I also wanted to add that I've been working on a spreadsheet of where mod/con curators or directors went for school. This helped me as I have been deciding where to apply/where to attend. I looked mostly at museums I'm interested in working.

Fascinating that for modern/contemporary at least, less that 20% have doctoral degrees.

In order of most frequent: NYU, Courtauld, Columbia, Bard, Hunter, and Williams. Another consideration is how many students these programs have per year...

I'm curious to see this spreadsheet, though gradcafe says:

The page you are trying to access is not available for your account.

Congrats to the recent UCLA admits! May I ask if either of you were informed as to when they'd be sending out remaining notifications (positive or negative)? I'm sitting on an offer and while I'm certainly expecting a rejection, I just want to have all my options on the table before pulling the trigger.

    Thanks!!

I hope you didn't receive the letter I received this morning.

@baddie I took an extension to answer; I'll have a decision early next week. I also heard the UofT only takes one international student a year.

Thanks for sharing this. I wish I knew that they want only one international student before applying.

By the way, you got into University of Rochester as well? Congratulations!! That's a wonderful program!

@baddie Do you know how many have been admitted? As far as I remember from the results page only two people have been accepted... My POI told me that they accept 5 to 8 PhD students each year. But we have also to consider those who don't know the forum.

I don't, but you know, when I was reviewing one of the Art History threads from previous years here in gradcafe maybe a month ago, I saw a post by somebody asking if it's true that University of Toronto takes only one international student each year?

  5. Well, it's a hard question to answer. It might be a great experience and it might let you to have a better perspective, but as far as I know, most of the experts on Ottoman/Islamic art and architecture (who are working in America) have done MA/PhD here. (Please correct me if I'm wrong.) So I feel doing the MA in America would be more helpful to get into a prestigious PhD program, if that's your final goal.

@baddie Are you international or Canadian?

I'm international. I remember you were accepted to the program! Do you mind if I ask you whether you accepted their offer?

Thank you, that's what I thought! Do you happen to know if it's best to email the admin people, email the DGS, or call? I know it's acceptable at this point but it *feels* so rude and like there should be very specific etiquette for doing this.

It really depends. For example if you have exchanged bunch of emails with your POI, it is okay to ask him/her about the process. Otherwise, I'd send a short email to Student/Graduate Affairs person.

I know it might sound rude, but when you have to make decisions, it is logical. Needless to say, this is only how I feel about it. :)

Does anyone have any experience contacting Williams to ask for an application update? They seem to send out rejections pretty late, and I just want to know now so I can hurry up and get uncomplicatedly excited about one of my other offers. Or to know if there's still a slight chance of admittance and that I should ask for an extension to decide! On that note, does anyone have experience asking Canadian schools for such extensions?

Well, I don't specifically talk about Williams College, but in my point of view, it is totally fine to ask for an application update in mid-March from anywhere.

Oh no, just the University of Kentucky so far. I know, UK is misleading (in KY it's common of course, but I really should switch when discussing it elsewhere...). UKy, maybe?

Hahaha.. my bad! Right, Kentucky is UK and Kansas is KU.

UK is such a heavy acronym though, it's hard to read it without a fancy accent!

Hey that's me! Thanks! I didn't bother posting because most of the art history folks seemed to be applying to bigger schools, but if anyone else here has applied or has gone there, hit me up.

Congratulations! I'm happy for you!!! And you got into somewhere in UK as well?

I got into Columbia for MA in Asian Art! But with no funding.

Well, it is not a problem for me since I did not spend much for undergrad (on a full-tuition scholarship). But still, the living expensive in NYC might just kill me right now.

And they are already pressuring me into making the decision. Is it okay to email my other schools at this point?

You can always email schools but I guess being honest with Columbia and asking more time from them might be a more productive option.

Hi! Until today my status was "Decision Made" but it switched to "Under Review" again a few hours ago... I've applied for a PhD in Art History and if you go to the results page for UofT this happened to all Art History applicants... Right now I am feeling very anxious as I emailed my potential supervisor last week and I haven't got a reply, yet...The same with the department.

I just rechecked the SGS website, my status is switched to "Under Review" as well!!

Mostly depression and anxiety. I was fresh out of undergraduate with a studio degree, and everyone in my class either had a Masters or a previous career in the museum setting. This did wonders for my growing case of "Imposter Syndrome." Also my advisor was on the other side of the country, which made it difficult to foster any sort of relationship. And I was misguided by my alma mater Kent State into thinking it was normal for studio and art history departments to be close. This is not the case for most programs, as it turns out.

There was nothing wrong with the program. My advisor and my instructors were decent people and knew their stuff. I loved Richmond, The Virginia Museum of Fine Arts, the graduate teaching assistantship, and even the historic building. It was just... incredibly isolating, since the building was only open 8:30-4:30 and there was no graduate study room at the University library at the time. I consider myself very introverted, and I was just going crazy not being around people or having any friends.

SO if this is your first time going into graduate school, the best advice I have is don't let yourself become completely isolated, even if you think you can handle it. Make an effort to put together a study group and to get dinner out sometimes.

I hear you.. thanks for sharing your experience. This part of being in a PhD program was actually something I had never considered.
