I'm new to Grad Cafe, and it looks like I missed all the excitement! I'm relieved, though, that we are approaching the end of this harrowing journey– less than a month before final decisions must be made! With this in mind, please kindly remember to submit final decisions sooner rather than later. I have submitted a couple declinations, and it is tough to write to professors with whom you have developed friendly rapports. However, there are so many wonderfully qualified and deserving waitlisted candidates who are eagerly awaiting news, though, and grad programs do have spots to fill!

Hello, and welcome! That is wonderful advice. I've also send out my declinations, etc. Have you decided where you want to go?

I used to work outside year-round, so I've had this for the last couple years: https://www.thenorthface.com/shop/mens-mcmurdo-parka-ii-cql4

Definitely Michigan-ready! Congrats on your recent success as well.

Congrats on Michigan! You'll get used to the cold, and I need to get used to the heat, because I'm going to go to FSU. This pasty-white Wisconsinite is going to be very sunburnt...

    Hi everyone (first time user),

I had an interview to UPenn PhD program (Fall 2017) on Jan. 23. Since then I did not hear from the department or the graduate school.

Would you say it is alright to reach out someone at the department and ask for information?

    Thanks

Welcome!! Did they give any indication as to when they'd get back to students after the interviews? It has been a while, and if you're waiting on other offers it would probably be OK to email them and politely ask about when they hope to give decisions.

Ended up choosing Trinity, though I'm still on the wait list for Tulane. I'm excited - my undergrad institution is pretty much the opposite of picturesque Trinity in every way, plus moving to Dublin for a year will be a nice change of pace before coming back for the PhD. Good luck to everyone who is still waiting and/or deciding!

    Congratulations!!!

  4. Just got back from Cinny--it was an action-packed weekend, and I couldn't have been more impressed! It was intense and I'm exhausted. With that said, how are all of you holding up toward the end of this harrowing application cycle?

  5. Hey again, everyone! I'm attending a prospective student weekend at the University of Cincinnati tomorrow/this weekend, and I was wondering if any of you have good interview/first impression advice? Any questions you can think of that they may commonly ask about? Anything you shouldn't do/should avoid doing? Thanks, and best of luck to everyone still!

Hey @terraaurea - as someone who was in a v similar situation (no money, parents in huge debt, recently lost our home, etc) I agree - go where the money is, go where there is funding. You won't regret that in the slightest. It will allow you to concentrate on your work much better as well. There might be people out there who tell you that education is priceless and, sure, I guess so in some ways, but people who make this claim usually don't know what it's like to be poor/ in debt/ have terrible credit. Do what you can to keep yourself in the best position. Plus, FSU is a fantastic program! This sounds like a great option :)

I agree. To me education is priceless, but in the long run. In the short run, you need to have somewhere to live, food, and other necessities, and having to worry about those things has been hard enough as an undergraduate, let alone as a graduate student! I still have my interview weekend in Cincinnati for their Classics PhD this week, and they offer 7 years of funding, plus a stipend, etc. if you are accepted. If I do not get in there FSU sounds like it will be a great choice.

I agree w/virgil; that sounds like a good decision. I've seen a lot of FSU alumni on the current student lists of top programs. It's a marathon, not a sprint (as I always try to remind myself)! And a funded MA is definitely something to be proud of. Is there a reason you're not considering Boulder anymore?

I agree. Their faculty do have a lot of good links to research I'm interested in, on top of the funding. I'm also emailing the faculty asking for more information about certain things that I'm interested in doing (e.g. GIS) and how I can gain experience in that at FSU. Some of their faculty are in to landscape arch., which I'm happy about.

As for Boulder, the reason I'm having trouble considering it is because they can't guarantee funding. Money is a huge issue with me given my financial situation, and so if I can get a good education in my MA for nearly free versus being in debt, that would be cool.

  9. New update. So I got into Cornell's MA program in Archaeology! The problem is that they can only offer a $2,500 fellowship...Kind of disappointed because their research is what I'm the most interested in, but I don't think there's any way that I could afford living there unless I were to receive much more funding than that. FSU is offering me full funding, with a job as a TA and a small health insurance package. So if I do not make it into the University of Cincinnati's Classics program then that's probably where I would need to go. Being as poor as my family is and with our bad credit taking out loans isn't a possibility, and so it would be silly to turn down full funding. I know FSU has a good program and that the money is great, but I can't help but be a little disappointed still...I'm trying to look on the bright side regardless.

  10. Also as an update: I've gotten into FSU (don't know if I said that already) and Boulder! Right now Boulder can't guarantee funding. But, FSU offered me a full funding package with a stipend and a small health insurance package. I'm really not wanting to live in Florida by preference, but it's hard to turn down a good deal like that...

Still waiting because I have my Cincinnati interview next week, which if I got in would blow everything else out of the water. Plus waiting to hear from Cornell's MA still.

Have you guys heard any pros/cons about the Classics programs at FSU and Boulder?

I can't. But I have to choose whether doing the PhD is right in the end. It's a long time for a thing that probably won't pay off.

My interests are in Roman Provincial archaeology and GIS/Statial analysis/landscape archaeology. My interest in getting a PhD is my own personal goal on top of helping with the job market. My interests in GIS will help me in the end even if I can't get a job in academia, though. Consider what skills you would get through the PhD and then consider it.

Hey all, been lurking on here for ages....taking the plunge and posting.

Congrats all on offers and interviews. I am myself interviewing at Cincinnati next week, it seems a decent program, despite the recent 'problems' they've had there, but what do people feel about it overall, I guess it doesn't seem a 'top' program, but it's the only place I've heard back from. So what do y'all think?

Awesome, maybe I'll see you there next week then! My profs consider it to be a top program given their research projects in Pompeii, etc. I guess it depends on what your field of study is (I'm archaeology). And this is all despite that one big problem. Are they any issues you know of other than the big elephant in the room?

  13. Welp, didn't make the shortlist for Cornell's Classics PhD. I'm disappointed because that was my top choice because I love the research they are doing there and felt really connected to it. However, I did put the Archaeology MA as my second choice, so they're sending my app to it. It just looks like in the past they haven't really offered much--or any funding--to the MA students. I guess we'll just have to see!

Not me, good luck! But I did get into CUNY Grad Center MA Classics yesterday. I was kind of discounting the program because the offerings are so literature-focused and I'm into material culture/arch, but I found out you can cross-register with NYU ISAW and Columbia... it's messing with my mental ranking of choices, haha.

Congrats!! That is really interesting. I guess I would check out the facility at those places to see if you'd be happy cross-registering.

Does anyone know anything about Princeton's timeline this year?

I'm afraid I have no idea, but best of luck! I don't know if I've asked, but what are your research interests, @ploutarchos

On a side note, I was accepted at FSU (MA in Classics) with funding! Anybody have any further knowledge about their program? (any info that has made its way down the grapevine?)

What do you think about Cornell's and/or Chicago's program?

More Roman art/archaeology! Did you apply to Classics or Art History at Cornell? I'm waiting to hear back from Cornell's Classics program.

Looks like someone heard back from Bryn Mawr's Classical and Near Eastern Archaeology program already--way back on Feb 1 through the mail. Should I assume I'm out if I haven't heard?

It may be a stretch now if they heard back on the 1st, but you never know! Also know that some (though not all) schools will send out waitlist notifications a good while after the first acceptances. I'm not sure about Bryn Mawr specifically, though.

Does anybody know what UCLA' interview policy is with regard to foreign applicants. I have not heard from them, which most likely means they are not interested, but if they were they could not send an overseas invitation anyway. I am curious to know how they handle overseas interviews

I honestly have no idea, but I would think that they would be able to do a Skype interview or something?

Thanks! My app to UCLA is for archaeology, although all of my others are for classics. The indepartmental nature of the Cotsen Institute really appealed to me.

And thanks @pro Augustis for the insight! Definitely looking forward to the visit.

Coooool. Where all did you apply to? I think I can cross UCLA off my list now because I have yet to hear back from them. Cotsen is a great program, congrats!!

Hey there! Long time time lurker, first time poster. Congrats to eveybody who has received good news to everyone else, keep perservering! I have some interviews coming up and I am incredibly nervous about them. Just for context, they are at Duke, UT Austin, amd UCLA (it's going to be a busy couple of weeks haha). I am totaly not sure what to expect. What are the odds of getting rejected after interviewing? My greatest fear, which I am told is somewhat unreasonable, is some sort of pop translation quiz. I am an archaeologist and sight reading still terrifies me. I dont even know what to wear! I have a suit, but that seemes like it might be overkill... Any advice would be greatly apreciated.

Hello!! Congrats on your interviews (3, wow!). I was waitlisted at UT Austin, and they're only accepting 3 people I think this year, so you're one lucky dude so far! I've never heard of a pop translation quiz and pray that isn't what awaits me for any interviews--oh jeez...I hate sight reading...

  20. Oh jeez, that's insane. I'm surprised they hadn't taken the page down after so long.

My cringe-worthy thing isn't nearly as bad. I accidentally wrote that I was applying for the PhD program in Archaeology at BU in my personal statement--when they aren't even offering a PhD this year and I meant the MA. They didn't care apparently being that they just accepted me. Otherwise I hope so far I haven't found anything too cringeworthy about my apps (yet)...

My other big area of interest (besides Magna Graecia) is the Severan dynasty, especially its monumental architecture and self-representation, so I'm really interested in Kleiner's work on monuments. But three people have posted acceptances to the PhD in the past 24 hours, so I'm rapidly losing hope... we must persevere!

Keep up hope! Monumental architecture is the bomb. Also the Severans were known in the imperial cult thing, so there's that fun stuff (I'm studying imperial cult on Cyprus and the Severans had an actual self-rep presence there). Waiting to hear back is killing me so badly, but I'm trying to hold in there, too...we can do it!
