  1. Yeah, I second that. Last year's admissions committee was all people I knew/took classes with/wanted to work with; this year's was a different specialty entirely, even though my work is still within the purview of the department as a whole. Still stings, but I've got other places thankfully.
  2. Sad thing is, I actually know/have met Dwight in passing lol.
  3. Yeah, the stock decision letter sucked. Thanks Dwight, for your 2 sentences of "regret". I think even Berkeley's, curt though it was, was nicer.
  4. Congratulations! I was rejected, which was a bit of a shock, bc I did my undergrad there, am a great fit, and my work is reflective of my training in the department. But just goes to show that you can't count on anything.
  5. Thanks, and congrats again! It's a fantastic department. My online portal hasn't been updated... Anybody else get any news from NU?
  6. Congratulations!! How were you notified? Has your online portal changed?
  7. I actually know a student who got into Harvard last year off a waitlist last minute; he'd accepted an offer at another place and then switched over to Harvard after they notified him that they had space for him. This suggests that they do waitlist students; either they've also notified waitlisted students or will with rejections. Sigh.
  8. Same thing with Harvard; anybody have any ideas? We've only had one confirmed acceptance there.
  9. NYT yesterday: https://mobile.nytimes.com/2017/02/17/nyregion/columbia-grad-school-acceptance-letters.html . Not our program, but Oh, Columbia, at it again...
  10. Chicago has notified it's applicants already; I wouldn't discount being waitlisted, though. I'm in the same boat with regard to Columbia. And UNC is a great place to go- I wouldn't worry about it too much (though this is rich coming from me, freaking out about Harvard etc).
  11. Northwestern should be end of this week or next. I hate to be a pest about Harvard, but did anyone else notice that there was one add to the wiki that has no year/no status? Am I to understand that as a mistake? In which case we'd have only had one Harvard call reported so far... sigh. This wait is driving me insane, nitpicking at the tiniest things for any clue.
  12. Just noticed that someone got a website confirmation from Columbia and phone notifications from Harvard (!!). Congrats!! Any more details/anybody else? My status hasn't changed from "submitted".
  13. This depends on the program, and should be specified in the offer letter. Typically, continued funding means that for the duration of the period that it's offered, if you meet the requirements for it (be it TAing or what), the department is committing to getting you funding. After that point (typically the 5 year mark), you're expected to teach or secure other fellowships- it isn't that the department won't fund you, but that they can't guarantee you TAships necessarily. I know plenty of people who have been in programs much longer than 5 years and have found a way to scrape by while they finish their dissertations. As for summer funding, this is typically offered as a research fellowship in a lump sum that you have to apply for. How much/what opportunities there are depend on the department.
  14. I figured from context that it wasn't DGS, b/c I think DGS at NYU is Paula England, who at last notice I don't think was using he/him pronouns lol. So yeah- prob someone on the admissions committee- I wonder if that means, then, that NYU acceptances have all gone out if the adcom was writing to people with whom they hadn't had prior contact? Chicago did theirs all at once (though it wasn't a personalized email) and UCLA (also a prof from the adcom) I think over 2-3 days maybe. If they're planning on a cohort of 8, they likely accepted 15-20 students. Sigh. No more word on Columbia either, huh? Just those two reported calls?
  15. NYU folks: looks like you guys were all emailed on Saturday by a professor. Was this a professor you'd identified in your statement/ had reached out to, or a member of the admissions committee?
  16. Lol I think I know which professor you're talking about; she's actually really, really nice and helpful, just incredibly busy. If we're thinking about the same person, every time I've emailed her I've gotten a nice response, but I made sure that it was a directed email asking a specific thing.
  17. If somebody wants to help out with an idea of how many they typically admit for a cohort size of ~15, we could maybe figure this out. My UCLA visit days email invite had 31 prospectives as recipients. At Chicago I think they admitted ~28 or so, expecting about half of them to matriculate.
  18. Yes- either you apply for summer funding to do a project etc, or you save up from your 9 mo stipend. But unless you have something active going on, you can typically be anywhere and aren't required to be on campus. Congratulations! Any more details about this? I'm wondering if other calls are trickling out as well.
  19. Spoke to a student at Harvard just today- he said he's not positive, but he's thinking sometime this week. Northwestern seems like the only one that waits until they get the final go-ahead from the dean before notifying, so that could be something like 2 weeks from now.
  20. I'm all over the board, doing qual stuff in Urban, Gender/Sexuality, and Culture primarily.
  21. My UCLA decision was followed up with a personal email from the member of the adcom who recommended me for admission, telling me why he's excited about my work and ccing professors I should work with (both of whom are FANTASTIC), based on identified interests in my SOP. So I'd assume these might be one by one, given the level of attention I got.
  22. That would be me! First acceptance after Berkeley rejection. So pumped!! I've heard positive things from Chicago and know they met earlier this week to finalize their list and will hear shortly, but no news yet. Still waiting on them, and then crickets from Harvard, Michigan, NYU, Columbia, and Northwestern.
