I'm sad that I didn't get it this year but its only my first time applying. Now that I understand the process better I'm sure i'll have a better chance next time. @hobakie @mrs12When you did not get it with your first try and went to apply the next time, were there some essay responses that you kept the same while writing all new answers to others? I feel like a only a couple of my essays might not have been strongly written or did not get my point across like I thought it would but the other responses seemed good to me (of course I'm biased though lol). Since we don't get feedback it's hard to say what it was that made the reviewers say no.

Rejected from Japanese

They are but I'm too scared to check!!!!

@Estee3 About 3 ish weeks but I've never been good or even average at writing so I should have spent more time but I only learned about the program mid-October.

Two more days!!!

No it won't be. I'm thinking we hear back on the 18th though. The application page said maintenance would be on the 17th from 9 to 10 in the evening which I think means that they are going to re-upload it with information for the semifinalists and alter their applications so they can start submitting paperwork. Whether you end up being a finalist or not they start asking for stuff to get the paperwork moving so that if you end up being an alternate and a spot doesn't open up until the May or even June you and CLS won't be scrambling to get visas, health forms, etc. together in time. I heard about some people who found out they'd been moved from alternate to finalist two weeks before the orientation. Speaking of the orientation, what goes on there. I assume they give you the information, schedules and plane tickets for each of the language sites. Is it also ice breakers to get to know your classmates? Do you get to meet and mingle with the people in other languages?

If someone gets rejected are they allowed to ask what it was that resulted in the decision? Would they answer? I'm thinking no since there's a lot of applications but then they all got read individually and I should think they made some notes on what they thought about each applicant.

I wish we could all line up and use the sorting hat from Harry Potter. CLS can feed the hat the rubric then they just plop it on our heads and we see what he says.
-
Ahhh so that deadline is for the people who review the applications? @hobakie Thanks! If I get the program I want things to go well for everyone involved, not just for me. If my host family and classmates are comfortable and happy then we all get the most out of the experience.

@okazu @emari5 Thank you! That's great how CLS makes sure you learn as much of the language as possible. Did they give you a sort of roommate questionnaire before pairing you with a family to see if you were allergic to any animals or if they would only be willing to take in a specific gender (perhaps for religious or cultural reasons) or someone that sleeps early?
-
@hobakie Were you allowed to go out on your own? Say you finished classes for the day and did your homework quickly by 5pm does CLS let you do whatever you want with the rest of the day? Or are you required to stay in the dorm/home stay/housing they give you when not attending CLS sanctioned events and classes? @emari5 I'd really like to know more programs! I've been having so much trouble finding them and every variation of "study abroad" I type into google takes me to the same results. Would you mind if I messaged you?
-
@okazu Wow that puts a whole new perspective on things. I'm getting too nervous! Is this the first time applying to a study abroad program for anyone? Or have they been accepted into other things like Gilman or Fulbright before? It's my first time applying to study abroad.
-
True. Does anyone know who or what kind of people the application reviewers are? > Will the specific languages application be reviewed only by people that have something to do with that language and culture? (Have taught the language, have lived where is is spoken) > Do they have a lot of experience go abroad? Just curious because sometimes when I'm asked to write a paper about something concerning my major I have to write it differently depending on who will be reading it. Like I can use more engineering lingo with someone in my field but would have to reword it for someone who might not have studied it beyond what they teach in college level physics 1 and 2.
-
I heard some other scholarship groups put together spreadsheets with screen names, language applied, date they heard back, year in college, major and other related info. It helps with stats, timelines, and helps to give others an idea of where they stand and whats kind of going on. What do you guys think? Would you like to have one for CLS 2017? Or is the forum enough?

@emari5 Is this your first time applying?
-
It's only been a week since I submitted the application and the program is on my mind 24/7. What is everyone else doing to put this out of their minds??
-
Ok thank you! One of them has been submitted so I'll go see the other professor tomorrow. But both of my LORs are not from language teachers. My school doesn''t offer the language I hope that doesn't hurt me too much.
-
How do I know my recommendations have gotten in? They have a status tracker within the application but the status hasn't changed and I don't want to keep pestering my professors. Also who you all get your recommendations from? Language teachers only? Or professors in other fields besides your language? One of each?
-
What is your major?

I just turned in my application! I'm so nervous! This is my first time applying to something like this and I'm scared of how mu answers will be received by the committee.
