When I was in my masters program, I commuted 1.5-2 hours one way. The time spent driving honestly wasn't bad- it was the only "break" all day I had to myself where I was forced to do nothing but listen to music and chill. I was super busy because I worked full time, in addition to being a full time student and doing grad research. The only thing that sucked was that I had to drive into Washington, DC, where traffic and a-hole drivers were a daily nightmare. So if your school is in a high traffic area, I hope you have more patience than I do haha. My social life suffered a decent amount, but I made a really good friend, whom I'd frequently go to Happy hour with after class, so its not that I had no social life.
i don't think my academic life suffered much since I typically got my reading done during the day, and would sometimes stay at school until it was all done- this usually meant I would leave my house at like 6am and get home around 10-11pm, but I didn't mind since I just sleep when I get home.
i also second what fuzzy said about the weather. Sometimes an unexpected snowstorm or insufficient plowing increased my commute to 3-4 hours one way, which blew.
I'm assuming you have a good reason for living far from school, but I definitely feel your worries, 1) because I've done it already, and 2) im bracing to do it again for a year- my S/o is willing to move to a new state with me for my phd program, but postdocs are limited for him there, so we'd have to live in a halfway point between our two institutions
Tldr; as others said, there are many external factors that may get in the way, but my personal experience was that it wasn't that bad.
Best of luck!!
-edit-
just saw the reason for your commute would be because of your husband. Me personally, I decided that my quality of life would be much higher living with my S/o and commuting, rather than living apart and being close to school. Good luck!

I second that it depends on the Masters program. From success stories of people I know who got into funded PhD programs, they went into an experimental psychology masters program. They focused their thesis project to something related to clinical psychology and published. Also, their masters were *funded*. Yes, they do exist! One such program is William & Mary.
Agree that it likely depends on the program. I've also heard that "clean-slate" preference thing too, but I've heard (so take with a grain of salt) that it applies for clinical training in that they wanna train you in their clinical method from scratch. I'd think that experimental programs, which are primarily research focused, would be advantageous, since it'd give you research experience (especially if starting a research project from conception to conclusion). I completed one before applying, but my undergrad GPA was garbage, so it was kinda necessary lol. Also, at a place I interviewed, the DCT said that most of their PhD students come in with a masters, which I thought was really interesting.
I'm assuming if there's no lab manager position near you, there's also no research assistant jobs either? That'd be my initial recommendation since you have good stats otherwise, but if you can find a funded (or even partially funded) research masters program, that may be the best next step! Good luck!

I am waiting on a decision letter from Georgia Tech (PhD, ... Psychology). Until late last week the status was "to Dept. for review". It was finally changed to "Dept. Decision Made" but I still don't have a decision letter. A large part of me has accepted that this means I was rejected, but the dragging on with no official decision has me also ready to consider that perhaps I was on a waitlist. I contacted someone else who applied and they confirmed that their status was changed and they already received a rejection letter as of 7-10 days ago.
So now I'm asking for input and discerning judgement. Is it safe to say that I'm rejected and that I need to move on to whatever may be next?
If it were me, I'd assume rejection as well because I'd think that if it were an acceptance, I would have been personally contacted by the POI already. :/ But you never know, miracles could happen. Best of luck!!

Did you already take the GRE and do well? If so, there's probably no harm in submitting them, since sending the score reports aren't very expensive and it might show a strength. But if you didn't take it, or you took it and didn't do really well (e.g. Some people are bad test takers), then I probably would take the waiver? I've never been in that situation, but that's prob what I'd do

I was under the impression that April 15th is the decision date and programs are not allowed to push you for a decision until that date. I'd be a little miffed if a program said I had to decide 2 weeks before the official deadline.
I think it depends on the program and that 4/15 is for clinical and possibly counseling too?

My S/o is having a lot of difficulty research-wise, currently. We're not in the same field so I can't help logistically and I'm trying to be as emotionally supportive as possible, but the extreme helplessness I feel while he's frustrated/pissed makes me sad
also Mac OS sierra totally effed up my laptop just spent over an hour on the phone with apple trying to rectify the problem
