  1. From what I have heard they send an email notification. However, I don't know for sure.

Okay, so now that the humanities letters have gone out, do the intended recipients also get emails, or just a letter?

  2. Tell me about it! What's really getting me is that "FROM April 2nd..." Because that implies that it could be later than that. Argh!

Well now the updated page say "FROM April 3rd." I suspect we wont know for another week if they keep pushing the date on the website back.

  3. I was also accepted to Oxford's MSc in CSP and LSE's MSc in Social Policy and Planning. I don't know much about Heinz, but I am deciding between those 2 schools and UPenn's Social Policy Program. For me it will come down to funding (of course), strength on national and international reputation, job placement, and curriculum. By far, in terms of international social policy reputation - Oxford and LSE are strongest. LSE's program has a long history and strong curriculum. Of course, Oxford is...Oxford and has instant name recognition much like a Harvard Kennedy School.

At the end of the day, for me its about being prepared with the strongest skill set and leaving the program with a strong footing to be able to secure the job I want. So in the end, if Oxford comes through with funding, I will go there.

  4. bddurham, you are definitely being considered. Technically, everyone who was offered a place by a department is in the running.

Looks like about 30 per division will be offered; Math/Physical Sciences/Life Sciences is finished with their Clarendon offers, and they gave out 30.

lsh37421, fingers crossed for both of us...we should know in a week or so!

Thanks Curls215! I will def say an extra prayer for all of us. I know that the update page says that 4 social science Clarendons were given out in the first review cycle so it looks like the bulk of the awards will be announced by the April 2nd date. The wait is killing me! lol

  5. Anyone here get accepted into University of Michigan? I got accepted a few weeks ago...have yet to receive my acceptance package. But online they have updated my financial aid status...I noticed that I don't have anything except loans and work study. Did anyone get scholarships? I know they have scholarships you can apply for in Sept but that is not a guarantee that I'll get it. I was hoping they would just offer me something like WUSTL.

I got into Michigan and got all scholarships.I was notified in late Feb and fin aid. I applied for scholarships when I submitted my app. They prob are still considerig ppl for scholarships. All the best.

  7. Congrats to everyone on your acceptances!!!! Its such an exciting time. :)

I have decided on Columbia, but will be deferring while I do a one yr masters @ Harvard. So excited!!! All the best to everyone who is still waiting.

  8. Should I take the fact that I have not received an email or status change as a rejection???

It seems like everyone else has received the decision, am I the only that has not???

Congrats to all those that have been accepted biggrin.gif

Im no expert, but I dont think you should take it as a rejection especially if your online application doesnt have an admissions deicsion link. They may just still be posting them. All the best w/grad school admissions. :)

  9. Congrats on the recent acceptances!!! I'm glad the Columbia wait is over for most of you!! I'll be keeping my fingers crossed for a lil while longer as I continue to wait for a decision, and I totally know where you're coming from, Morad123. All of the components of my application were submitted by the Jan. 15th deadline, but it wasn't until Feb. that it was noted as complete =/

I wouldnt worry. I am sure that they are still pumping out decisions. I applied super early to every program (exceot HGSE), so my Columbia application was complete in October. From what I have heard from Columbia, they will still be sending out deicions in the weeks to come. In fact, they said that I would have to wait unto end of March or start of April before I get any info on fin aid.

  10. Yes, Michigan has a very strong macro program (community organizing, management, and social policy). Its MSW students have the option to take courses in other top-ranked departments across campus (Public Policy, Public Health, Business, Education, Urban Planning, Sociology, Psychology, etc..). U-M Students also have the option to do national and international field placements. The International Institute is a wonderful resource here. They are also more generous with financial aid for out-of-state students. As Terri said, the Columbia debt isn't worth it since social work in general is not a high-paying field. IMO, I would only recommend Columbia if you are seeking a (corporate) consulting career.

I just went online to check out my fin aid package from U-Michigan. I have to say that compared to the other schools that I got into (Chicago, New School, and Brown - No word on $ from Columbia and Penn) their package is AMAZING. Infact, the grants and scholarships that they offered will cover my tution and housing. We shall see from the other schools that i have not heard from yet.

  11. I applied to the Ed.M at HGSE in risk and prevention as well. I'm almost positive the emails come out next Friday! Good luck! The wait is terrible =(

Hi! Maybe we will end up in the same cohort! *says a quick prayer*

And Yes the wait is SOOOOO hard! Where did you hear about next week? I thought the firm date was on March 26th?

  12. Hi Morad123:

I also applied to NYU, Hunter and Fordham. Have you heard anything from those three schools??? I am so anxious because I haven't heard anything from them other than confirmation of receiving my application.

I heard from NYU about a week or so ago. But I applied super early and still have not heard about any financial aid. I am pretty sure that they are still pumping out decisions.

I hope you hear soon. :) All the best!

  13. Hi everyone,

This is my first post, and after reading all your replies for the past 2 weeks I have finally decided to join!

I am waiting up my fall 2010 MSW acceptances/rejections.

I have applied to Columbia, NYU, Hunter, Fordham, and StonyBrook.

Has anyone heard from Columbia yet? Last time I spoke to admissions they said they were going to notify everyone by March 1st. I am stressing!

if anyone has heard from any schools let me know .

    Good lucK!

I got an email from them yesterday saying that they would start sending out decisions later this week.

  14. Did you email to ask the status of your application or did they just send you an email? I don't understand why they are taking so long this year, it seems like every other year they have let people know in mid-February :(

I didnt ask them. I just got the email. The subject said 'Decisions Update' (SO misleading!) And YES it is taking forever. I dont know whats going on. But anywho, its reads:

Thank you for completing your application to Columbia University's School of Social Work.

We are currently in the process of reviewing applications and will be notifying applicants of their decision via email starting later this week. Unfortunately, we will not be able to notify you of your decision over the phone. Once you get an email, you can log in to your application to view your decision at:

    Please be sure to add
to your address book and update your profile with any email address changes.

If you have any questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to contact the Office of Admissions at
    or 212-851-2400.

    Sincerely,

    The Office of Admissions

  15. I haven't received any funding info yet so I'm not sure. I've narrowed it down to Columbia, Pitt, NYU or Oxford's masters in Evidence-Based Social Intervention (if I get in). I'd say Columbia is my top choice but they're supposedly terrible with financial aid and I refuse to go $120,000 in debt for a social work degree. More than likely, Pitt will be the most affordable option and I've only heard great things about their program.

As for advice, I think your experience will definitely show them that you're dedicated to the field. While taking more classes won't boost your undergrad GPA, it will give them a second transcript with presumably much higher grades. I think annie a has some good advice too. If this round of applications doesn't pan out, you can take classes and prove yourself to professors who can then write you solid letters of recommendation. Also, from what I've read, personal statements are huge for MSW programs. I've posted mine on gradcafe and other forums and people have been really, really helpful at editing them. You can always try to hide a low GPA with work experience (which you already have), great letters of recommendation (both academic and professional) and a strong personal statement. Add some higher grades from a community/local college and you should be pretty competitive!

Congrats on the acceptances!! I am still waiting for Columbia. Why is it taking so long?

  16. Hi everyone! I am new to the forum. I just got my letter in the mail this week from NYU. I havent heard anything from them about money yet. Still waiting on Columbia MSW and HGSE. So far, I have heard from NYU, Penn, Michigan, and Chicago. Ive narrowed it down to Columbia, Penn or HGSE.

Congrats to everyone who has gotten acceptances! :)
