Congrats! That's exciting. I'm waiting on BU art history, very interested in working with a certain prof who's jointly appointed in both depts ;)

    What prof? Kleiner?

Agreed - I'm from the NY burbs so commuting to Columbia's program seemed like a good fallback... until I saw the price

Yeah, it's crazy even for someone who lives near there! I'm from Wisconsin so if I need to go far away I need to be confident in any of my decisions, ha. My boyfriend applied to Columbia's bioethics program (he wants to do a masters there while waiting to hear back from med schools--because that masters takes only 1 year). However, he wants to be a surgeon, so any debt that he wracks up isn't going to take long to get rid of in the long run. I'll be paying debt for 1000000000 years no matter what, on the other hand.

@terraaurea I'm not an expert by any means, but it looks like there are federal loans available for Columbia's post-bac if you're at least enrolled half-time+ http://sps.columbia.edu/certificates/classics-certificate/tuition-and-financing/financial-resources

As obnoxiously expensive as Columbia's post bacc program is, it's impressive that they even have a financing page and it seems like there's the possible option of part-time matriculation so that you're possibly eligible for federal aid. Most programs go "this post bacc isn't even a certificate so good luck finding any money--also you're not eligible for federal funding".

  4. This process is just terrible, but I'm glad there are so many good people here on Gradcafe to talk to about all of this!!

I've got a great interview weekend coming up--much to my chagrin that I might live far away from everyone I know and love--but the program (University of Cincinnati) is just so good that I could never turn them down if they offered me admission. Then I'm on a waitlist, then have one rejection so far. I anticipate two more rejections (UCLA and Michigan-Ann Arbor) because they would have contacted me by now I think if they wanted to offer me anything. 5 more to go...

  5. Because some of you all might know, random question. When it comes to Postbacc programs in Classics, what is the deal with FAFSA/financial aid? I'm just thinking worst-case scenario that I don't get in anywhere, which is a possibility. My parents are homeless and make very, very minimal income, and I myself don't really have any savings. Being able to attend any undergrad at all has depended upon financial aid. My family also has a history of terrible credit scores, so private loans have never been a viable option.

    Any knowledge on this? Thanks!

@terraaurea archaeology must be even more tricky then classics to apply to, because they must have fieldwork capacities I guess. I would normally not apply to Ivy League myself, but the application fee were not too bad, and the faculty matched my interests very well, but at hindsight, I regretted the effort and time spent

It's incredibly complicated and frustrating. I wouldn't have bothered applying if I hadn't had access to a fee waiver (I'm dirt poor).

There was an automatic email sent out saying that the decision was made on the website. So I checked it and there was a standard rejection letter.

I should mention too that it's for the Joukowsky Institute, so archaeology. For anybody waiting on classics, etc.

@terraaureaI guess mine will be the second one! Have they sent a letter or did you check their site?

Just received an email inviting me to visit UCLA Feb 22-25.  I am quite excited!

That's fantastic, congrats!! What program did you apply to? (I ask because I'm waiting on news from archaeology). Good job so far everyone!

Based on previous years' results, Harvard and Brown should be sending their interview requests in the next few days. Good luck!

(I'm not applying to either, but WOW: Brown in particular looks absurdly competitive, if the results page is any indication.)

The Brown archaeology page is like that too. It's Brown though so I'm not surprised.

  11. I'm super tempted to email some programs (IPCAA and UCLA) just to ask about statuses because in the very-VERY unlikely event that I would need to attend their prospective weekends I would need to cancel some prior plans. I'm trying to hold off until Tuesday or Wednesday this week though, just in case those rejections/rare invitations were to come in at the beginning of this week...Though at the same time it's very tempting because UCLA in the past has gotten to people before this date in the past, as has IPCAA. So I don't want to be waiting around for no reason when they could just straight up tell me about the rejection/waitlist/etc.

Last year's cohort (mine) at UT was extremely large. As a result, this year they are being quite selective in admissions.

They did mention that in the email. Why did they accept so many last year? Were all of you guys just that awesome ;)

Thank you! I guess we get exactly the same information. It would be a long wait. Who knows how many they put on the list.

    I think so, too.

Hi terraaurea! I got the same email from UT Austin as well. Do they tell you where you stand with them on the waiting list?

Hey there! They didn't. They just said that they can't give me updates until April and that I should tell them if I accept elsewhere.

  14. Just got waitlisted at UT-Austin. Not really surprised or disappointed because I had trouble really picking faculty whose research I liked a lot to mention in my personal statement. Wasn't super feeling it. Better than a rejection, though.

Congrats!!! University of Cincinnati is one of the top programs in the US for classics. Two of my undergraduate professors have a house in Cincinnati and both are classics professors and one worked at Cincinnati at one point. Cincinnati was only about an hour and a half from where I did my undergraduate work.

Thanks!! Great faculty, library, program--it's fantastic! I'm looking forward to seeing the campus and meeting everyone. Where did you do your undergrad?
