepting the offer right this minute. And on a related note, how is the workload and are there summer breaks? Is it possible to work part time while also completing the MSW?

    THANK YOU!

    Hey All,

Congrats to those of you who have gotten in, and good luck to those of you waiting! I was in your position a year ago and am now almost done my first year of UofT's 2-year MSW program. Just as an FYI, i got my acceptance on April 1st of last year. Let me know if anyone has questiosn about the program itself or admission information

    Good luck!!

Hi! How is the program? Did you have any trouble finding a placement? And how does the specialization selection work in second year (eg. is it based off of grades? Do most people get their first choice of specialization?)? I have so many questions that I don't know where to start haha!

    Congratulations!!!!!
Out of curiosity, did your ROSI update after Ach29's or at the same time? I'm trying to figure out whether or not they have sent all the acceptances out at the same time today

It happened after! First time I checked (when I saw Ach29's post) my ROSI still said "no registration history". So keep refreshing!

  12. Hi everyone :) this is my first time posting but I have been reading these boards for a few weeks! I applied to U of T and York's 2yr MSW programs. I am hoping for U of T but (like many people) I'm still waiting to hear back. Currently finishing up a BA in psych at Queen's. I have lots of research experience but not much experience directly related to social work practice. I am trying not to lose hope but it is hard. Anyway, good luck to all of you! Figured I would join the conversation :)
