This is what I got  about the OGS summer. It could be difficult to reach 12 consecutive weeks with only 2 summer courses which is the max courseload

You need to be registered for 12 consecutive weeks.  Typically, you take a directed reading course SWk4801H Special Studies that meets over the 12 weeks.

if your in the two year program your practicum counts as a summer course.

  2. do you think you will make 100,000 a year upon graduation or soon? Also that kind of debt can very easily derail your career especially in IR. You won't be able to take that low paying think tank job in DC etc or work with an interesting NGO after graduation. Also considering you will be probably working in an expensive city so 100,000+ will impact your life in many ways, multiple roommates etc for the foreseeable future. I wouldn't unless I already had amazing IR experience and was mid career and knew for sure I could get a job paying atleast $70k+. IR is a field where you really have to pay your dues so the less debt your carrying the better.

August 31, 2018. It goes for 3 semesters and I started my program in September.

okay my award ends May 1st. Seems like its easy to change:

    Change of Start Date

Before commencing the award, the award recipient may request to change the start date to any other start date available to award recipients for that funding opportunity. To request an available start date other than the one selected at the time of application, send an email to the appropriate program contact.

    Hi all,

I have been offered a CIHR CGS-M award at my institution. When I went to click "Accept" for my offer, they gave me a choice of 3 date (may 1, 2018, another date in 2018, and another date in 2019). I'm half asleep right now but I clicked the may 1, 2018 and now I'm freaking out because I'm still currently under another scholarship that goes until August 31, 2018. My institution will only allow me to hold one scholarship at a time. Am I screwed?

when does your other scholarship end? curious because this may apply to me too.

Hmmmmm you know what it actually makes a lot of sense, I honestly thought it would take longer than one year though since my second BA at york u took me 2 years.

thank you for bringing this to my awareness. Which schools offer this program and does it go by a particular name or is it just a BSW?

York, Lakehead, and I believe McGill offers this as well.

What is that ? a BSW degree like an undergrad?

If it was I was kind of hoping not to go down that road again. I did a BA honours in Political Science at Western U in 2010, and then went back to York U to do a BA honours in Psychology in 2014. I think if I got another Bachelor, I would be a pretty well rounded candidate for Jeopardy.

It's a one year degree that would give you a BSW degree but it would also make your MSW one year so you don't really lose time. The first year of a two year MSW is basically a post degree BSW.

My application at york u for msw shows reviewed - unsuccessful today

and I was waitlisted at u of t.

Hard to bite the bullet but I guess I'll think about either switching career paths or continue to work for another year and re-apply next year. I don't know what else to do to improve my application as my GPA and work experience were as good as I thought they could get.

Congrats to everyone who was accepted.

Is a 1 BSW an option?

Hi @canadianmsw329 I asked that question at the information session I went to last August and I was advised that even if you don't get into the the JD program you can get into the MSW. Angela also advised me that if I were to get into the 2 year MSW this year and got into JD the following year, you can still do the combined program. I confirmed the information with the faculty of law.

I will be applying to U of T's MSW next year, I wish I didn't miss the deadline. I applied to york and didn't get in and still waiting for Laurier but I'm assuming if I didn't get into York, I probably won't get into Laurier. I thought I had a great application interms of grades and references but truth be told I lacked in experience. All I had was a few hours volunteering at Catholic Children's Aid.

I wouldn't assume that. York tends to be the most competitive cause the class size is so small and everyone gets generous funding.

Congrats to everyone who has been accepted. Can you share your past experiences and grades?

I was waitlisted last year at u of t and I am sort of confused as to why this keeps happening to me. I asked Angela last year for feedback but they are always reluctant to help.

Grades: Last two years I had one B+, 3 A+ and the rest of A's. I had an A in Research Methods.

Experience: Two full years of part-time work studies in student engagement, 3 years of sitting on a provincial mental health youth focused board (through this experience I got to plan and attend many conferences, create policy documents, plan workshops on youth engagement etc), 1 year of volunteering with a youth sexual health organization, 1 funded summer international internship through my university's international office, a summer research internship at a youth non profit org, 1 year of residence programming, 1 year of sitting on a government related board as a youth, participant of my undergraduate research fair and some other things here and there. Sounds like alot but I was lucky to get a really good opportunity that led to other things. If people want to know where I find good opportunities or what specific organizations I was involved with message me!

SO grateful another thread has been started, thank you Roxanne.

I've applied to Windsor, Laurier, UofT and Waterloo for the advanced standing MSW.

I was waitlisted a couple of years ago for the two year program. Since then I've completed the HBSW at Lakehead, and a graduate certificate in Youth Justice at Durham College.

I'm feeling very discouraged this application cycle as I wasn't in the right head space when I wrote my applications. Once again, I'm very grateful to not have to experience this stress alone.

    Good luck everyone! :)

if you don't mind me asking what was your average when you were waitlisted for the two year program?
