  1. I've received an offer from the Department of Mathematical Sciences of Carnegie Mellon. I notice that the "note on the office of international education" (which they mailed to me several days ago) wrote that "The tuition and stipend we give is close to enough to cover all expenses BUT not quite enough, last year there was a $424.00 difference." Does this mean I have to pay the difference myself? What's more, I find from the "Internatilnal Student Information Form 2010" that the 12 month minimum expenses for academic year 2010-2011 is $18588, which exceeds my TA stipend($18000). And the Form says "the minimum amount of funding you provide must equal or exceed the expenses ($18588)". Does this mean I have to provide funds other than the TA stipend (such as personal funds) in order to get my I-20 Form?
  2. Thanks. You mean in CMU only Shreve are doing well in financial math?
  3. I applied to both ICES and the mathematics department of UT-Austin but the application result of the former hasn't come out. I'm interested in optimization, math finance and scientific computing
  4. I have received 5 offers (all Ph.D in Applied MAthematics) and I'm particularly interested in two of them: AppMath@UT-Austin, Appmath@Carnegie Mellon。 It's really hard for me to make choice since these two institutions both have their own shining points. UT-Austin is stronger in the traditional branches of appled math such as scientific computing, numerical analysis, optimization, etc... CMU is stronger in financial math, discrete optimization and is more famous to people outside the acdemic. Both Pittsburgh and Austin are amazing cities.. Does anyone help me to make the decision? Thx very much!!
  5. I applied two PhD programs of UT-Austin: the mathematics program and the CSEM program. The former has given me an offer as Teaching Assistant while the application result of the latter hasn't come out. I think the CSEM program is a better choice for applied math student such as me. However, a professor from the Math Dept of Austin emails me and tells me that I can still study applied math within the mathematics program. Is anybody here familiar with the math program of Austin? I need your advice! Thanks a lot!

  7. Wow, it' s really a cool idea to consult Professor Ierene Fonseca..
  8. Sorry..I don't mean that CMU has a better reputation for applied math.. I'm talking about the university's general reputation, especially outside the academic world... I wonder how many people outside the academic would know about UMN's strenth in applied math.
  9. I major in applied mathematics and have received PhD offers from both UMN and CMU. UMN's applied math ranks very high(top 5), but its reputation cannot compare with CMU's. Besides, it's really cold in Minneapolis and winter lasts for 6 months. It's hard for me to make choice. Any suggestions?
  10. I guess you are from Fudan University.. Am I right?
  11. Hi sapling. I see in your profile that you've been admitted to many great institutions. Apart from CMU, there are Chicago, Umich, Columbia... Which one will you most probably accept?
  12. Thx a lot for your reply, robben. I think that CMU and UMD are stronger in academic pursuits than Rice, and if I want to take a job in industry after graduation, CMU is the best choice. But I also know that the AMSC program of Maryland is much more integrated than that of CMU, which means I can easily switch my field of research if I like. Wow... it's a hard decision! p.s. CMU promises a yearly stipend of 18k or more, not that "bad" I think. : )
  13. Thank you, errrr. In fact I want to take a job in industry rather than the academic world after graduation. You believe that UMD is not the best choice from this angle, right? Besides, can you tell me something more about Maryland? I'm interested why you call it the "worst city". : )
  14. Hi guys, I have received three offers(all PhD Programs): Applied Mathematics @ Carnegie Mellon Applied Math, Statistics and Scientific Computing @ University of Maryland Computational and Applied Math @ Rice University Does anybody know detailed information about these programs? It's hard for me to make the decision. I appreciate your kind help!
