  1. I have a masters in higher education and now I'm looking into doctoral programs. I've read over and over again about how important it is to choose a program/university based on similar research interests. But I have an extremely specific interest related to military/veteran dependents in higher education and, so far, I haven't been able to find anyone with my specific interests. I've gone on the websites of more universities than I can remember and found a few people with not-quite-adjacent interests, but no one with my specific interest as it just isn't an area that gets researched. So how do I choose a program/advisor? Do I choose someone that has any kind of military/veteran/higher ed research interest? "Military" and "veteran" are such a broad areas and I'm not sure if that matters. How close does an advisor's interest have to be to mine? Or maybe I find someone with a research style? Or are there higher ed doctoral programs that more individualized?
  2. Career options are pretty much the same either way. Both masters are in higher education, but School #1 is more policy/administration focused and School #2 concentrates on more on student affairs (my preference). Plus, School #2 has classes and professors that appeal to me more. However, taking on a significant amount of debt would be difficult. My husband is active duty military and though I could possibly get a great job and pay off the debt quickly, there is also the very real possibility of having to move (probably several times) that makes having a career difficult, especially with some of the places we could end up going. There's just no way to know where we'll be living or how long we'll be anywhere. It's easier to plan on only having his income. He makes enough we could make it work, but not without quite a bit of sacrifice.
  3. I'm in a pickle. I've narrowed it down to two schools and I'm not sure how to choose, so I'm putting it here. School #1 - It has program I would be okay with, but that's it...just okay. Location is not the most convenient either. However, it is a shorter program and it would be completely free. School #2 - This option has a much better program that I would definitely prefer and the location is more convenient. However, it would take me twice as long to finish my masters at this school and it comes with a significant out-of-pocket cost. Which would you choose? Better program or completely free?
  4. I want to work in a university, specifically in education abroad and veterans services. Which programs should I be looking into? Higher education, student affairs, international education, or something else? Does it really matter which one I do? As for letters of recommendations, I can get ones from former professors, but I have a question about using a previous supervisor. My husband is in the military, we lived in Germany for three years and, while there, I held several volunteer positions. These positions were not at all related to education, but they are definitely related to helping our military and living abroad. Since those are the two areas I'm most interested in for a future career and I plan on writing about it in my Statement of Purpose, would asking my supervisor (a U.S. Army colonel) for a recommendation be a good or bad idea? He thinks very highly of me, recommended me for and gave me several volunteer awards, and already offered to write a fantastic recommendation if I need it...but again, he knows nothing of my academic abilities or the education field. Thoughts?
