  1. I contacted the grad director to let them know that I was still interested in the program and would definitely accept an offer. He responded and let me know that I'm on their short list for alternates and are just waiting to hear from the people they've already made offers to. I would guess it would be close to the 15th before I hear definitive from them. So, if you aren't going to Penn State for History, let them know and I'll buy you a cookie.
  2. If any of you have offers you don't intend to accept, please let them know. I'm shortlisted in the top 15% and they are waiting to hear from people who've been sitting on offers for weeks. Help me out here. 8)
  3. If you're considering Columbia's MA in American Studies, I would say don't bother. I'm graduating from the program in May and if I had it to do over again, I probably wouldn't. The university treats Liberal Studies students, which the MA is offered under, as second-class citizens. Many professors won't let you into their graduate level classes because you aren't a PhD. student. The department has gotten a little more helpful with some recent personnel changes, but it's still a crapshoot. You have no adviser, just a bureaucrat behind a desk, and are pretty much left to your own devices. Developing a personal relationship with a professor or two will make the experience more enjoyable.
  4. I think I might be waitlisted for Penn State, as I haven't heard anything from them and the grad assistant told me over a week ago that they weren't done with the process, but that she had no info on standings. I don't have any other offers from schools. Anyone think it might be a good/bad idea to just call and politely let them know that I would definitely accept an offer? This waiting is interminable.
  5. Hi, all. I'm new here and wondering if anyone has heard from Penn State yet? The only info I can get from people at the department is that the first offers have gone out and that they aren't done with the process. Either no one knows or no one will tell me about my application specifically. Since I haven't heard yet, I'm hoping that means I'm still in the running for a slot and not that they're just waiting until the end to send out rejection letters.
