Fall 2017 Acceptances/Interviews/Rejections Thread
Aucitronvert replied to csot's topic in Sociology Forum
Okie doke, last time I'll whine about Boston University on this forum! Some people have been accepted (one? almost two weeks ago?), some have been rejected, and some have been waitlisted-- I have heard nothing, and am assuming I'll be rejected, but it's my last realistic shot/app this season so I just want to move on now. I e-mailed the department administrator this morning and she replied promptly to say that I "should receive a decision in the next week or so." Hopefully that is helpful if there are other people waiting on BU... I'm at Portland State and they are making decisions soon, for anyone who is curious. -

Oh my gosh. Three rejections posted from Boston U and I've heard nothing, I keep checking my spam folder and all that lies there are Russian women and empty promises. -

They said that they don't rank the waitlist at all for the first go. They return to the waitlist once someone has declined an offer and rank it then, which tells me that no one has turned down the acceptance yet (why would they, it's too early for acceptance season to be over! You're probably right about mid-March). He also said that they try to determine who is the best fit with research interests and faculty, which is vague but I understand there's probably a lot of nuance to these decisions. -

Thank you!! I ran out of up votes but appreciate it! Funnily enough I just got an e-mail back from my waitlisters and they are SO nice that it makes me want to go there just based on kindness, lol. There's no number ranking so we'll never know what's gonna happen! -

I looked into them a tiny bit but I will admit that I didn't give myself enough time to seriously consider enough schools! No one stood out to me there iirc, but now I know next year that I should be casting a wider net for sure. I was very fixated on embodiment/identity gender this year. Thank you, I'll look at them much more carefully this time! I just emailed the folks who waitlisted me last night after reading some good advice on grad cafe to ask how they rank the list/where I'm on it! You're right, it may work out -
At a university, private research firm, state, county or city level research and data analyst positions. The VA used to hire a lot of researchers in my city but under our new administration that will likely diminish this year. My friend that I mentioned worked at a research firm at our undergrad institution after graduating. I tried to do the same at the social work department but didn't get in (I think they only hired, you guessed it, social workers). I worked at DHS administering food stamps for my year off and was able to emphasize the need for research and policy centered around poverty and marginalized populations based on that 'non-Soc' job.

Fall 2017 Acceptances/Interviews/Rejections Thread

I felt decent about the match but I felt much stronger about my matches with Boulder and was rejected from there, so I feel your pain! I only applied to four schools this year (well, 5 counting my current institution as a safety school) because I had such a hard time matching with potential chairs... everyone in gender seems to study family or organizations which I do neither of so... but I was so absorbed in applying to Boulder that I can't even remember who all I requested to work with at Boston, Michigan and South Carolina... but I know that every program I applied to I was really excited about. I do not envy you. I hope you hear from your other schools very soon! Now that I've been rejected from my top choice and waitlisted at my second (eh, second but more like wild card) choice, my anxiety about acceptances has turned into anxiety waiting for the inevitable rejections so that I can move on with my life and plan the next year and a half since I may not be packing up my apartment, partner, and cat and moving away from home for the first time! It'd be a very pleasant surprise at this point if I were accepted from Boston or Michigan... Michigan is NOT happening though, lol. -
I did not have any competitive research experience as an undergrad and am really glad I went with my MA first. Now, even if I get rejected this application year for PhD, I can try to teach/adjunct or get research gigs in my time off which will even further qualify me. I mean, yeah, I'm broke, but I got funded for my MA and am not much worse off financially than when I left undergrad. Now that I've almost got my master's and plans to publish two articles with my advisor, as well as developed research interests, I know I'm a much better candidate for all of my PhD applications. On the flip side of that, I had a friend in undergrad who also attended my mediocre undergrad institution yet had a very prosperous research CV (McNair, published at least one article, held a research job for a year out of undergrad) and she got into the top 50 school I was just rejected from soooo it all depends on so many factors! You said any job you'd work in the next work wouldn't be Soc, but if you could get a research job, that'd speak wonders to you. Also, maybe you'll get an offer for your MA instead of a rejection from a PhD like some places offer (I know U of Oregon does that).

Fall 2017 Acceptances/Interviews/Rejections Thread

I just searched the Soc results (can't type Boston, wtf?) and found the one (?) acceptance from Feb 3 that was added on the 6th. I came to the same conclusion, that early February is too early to hear from them based on previous years, yet I'm telling myself that all of the acceptances have come and gone so that I don't get my hopes up! I don't know about you, but I wasn't a perfect match for my POIs by any means so I wouldn't be hurt about it. -

BU as in Boston U? Anyone know what's going on with Boston University? I just saw someone posted a rejection, and a while back through the results board (NOT searching) I saw some acceptances... but I find that the search terms are really screwy with BU, probably because of all the other Boston schools? I am fully expecting to be rejected from Boston, but I can't help but click refresh on the results board more and more each day. I just want it to be over with! UMich Ann Arbor I am not even checking on, just waiting for my rejection e-mail ? -
Ah, what a nail biter!! Please update us on whether the cookie told the truth!

I feel this!! I was just rejected from my top pick which I felt super confident about because my POI and I met in person previously and she said she wanted to work with me... My first response was a wait list from my other top pick. My last two apps are both out of my league I'm fairly certain so I'm coming to terms with my disappointment and that I will have to apply again next year. I feel like I can just focus on writing my thesis now. Best of luck to you!

I'm assuming this thread may get revived soonish as acceptances start rolling in. I'm an Oregonian who has lived in the Portland area all of my life, and have lived in central city area while attending Portland State for the past 5 years (BA &a finishing MA right now). I'm here for questions.

I saw another user say that Rosewood was a good place to live, which is east. If I visit I'll take some long walks to scope out the potential bike routes too. Thanks so much!

This is all such good info about Columbia! Does anyone bike around campus/downtown that can speak the bike culture (are there cyclists? Do motorists really hate them?) and the cycling infrastructure and roads (someone said hills)? I'm waitlisted for a PhD program there and am very curious about the city since the cost of living is so much cheaper than where I'm at and the culture is much different!

Got my rejection from Boulder yesterday and I was really shocked because I have met my POI and they wanted to work with me buuuut thanks to Grad Cafe I was able to predict I wasn't getting accepted based on their previous years' trends... I just saw a bunch of other people post their rejections from Boulder and I am guessing a ton of people applied this year? Also I am now wondering how common it is to build a solid seeming rapport with a faculty member and then not get accepted-- I won't get my hopes up like that again. South Carolina has never looked so good, I hope I get off the waitlist!
