Hey @wompwompwomp! I saw where you currently live in Boston and I had a couple of questions if you don't mind me asking...? I'm currently trying to decide between BU and the University of Oregon, and while I really want BU to work out I'm not sure I will be able to cover the cost of living in Boston. I have a very generous offer from UO and would probably come out with very little debt if I went there. BU had a great offer but the cost of living is so high. I have a wife and a 14 month old, which makes finding a family friendly place even more difficult. BU's family housing was $1900.00 which is way too high. Are there any other options (family friendly) that would be around 1000.00 either in Boston or outside of Boston? I will have a car so I would be able to commute. I really like the program and the east coast but I'm not sure I'll be able to make it work and I really don't want to have a job while in grad school. Any help would be much appreciated!

No worries! Happy to help. Yes, rent is high in Boston, it suckssss.

I haven't moved into a new place in over 4 years now so I'm not super up to date on current rent (though I know it's always going up like it is everywhere)...but you definitely will NOT find a place for 1000 a month in Boston, unless you're living with room mates/find a communal living situation.

If you can commute, then you can look outside the city for cheaper rent, which you can find (though I'm not sure what would go for 1000, it'd likely be a studio or 1BR), but I wouldn't know which suburb to check out. The good news with living outside the city is that public transport is great (compared to rest of the US) and so you can easily get to commuter rail stations (and in some cases, even subway lines). I'd look into Waltham as one potential suburb where you will find cheaper rent. Quincy is south of Boston, and might be worth checking out as well! Lmk if I can help with any other Boston related questions!

    Thanks for this!

Np! Also, you probably gathered- but I never mentioned- I live in Boston, went to undergrad here at SMFA/Tufts and have been in Boston 7 years. I live in JP and if you move to Boston you should try to find a place in this neighborhood for the reasons I described above! If you do wind up choosing MassArt, or if you have other Boston questions let me know!

Hey everyone, I've been accepted into two programs, MassArt's Film/Video and RISD's Digital + Media program.

I've been swayed by the so-called elitism of RISD but also by the students' ways of doing and their approaches to dense subject matter in the digital world. MassArt just feels good because the departments brand of teaching is something that I resonate with due to it being very similar to one of my favorite professors in undergrad.

MassArt will be roughly $15-20k cheaper per year than RISD, all things considered.

Location and housing is a huge factor too because I have a small dog, and my partner and I will be moving in together. I want to make this transition easier for them as well. I don't know what having a dog in Boston is like vs. having all that green green nature near the RISD and Brown campuses.

We will be splitting the rent and I want it to be easy on my partner, and because of this Providence seems to more appealing due to it's low cost of living, but perhaps there is more money to be made in Boston.

What do y'all think?? I have to let RISD know by the end of the week if I'm in.

If money's note a huge issue for you in terms of tuition, then I'd say definitely go with RISD- definitely a much stronger program, more resources, great facilties access to more interesting visiting artists, and significantly cheaper cost of living- though if at MassArt, even if their visiting artist series is lacking, there are other art schools with public visiting artist lectures that you could catch too.

Significantly cheaper cost of living in Providence, and if your partner absolutely has to, they can commute to Boston for work (its just a 45 minute train ride). I really don't feel like MassArt has anything that RISD doesn't, except the mission of the school is great in that it is a public art school and is more accessible than RISD, financially and otherwise (MassArt has as great Center for Arts and Community Partnerships which brings art to local communities around Boston).

If you're worried about being near green nature, Boston definitely has a ton of that- if not right in your neighborhood, you can take the T or commuter rail to several hiking spots. If you live in JP in Boston, you're super close to Jamaica Pond (and the Jamaica Way section of the Emerald Necklace, a chain of parks surrounding the city) for rowboating, sailing, and jogging, running (or picnicking, etc.). You're also close to the Arnold Arboretum which is great for hiking and running and biking. Several campgrounds are within 20 miles of the city as well. Not sure what having a dog in Boston is like, not many places let you bring a dog to a cafe for example, even if its outdoor seating. I don't think there should be issue with finding apartments with landlords who accept pets, you might just have to pay a small fee upfront, but again, not totally sure.

Mustered up the courage to email Tyler this morning to ask what's going on, and finally got some official word that I'm on the waitlist. apparently they will "have decisions made by the beginning of next week at latest."  ?

So strange, I was just on the phone with graduate admissions at Tyler asking about the status of my app today, and they told me I'd hear by April 1st. They said no rejections had gone out yet, that some acceptances had, but that applications were still being reviewed, and when I asked about a wait lsit they said they didn't know about one. What the heck?!

  5. Just got word I'm on the waitlist for the RISD MFA Painting program. Still feels good to have made it this far, and there's the chance I'll still get in, but I won't know if spots open up until mid-late April.

Just goes to show the random-ness/unpredictability of this whole process. I applied to 7 schools- so far, I only got into one, but a respected program- BU- with a full scholarship. So you might think from that, that I'd also get into any other nice program I applied to, right?

But Hunter and Rutgers flat out rejected me (Hunter, for the third time). Then RISD interviewed me ( this was the first time I applied) , and now I'm on their waitlist, with a decent chance at still getting in. And I'm on Tyler's waitlist from what I've deduced from folks posting on this forum.

So yes,  this whole process is super random and weird.... and I am so glad it is winding down!

  6. Interesting with the info on Tyler's process. If rejections already went out, I guess that means I'm on their "waitlist" (though who knows how far down!). I'm not holding my breath, but it'd be amazing if it did come through- though having a full ride offered at BU is pretty hard to pass up.

I interviewed at RISD last week for painting. Anyone get acceptances yet? They said I'd hear over the next month, so I know it's probably already early to ask, but can't wait to hear.

  7. Has anyone heard from Tyler for painting? I have not heard a peep, so I'm assuming I did not get in.

My RISD interview went great, should hear back in the next week- but I got into BU"S MFA in Painting with a full scholarship! So excited. Not sure if a better offer is possible at this point, so despite still having multiple schools to hear back from still, I think my decision is likely already made.

@MariaTheGreat, happy to answer further questions about Boston, as I currently live here and have since 2010. I have a love-hate relationship with Boston, but I wouldnt have been here for as long as I have been if I didnt like it. :)

  8. so I've known I was rejected from Hunter for a week or two now, since I knew all interview invites had gone out.

but I got my first official notice of rejection yesterday...but not from someone in the art/painting dept....it was someone from their masters of teaching program, which I thought was really odd. not only that, but they were encouraging me/offering that I could transfer my application, free of charge, to be considered for that program instead- what?!

then I get a rejection again today,  this time from the graduate art department- with a very blunt subject line " Application declined for Hunter MFA 2017-2018 admissions " folllowed by an email with several typos.

kind of disappointing, after all the effort I put into my app, you'd think they'd do a better job at communicating. ..

(sorry for the non-story, just figured this forum was a better place for me to vent than directly to the admissions peeps.. lol)

hey, welcome to the anxiety club! lol

how do you know Hunter started sending rejections this morning? I'm very anxious about hearing from them! and didn't get any news from them yet. Hope it is a good sign like you say.

    good luck with your interviews!

I thought I read on a previous page that folks said they'd received a rejection from Hunter this morning. Maybe I misread? I'll try to find... it was only a page or two back I think

  10. Omg just jumping in here. Reading through all of this has my heart pounding haha.

I'm waiting to hear back from Hunter's MFA Painting program, and see that interview requests are going out today- and that some received rejections this morning. I did not receive a rejection, so does that mean I maybe will get an interview? Eek can't stop staring at my inbox.

Anyone know when RISD Painting interview requests will go out?

I also applied to Rutgers (got rejected last week), BU (interview on 2/27), Tyler (no interviews this year apparently?), Brooklyn College (no interviews), and GSU (phone interviews, waiting for invite).

    All this waiting sucks! haha
