True, Oxford does have that. There is no requirement to teach/attend seminars at Edinburgh but of course, I am "encouraged" to do so. Regardless, this would still be in my first two years, while I prep for/begin field work. My third year should really just be analysing the data and writing it up, so I am thinking they might be okay with my not being in Edinburgh for that (although I'd get have to get my supervisor on board with this..).

Found an old regulation of theirs that mentions residence requirements to be: student must be in Edinburgh, and can be away for 15 months in total including field work/academic research. I am not sure how it works in practice, and if permissions for longer than 15 months can be granted in case of long term partnerships/family situations.

Hi everyone! I had applied for PhD programs in Social Intervention/Education at Oxford and Edinburgh. Received offers from both, and a scholarship from Edinburgh (awaiting funding decisions from Oxford). In the meantime, I have a query about doing a PhD at Edinburgh if anybody here has an insight into it! Does anyone know/have an idea of the residency requirements there? My partner works in London, so I'd ideally like to move in with him after my fieldwork is completed in my second year of the PhD, and then write up my PhD from there. Does anyone know if this is possible and whether there are any procedures to make this happen? Do you feel that Edinburgh Uni will be fine with someone moving away for the final 1 - 1.5 years of their PhD?

Hi everyone! This is not a strictly Oxford-related query but I hope you can help! I have received a scholarship in Edinburgh for a PhD Education. Does anyone know/have an idea of the residency requirements there? My partner works in London, so I'd ideally like to move in with him after my fieldwork is completed in my second year of the PhD, and then write up my PhD from there. Does anyone know if this is possible and whether there are any procedures to make this happen? I know Oxford has a residence requirement too, that you should be in Oxford for six terms (or something), do you feel other universities in the UK will be fine with someone moving away for the final 1 - 1.5 years of their PhD?

I will! I hope you let me know too -- the last time when they pushed my application to be evaluated with the January round, I didn't even know till I wrote to them..I think they got my email wrong/forgot to email or something :/ Glad I can now check with someone else lol

Well, I suppose they are not like US PhDs where there's more funding, but there are definitely a number of fully funded scholarships! Clarendon funding and departmental scholarships in my case for the DPhil at Oxford - let's see what happens though! Good luck with your apps!
-
Yeah, I have received an offer from Edinburgh, but no word on funding (yet) from them. Have you applied anywhere else? Good luck with your scholarship apps! I am pretty much relying on university funding if I get in.
-
Oh damn, that is unfortunate! Is this for an external scholarship? I guess the university scholarships are all automatic ones.. Really hope we hear soon!
-
No, I haven't heard anything from the Department either Argh! I suppose we won't be hearing anything this week seeing as it's Friday and there's been nothing so far..
-
Oh great! It should be okay then. Me too -- I just want to know, one way or another!

Hey! Yeah I do have an MSc from DSPI, and know my potential supervisors. I am not sure if that is why they have not reached out for an interview so far -- no idea! In answer to your question though, yes, I did speak to someone who did their MSc from DSPI as well, and they had no interview either. I don't think it necessarily relates to whether or not you did your MSc at DSPI, but whether you had contact with your potential supervisors before you submitted your application, and whether they were familiar with your topic/informally agreed to take you on...? That is just my take on it.
-
Yeah fingers crossed! Good luck with your application!

Yay, a fellow applicant! No, I haven't heard back anything about the interview either. From what I have heard, interviews are not always held -- some candidates get offers without an interview as well. I figure that we will get to know the results by March end anyway, and they can't delay much more than that! So I am just trying to let it go and not think about it too much.

Oooooh I have applied for the DPhil Social Intervention. I haven't heard anything either It's driving me a bit crazy at this point because I submitted my app in November and then got pushed to the January deadline. My supervisor said the panel is meeting this week and I think we should know latest by next week.

Hi everyone! Just checking in to see how things are going. I have applied for a DPhil with the Department of Social Policy & Intervention on November 18 but received an email in January that my application was pushed to the Jan deadline. I finished my MSc in the same Department in 2015-16 and know my supervisors pretty well. Experiencing lots of anxiety and checking my email a lot but I don't think I can hope to hear back before March. Anyone applying to the same course/same department?
