So in terms of information, the best (and sometimes only) resource is the websites of the programs. I was thinking about location when applying, and whether I could live in the city as well as if I knew any counselors or students that had attended the program. I applied to UCI, CSUStan, Utah, Texas, Pitt, Mt. Sinai & Case Western - and I hoped to stay in California. Another thing to look out for are the rotations the schools have - whether they start in your first or second year, if you have an elective rotation, or what kind of variable rotations are offered. For me, apart from location, I liked having the option to do a lab rotation - which CSUS and Utah had. And (although this isn't very beneficial to you rn and I'm sorry) people were right when they told me you really get a feel for a program once you visit for your interview, and you'll see if you feel like you're a fit there.
Also, speaking Spanish is definitely a huge plus, but not absolutely a requirement - I'm from Southern California and I don't speak Spanish (but I do speak Armenian).
    & no problem! ask away!!

Hi guys! I just got into a program this year (first-time applicant), and I'm more than happy to help/answer questions as well!! I know that lurking through the forum throughout the whole process was really helpful so I'm eager to help applicants out for the next cycle as much as I can! I interviewed at 4 schools (CSU Stanislaus, Utah, UTexas, Pitt), was accepted to CSUS & Utah and waitlisted to UT and Pitt, and will be attending CSU Stanislaus in the fall! Feel free to message me with anything

Hey everyone! I just wanted to share this Ted talk about genetic counselling with you all. Jacyln provides a great summary of what genetic counsellors do, and also shares some powerful insight into the challenges and rewards of the profession. I think this video is useful to share with anyone who would like to learn more about genetic counselling. I liked it, and I hope you enjoy it as well!

Also, I got an email about part of my CSU-Stan app today, so it seems like they're sending it in to review sometime this week/next week!

@Blizzard I am so, so sorry to hear that. I know it really hurts. It happened to me two years ago. Applied to three places, rejected w/o a single interview.  It sucks.
As Lorelai would say, I think what you really need to do today is wallow.  Definitely what @raindaywoman said about self-care..., do something for yourself that helps you to de-stress and feel valued.  It's hard not to take every rejection personally, but it's such a numbers game... there are so many qualified applicants, but the programs are tiny, and they can't possibly interview every qualified applicant.
When you're ready to think about the future, you should definitely reach out to the program directors (after the admissions cycle is complete) to see if there are any areas of your application that could be strengthened. It sounds like you have excellent advocacy experience as an academic advisor.  Maybe there is another area of your application that could use a little polishing?
As many people have said, lots of GCs have taken multiple admissions cycles to find the right program.  You have a whole year to make yourself into the best possible applicant! Work on any areas of your app that may be weaker than the rest, and get some more shadowing experience in. Next year, apply to a few more programs if you are able to, especially the ones with larger class sizes (Sarah Lawrence, Arcadia).  Every program is looking for something different, so it doesn't hurt to cast your net wide.
Hang in there! We are all sending positive thoughts your way!
