MIT BCS interview by phone this morning!

Congrats! I was thinking they were done. You've given me some hope that I might yet hear from them. So far, I've gotten 6/9 interviews, but MIT is my top choice.

I noticed that you've applied to both neuro and bioscience programs, like harvard's BBS. In retrospect, I wish I done the same since some of the labs at Harvard that I wanted are neuro labs but also available to BBS applicants. Given that this was such a competitive year for PiN, applying to BBS was probably a good way of getting a foot in the door even if it means not being a member of PiN.

I think you have the right idea - A suit would probably be overkill. I saw one person at my Columbia and OHSU interviews wear a suit. If it makes you feel more confident and comfortable, I think you could wear one, but you would probably be the only person wearing one. Most of the guys wore slacks and a button down shirt, no tie. A few guys wore dark colored jeans. One guy wore sneakers, and I thought he looked out of place. One guy wore bow ties all weekend at my Harvard interview, which was fun and memorable!

If you are worried, as someone earlier suggested on this thread, you could bring a backpack with extra clothes or a tie. You will have breaks and would have time to change if you felt under or over dressed. And usually they will have a place you can drop off your bag, either in an administrative office or a lab with your student host.

Thanks! I was planning, and prefer, wearing chinos with a dress shirt and probably a sport jacket. Just wasn't sure if I needed to wear a tie. Now I have my answer.

In the meantime, hoping to get a few more interviews.

Why are suits a no? I think most of the guys in my interviews actually wore them, and many of the program directors were wearing them too. I think it's always good to have a suit in your closet, and this is the best occassion to purchase and wear one

Were you, by chance, interviewing for neuro programs? I know that guys wear suits for med school interviews but I had the impression that for neuro phd programs, a dress shirt and chinos with a sport jacket would be appropriate.

It depends on the field and its norms. My field, for instance, is very informal, so wearing a suit would be serious overkill, even at a job interview. You have to know how to fit in.

I'll be interviewing for neuroscience programs. Any idea of what's appropriate?

I'm waiting for Columbia, too, as well as MIT. Not sure if MIT is done sending out emails. They seem to be handling this cycle differently from previous, maybe because like Harvard they received a record number of applicants. In years past, they sent out emails over several days. Not sure if that will change this year.

Yep - around 450 applicants, 51 interviewed. Last year something like 33/45 were accepted, I don't know whether they're planning to lower the acceptance rate or increase the class size. Last year the total applicants were under 400 (350?) so this is a pretty big one-year increase.

Thanks for the information. Wow, that's a huge increase in applicants.

HILS are very different programs, don't lump them together because they're all separate. My understanding is BBS admits 90-95% of those they interview, the culling happens before interviews.

I'd love to know what percent of Harvard PiN applicants got an interview this year and how many will be admitted. They supposedly got a record number of applicants.

  8. I only see one MIT post on the results page. Am I missing some others, or did you see the one as well?

I just checked out last year's interview dates on the results page and people got invites on Dec 15, 21, 27, 30 and on jan 11. Some were done through emails, others by phone. Seems like we've got time before assuming we're passed over.

  9. It seems from the results page that MIT invites went out around this time during the last several years, but also that they went out over a few days rather than all on a day. Hoping to hear from them, too.

And what he ^ said. This is a tough process. One of my top choices hasn't sent me an invite...gotta move on & hope for the best.
