  1. Hi everyone, I know this is a little early to start this thread but I just wanted some advice on factors to consider when deciding on programs (which will also help me ask better questions on the rest of my interviews)! I guess my main question is what factors are the most important when deciding which school to go to! And in general, how important is ranking/prestige? For example, should you always attend the top program you get into, or does it not matter if you are deciding between two programs that are both known to be very good! Thanks so much in advance :)

I wouldn't flat out say "top choice."  Just thank them for the invite, but you unfortunately must decline the interview.  They'll read between the lines, but it's less awkward than telling them about your acceptance to your "top choice."

    Perfect thanks so much!

  3. So I was recently just accepted to one of my top choice programs (Yay!) and I am planning on cancelling two of my other interviews just because I applied to too many schools and it just gets to tiring! I was just wondering what the most polite way to cancel interviews is (none of them have bought any travel tickets for me yet). Should I just email the program coordinator saying I got into my top choice school and I really appreciate you giving me the opportunity to interview but I really don't want to waste anyones time?

Recently received my interview schedule for Johns Hopkins MMI/BMB...and I was surprised that the faculty I'm meeting with don't entirely match my research interests. In my app I said I was interested in microbiology and they paired me with two immunology people and two random cell bio people. Is this a bad sign? Between the two programs I gave them nearly 10 people I was interested working with and they matched me with 2. Does this mean that most of the people on my list didn't want to meet with me, or that they just weren't available? I've been on two interviews so far and they did a really good job of finding people whose research interested matched my own. Has anyone else experienced this?

Don't be worried about this! I was worried that one of my top choices didn't pair me with faculty I wanted to work with but then I interviewed and got accepted regardless!

Actually, at most schools I interviewed at, rarely any of my interviewers were aware of my credentials or familiar with my other application materials. The interview is when you show the adcom that they were right about you by inviting you. So, I think the impression you make during it will go farther than your credentials, given that they were already good enough to get you there.

I'm a little nervous about this because at my last interview I spoke to three faculty members and they were all out of my field of interest. I just feel like I would have had a better chance at getting in if they had been in my field and I wanted to rotate in their lab! Any ideas on this?

  6. If you're going on an interview for one of your first choice schools, does anyone recommend making it clear in the interview that its your top choice? I just had my first interview weekend at one of my favorites (that has below a 50% post interview acceptance rate) and I was worried that I didn't sell myself enough during the interview that the school was my favorite! If they ask me why I like the program, should I say it is my top choice because....

I received an invitation on Friday for the home program I applied to. However, as you said, admissions are home program-based and this is clarified in the email as well. Stanford Biosciences has one single umbrella program interview weekend (March 2-4), but decisions for each respective home program have not all necessarily been finalized yet.

    Which home program were you?

Didn't get a Harvard email today, but I just got a call from UC San Diego, so I'd call it a good day :)

Been thinking a lot recently about my undergrad application process; I don't know about you guys, but things ended up very far from what I expected at the outset and things have been more than okay. Just a thought to keep in mind.

    When is their interview weekend?

  9. How exactly does the interview notification process work? Like do all schools send out their interview invites in one day, or is it like spread over multiple days, or does it depend on the school? For example, if some people got an interview from Vandy yesterday, does that mean I'm not going to get one?

I applied to 12 and have 6 interviews (would have 7 if school #7 was willing to give me an alternate date but they could not), and I have to say that money aside, I don't regret it at all but I think I could have eliminated 2 of them before I applied. I have a broad range of interests and five of my schools were ivies- so REALISTICALLY I thought I had a shot at 7 of the 12 although I was fairly competitive for all of them (3.8 GPA, 2 publications, started doing research in high school), and one of my invites was at one of the schools I thought wouldn't be interested in me.

I was interested in ALL of the programs- I asked myself "If this is the only school I get into, will I be happy there science/life wise?" and didn't apply if the answer was "no." I only applied in the northeast and only to schools within an hour and a half of a major city, and made sure I could find 5+ POIs I liked at each. That said, I applied broadly ranking and size wise to give myself options, but this was not the first priority in choosing schools.

I  emailed probably around 75 POIs last spring/summer/fall to get responses from 2-3 from each school to get a feel for the environment and chat about their research and I DID NOT email a single person I was not interested in working with. This was the most time consuming part of the application process so I suggest you START NOW- if you are lucky you will find a couple people on adcoms who will remember you!

Yes, I would have taken the 7th interview if I could have. Yes, I am exhausted, I have had one weekend WITHOUT an interview since the semester started and won't be done till after next week. But I have learned things on these interviews about myself, my future peers, the field I am going into, and even was able to rule a school out completely during the interview.
Also, I feel great in business casual and suits now instead of like a kid playing dress-up so that's a plus.

I have heard mixed reviews about emailing POIs, what do people think?
