Yes, we do! Exciting news is on the horizon.

My research interests are in carceral studies/sociology of punishment, critical race theory, social inequality, and media portrayals of race, crime, and punishment (and the link between these portrayals and public opinion/policy). I've applied to both criminology/criminal justice programs and sociology programs. Of the sociology ones, I believe my best fits to be UW-Madison, UMass Boston, and (sadly) Berkeley. UW and Berkelely both have faculty who are really strong in racial inequality and imprisonment, and UMass Boston has faculty who seem to do a lot of work with penal policy.

I dreamt last night that I got an email from Wisconsin, but I woke up before I could read the decision. Not even in my dreams can I get the sweet relief of hearing back from somewhere.

I applied! I have absolutely no idea how competitive it'll be though.

Has anyone heard anything from Wisconsin? It looks like last year decisions came out the end of January so I've been checking my email all day long.

I just read an article saying that UCI is pushing to increase the number of its doctoral students by 35% over the next 5 years, so here's to hoping that might help out our chances!

I'm also a Berkeley rejection. My first rejection, and despite how much of a reach I know it was, I definitely still felt the sting.

I counted that too haha. I wish they had given more detail about the interview format. Fingers crossed it's not a group one!

I got mine today too! It seems like the faculty meetings will be one on one with each faculty member and then maybe a group interview? I really don't know though. That's just a guess. And it looks like their cohort sizes are around 10 each year. I've heard that schools usually admit roughly double the number of the cohort that they want, so maybe around 20. But again, that's also just a guess. If anybody actually knows the answers, I'd also love to know.

Sorry, I can't answer your questions either. But I'm also going to the recruitment event, and it's comforting to hear that others are as nervous and unsure of what to expect as I am!
