    Congrats to the Yale admit!

And dear the Yale insider, may I ask if Dr. Davis is accepting new grad student this year?

I don't think so, but the list doesn't specify the admitted students' potential advisors. Also, Professor Davis' on leave right now. That's why I didn't ask for her reference letter in spite of the fact that I've taken two courses and an independent study with her.

Grats! How were you able to visit in November? Are you a current student there?

I'm also wondering how the other person from the results page saw the list of those accepted... I'm eager to hear back from Yale!

Actually CCS and other Yale Sociology workshops all welcome visitors. You can find out more on their websites.

This morning the DGS sent out a list of newly admitted students to current PhDs and faculty members in preparation for the visiting day on March 3.

Where is the insiders list that was talked about that people can see if they were accepted, waitlisted, or rejected from Yale?

I think all of the eight admitted students should've been notified by now. I could be wrong though. The Department had too many students last year, so there might not be a waitlist.

Anyone else going through waves of anxiety?  Haha.  One day I'm fine and willing to wait- the next I just want to know!!  But as I mentioned earlier, I met with a professor yesterday who told me that most schools are still early in the process, and that it will likely be another month of decisions.

SAME HERE! I've applied to nine programs. Accepted to none. Now I'm just wasting my life since I'm too anxious to do anything.

ANyone know whats happening with Yale, Boston College, or Brandies?

Current MA student at Yale. The Department has already decided on the date and time of the visiting event in March and sent out notifications to all of the currently enrolled PhD students. I'm guessing maybe by the end of this week we'll have something. The results're released on 10 Feb last year.

I hear ya! I also mentioned Grace Kao in my SOP, but included a few other faculty members. We'll see what happens!

Regarding 4-5 admits - this would actually be small, compared to the typical number of ADMITTED students. It would be stunning if 4-5 admits resulted in an entering class of 4-5 students. The conflation of the number of admitted students and the number of students in a first-rate cohort is surprisingly rampant on Grad Cafe whenever discussions about selectivity come into play (e.g., that ubiquitous post where someone says "school x gets 100 apps for 3 spots in their cohort!" and inaccurately concludes that the program's acceptance rate is 3%). Yale likely offers nearly twice the spots it needs to fill because plenty of people get in go elsewhere.

Yeah~ I agree that if Yale decides to fully fund 4-5 new students, it'll admit about 10 or more applicants. Let's survive the killing wait together!

@GeorgeC07 I kept an eye out for application-required information but I didn't find ways to know when I might be getting updates. In my recollection, only one university mentioned in their website the approximate dates that they will be sending out decisions. Did you get to know it via other informal channels, like this forum?

What I had in mind is very much like your estimation, from late January to early April, but I just got to know, also in this forum, that one university has already sent out interview invitations. BTW, it is UPenn. I didn't apply to their program, but it is still no joy knowing that some of the interviews should start so early. I hope I wouldn't be getting anything during Spring Festival!

It is always a pleasure to know people with similar backgrounds! There aren't so many Chinese? It is actually very hard for me to tell since i am pretty new here. Just got registered one week or so ago.

Where did you apply? I am applying to Sociology programs, and I have to say there are so few Chinese students applying to PhD in Sociology! I haven't got anyone to talk to about my application throughout the process, which is pretty frustrating.

@ruilinch Hi, there! I'm also from China, applying to nine Sociology programs. Nothing yet. Wechat: 327876988

Did yall hear about Grace Kao heading from UPenn to Yale? Big stuff. http://sociology.yale.edu/news/grace-kao-join-faculty

OMG!!!!!!!!!! I'm screwed. I'm currently doing a master at Yale and in my application to UPenn, I mentioned I'd be interested to work with Kao. How could I not know that??!!!!!!

Just heard from a professor at Yale that they only plann to accept 4 or 5 students this year. Tough odds!

    That's about the size.

Really?! that's the smallest entering class in like 10 years...

Not really actually.... in 2015 there're only two new students. But yeah, a quite famous professor from the department who wrote me a reference letter told me that since many professors were on leave, they needed to limit the size. Also, the department enrolled about ten students last fall. Bad news for us. Really tough time this year. The professor explicitly told me to apply to as many programs as possible and she'd be happy to upload the letter for my multiple times. So I figured my chance's slim.
