  1. Hi - I'm from New York. It's fairly difficult to find a building that will let you sign a lease more than 4 weeks in advance. (the exception would be new developments that are eager to get their units rented) So, it's best to time your search when you're ready to move. One way to do it is to go to sublet.com and sublet an apt for a month before your move and use that as your search period. The best website I recommend for finding apartments in NY is www.streeteasy.com - which lists broker and no fee apts - or www.nybits.com, which lists no fee only. I don't recommend craigslist - unless you're looking for roommates or a share. Brokers aren't going to scam you - they're just an additional expense that's only worth paying if you don't have the time and energy to look for yourself (however, they do have some listings that you won't be able to get to). Hope that helps.
  2. Hi - Does anyone have a take on using social network sites while at grad school? Will you friend colleagues - professors? Is any one deleting their facebook page - or starting one? Anyone heard of network sites specific to their field of study?

    NYU IFA

mefoarth - Their website claims to accept 40 students a year, so I don't think this acceptance is out of the ordinary. And this is the MA program, you can't compare it to the 10 or less students accepted to direct-entry PhD programs. clv - I don't think that that's the case. It seems that most graduate programs need/want first year students and MA students to pay tuition - whether its because they need it to subsidize phd students or because they don't want to waste money on people who will drop out - either way if you're not a direct to PhD student I wouldn't take it as a sign that the school is less reputable (or just taking you for your money) just because you're being asked to pay. (but also when I spoke to them on the phone they mentioned that this MA degree is really more geared towards those who want to enter commercial art - so take that for what it is) shadow (Or anyone else who has been to the IFA) I've heard a lot about the students - but what about the professors - What kinds of relationships do they have with their students? Did you find them to be generally available and friendly - or was it difficult to get feedback from them? Do they socialize with the students or keep to themselves? I realize I'm asking about all the professors - but maybe you can generalize about the atmosphere and the advising situation? - it would be really helpful, thanks!
  4. Is there anyone who is still waiting for notification from NYU IFA. I applied for PhD with the option to be considered for Masters. I live in NY.
  5. Thanks everyone for your responses - it really puts things into perspective and I appreciate the advice.
  6. As I was making a post in the Courtauld thread I received an email regarding my scholarship application and have just discovered I will be getting no money to go to school in London. I was hoping someone could shed some light on the situation - anyone at the courtauld? or anyone who knows about the school? I was under the impression that they were in a fairly good financial situation so I was absolutely not expecting NO FUNDING - especially being an international student. I'm wondering if I should be offended - or if I'm wrong in thinking that most international students get some money. While I'm on the topic could anyone give me their opinion on the Courtauld - I ultimately want to get my PHD in America - so would be going for just an MA. Is there an advantage/disadvantage to getting an MA at a school different to the one you ultimately want to get a phd from. I'm thinking wider exposure and more contacts versus building relationships... I definitely feel a little less wanted now...
  7. Just wondering if anyone here is considering the Courtauld - and what their thoughts are. Has anyone received a funding offer yet?
  8. Looks like IFA is sending out notifications! Any posters care to share their subfield - funding offers ?
  9. To those who had IFA interviews last week - if you don't mind me asking - did they give you any idea of when decisions would be made?
  10. I've also heard that scrambling together some extra letters of recommendation could help a lot. And if you have done anything significant (research or the like) since you sent out your application, to update them on what you have been doing since December.
  11. Hi - I noticed that there were some NYU IFA - Phd Applicants who mentioned they would be interviewing. I knew that conservation students would be interviewing, but are they really interviewing Phd applicants as well? If I didn't get an interview should I assume a reject? Thanks.
