  1. E/VG

    VG/F

    VG/VG

Now I'm just confused. You got the award, right? I think I saw your name on the list. I thought it was because I didn't get two e's from different people, but clearly that wasn't it. I got e/e vg/g. Totally random.

  2. ^^^ why are you black too? I don't see how race can be deemed 'interesting'. This person clearly wasn't good according to his rankings. But they gave him a bye because he was black. Yeah, life ain't fair, but that's total bullshit.

  3. Anyway, I got my rating sheets back, and they were:

    G/VG

    G/G

    G/VG

And I won with that! Don't ever let anyone tell you that being an African-American isn't awesome, even if you're only 1/8. It is, and this proves it!

People like you make me sick. You totally used the black card to get ahead. I got e/e, and vg/g and received shit.

  4. mathematics. got nothing with vg/g and e/e

i hate nsf and the people on these panels. they are so inconsistent in what they say they are looking for.

  5. It's quite shocking how some people are quite willing to abandon or ignore easily understood and agreed-to rules to suit themselves when they believe the circumstances create a more advantageous situation for them. Ignoring, of course, that most other people in this process try and abide by the rules we agreed to when we started this journey back in 2008.

Perhaps "shocking" isn't the appropriate word - disgusting more aptly sums it up.

Agreed. This person clearly already knows what he/she wants to do and is simply seeking affirmation from equally amoral people.

Burning bridges and being "unethical" is bad, yes...but cheating yourself out of proper options because of programs' selfish and equally unethical deadlines is worse. I say, if they don't explicitly tell you not to, take the offer and see. That is what I will be doing, as I was left with no choice but that.

    They'll live.

This person knew what he was getting himself into. Oxford works on a very different timescale--as do most UK universities. There is nothing selfish or unethical about these programs abroad.

However, what this person is set on doing is very much selfish and unethical. Period.

  6. With the Clarendon competition over, your sources of funding are even more severely limited as an overseas student. A College may have a special studentship/scholarship which you can apply for (if the deadlines have yet to pass!), but you should not be expecting for them to throw money at you. It doesn't work like that. If this is a one year course, you may want to start thinking about whether it's a good idea to bite the bullet and self-fund.

Also, at Cambridge I believe you're assigned a college after you accept an offer from the university...but don't hold me to that...I forget exactly how it all went down. Either way, good luck!

Hasn't been that long has it? ;-) Once the offer has been made.

  7. wow; just, wow. now, surely that's "racist"!

I was offered a job at $75,000 with a bachelors. The average salary of my field PhD is around 6 figures, so yes, i do expect that. I also expect people who don't read posts to not bother replying. How disrespecful is that? The whole point you were trying to make is exactly what I was saying. If you have low income don't take a huge debt out. That's exactly correct. But you government types found the need to say I would need to make $242,000 to pay back my debt, which is just stupid and wrong. I can't fathom how you got a degree with your attitude and lack of reading comprehension.

    Uh. yeah, you're a moron.

Speaking of being inept and disrespectful, I am glad you think that $72,000 salary (what I will be left with after I pay student loans, which are too high to pay back WITH INTEREST!!! RUN AWAY!) for a 26 year old single person isn't THAT bad to live off of. I know, it'll be a struggle, especially since it's about $30k higher than your salary. But yeah, I'm stupid for taking out loans.

Please refrain from posting if you're too arrogant to read something that proves you're being stupid.

*edit: DefinitelyMaybe will be the person who buys a house for $200,000 and goes under due to mortgage and upkeep costs. Marry rich, or never own a home.

  8. You aren't really being free with the details, but surely a (funded!) Ivy master's will be better. You can always apply to the DPhil next year along with other schools in the US. But, hey, it's a personal choice.

  9. It seems to me that you want to do the MSc because you think you can get a funded DPhil place after. If so, that's the wrong way to go about it. Remember, funding is never a guarantee. Unless your department offers studentships which would cover ALL your expenses as an overseas student, will you be any better off in a year's time than you are right now as an MSc applicant?

  10. So what you seem to be saying is that vannik's calculations based on the $100K salary are wrong. And yet, you haven't refuted his (or her) math. Just because loan agencies recommend something does not make it necessary, which I believe is what vannik has been trying to show by showing how the payments would affect the take-home pay of someone NOT making $242K/year.

Ugh, why do I even bother. My fuckin' taxes are bailing out people like you and vannik who believe in whatever they want to believe.

  11. P.S. Watch your language, math123 (and everyone else). No more borderline racist remarks and no insults.

I'm insulted. I wasn't even involved in the (reasonable) critique of his/her English ability. How dare you use my name and "racist" in the same line.

  12. I would also like to add that the apparent blase attitude toward loan burden is highly problematic. We are in this mess today partly due to people who don't understand not biting off more than you can chew. Do whatever you want, but don't expect to be bailed out.

  13. I beg your pardon, but we aren't pulling these numbers out of our asses--as you seem to be doing. Loan agencies recommend having a 200k salary in order to justify taking out 130k in loans. End of story. If you choose not to head their advice, I hope you have good reason. I don't see how you find that so unreasonable.

  14. If you actually dug into the budget deeper, you can see consistent percentage to GRFP, undergrad REU, and other educational programs based on previous budgets. I might try to break this down if I feel like it later. It is speculation, but it is backed by hard numbers. Not just hearsay. What do you still doing on this thread anyways? We'll commiserate with you next week.

I'm bored. I should be studying, but I find this far more interesting. Plus, until I read the reviews, this chapter in my life is not officially closed. So bare with me until then if I feel so moved to contribute to this forum.

  15. blah, I don't think this rampant speculation is healthy. NSF has many, many educational programs, not just GRFP. If you take a look at the stimulus bill governing the 3b the NSF was to get, many of these programs saw huge increases, but sadly not GRFP. Point is, just because NSF got more money than they requested doesn't mean GRFP saw any of that.

  16. Anyway- this conversation isn't benefitting anyone else at this point so let's just call it a truce.

agreed. I do wish you the best of luck, but I had to stand up for some of the rejectees.

    Sorry, "she".

  17. again, I don't want it to appear as if i'm whining, but to say stuff like that is just utterly disrespectful. you are suggesting that people who were rejected wrote crap proposals. Firstly, you are only as strong as your competition. My proposal wasn't compared to yours, so you can't say yours was better than mine or the next bloke that got rejected. Since two people essentially determine your fate, you should be arguing you got lucky with your "respectable proposal" more than anything.

  18. I'm also bothered to see that my school isn't represented at all (in baccaleaureate or graduate institutions) on the current offered list. Last year there were 10ish people, this year none? I'm hoping to be one that is on the list, but I'm still a little curious about it (especially compared to the "big-name" schools that may be bigger but not necessarily better).

the NSF does do geographical fudging on a good portion of the awards. is your school frequently populated by those who stay close to home? I know it's common for non-big-name universities.

  19. Math123:

I'm a very sorry you didn't get the award but please dont stay on the forum and tell other people still waiting that they're not going to get it either- believe me I'm aware of how slim the chances are... I don't need you to remind me. I know there are people who only applied for the prestige but for me this award will be the difference between staying in a lab and fufilling a lifelong dream vs. going into whatever lab has money to take me. So again, I'm sorry you didn't get the award but there's no need fo you to come in here and remind the rest of us how little chance we have of getting it becasue I gaurantee you, not one of us is sitting here thinking "oh, it's in the bag. Limbo = victory"

sorry to be mean... but this is a very stressful time for me. I just think there'll be plenty of time to deal with rejection once the letter comes, I'm not in any hurry to be crushed.

With all due respect, my saying whatever won't change reality. This is a public forum. If you can't deal with the stress of hearing what you don't want to hear, go crawl underneath a rock for the next week until all this is (hopefully) settled.
