  1. U Wisconsin Madison has a really strong printmaking program. I visited UW last year and they seemed like they had great faculty, sense of community, and facilities. I definitely recommend you check it out.

  2. Heard from mica, rejected from both hoffberger and mt royal. Also heard from Cca: rejected. But I also heard from Pratt: a very short letter saying I'm on the waitlist. Hmmm I wonder if that means anything...after mg experience being on a waitlist last year, I'm trying to tell myself not to anticipate anything.

In any case, I'm about to leave for my flight outta Boston to Oakland to check out mills; excited to see what it's like!

  3. SAME HERE! I applied for painting, so it might be different, but i haven't heard a peep from Pratt or CCA...have been trying to just assume it's bad news, so that it doesnt drive me nuts.

    Hey readers,

So. Maybe i'm being impatient but it's almost the end of March and I still haven't heard anything from Pratt, CCA and USC. Well, USC is ok I think because from the other forum I should be hearing from them this week or next week. I am living in France so it'll take some time.

But for the others, Is anyone else in the same boat as me?!!! No news? from CCA or Pratt? it worries me a bit. Plus I have an acceptance deadline coming up...

  4. Dude, where is my junk mailbox? I don;t think i have one. Would i have one if my email is on gmail? Feeling a little techno stupid...

Also, does anyone know if pratt interviews ALL their candidates? That was pretty much the only other possibility left for me, but maybe not anymore...For some reason I thought Pratt didnt interview

Aghh, you're freakin' me out man. I just searched my junk mailbox.. nothing. Did the interview request come today? And congratulations!

  5. That's awesome!

So do you mean you got full tuition remission or you got full tuition remission plus 25k stipend?

    which uc?

Got an email from a UC Today telling me I got a scholarship for 25K in the first year over the full tuition remission...pretty sweet.

  6. My mentor told me to know any variation of this question inside and out and be prepared to elaborate in depth:

How does your work fit in with the contemporary art world/scene?

yeah, it is definitely one of the hardest questions to answer because of the unclear definition of 'contemporary art.'

(well, might be a good thing that it is unclear, in terms of answering the question)

    anyways, thanks for the info!

Oh I know right!?haha I spent about 3 days going...??blink.gif?? about it and had to just start writting down randomness until I got a few justifyable concrete concepts. Now whether I'll remember any of it.....ya.

    .

Ok, I’m really glad you guys are bringing this up, because this question always stumps me and I am too stupid to prepare some gist of an answer to it—I think every time I have answered it, it’s been a different answer (depends on my mood, what I’ve been looking at lately, etc).

Also, the question of Where does your work fit into the scheme of painting (its history & contemporary relevance)? Which is a bit less intimidating because its less general, but still, it is SO loaded…

It also relates to the question, “what are you doing in your work that makes it NEW? What makes it contemporary?” (this is a toughie esp. when it’s coming from someone who’s prodding you with the whole “painting is dead” challenge)…

I mean, I think the question of how we “fit” can discuss the different schools of artmaking that inspire/influence us or that we feel we have similarities to, but there should be more…And for the question of “Why’s it new,” I usually mention a combo of details about my media, subject matter, process, context, blah blah, along with personal opinion about painting’s validity…but I wonder, out of all that, what is the meat that really satisfies the question?

Anyone have any thoughts on these broad, but important, questions? How have you handled it in the past? Interested in how others approach this…

  7. hey, thanks so much for posting these, they're great! good luck with your slade interview!

I got most of the question from the forum here (I forgot who posted them for us), so I'd be repeating same thing.

But here are the questions I gathered. Some of the questions are specifically related to my practice.

Why do you want to go to Slade?

Why do you want to go to grad school? Why now?

How do you think your work will change if you move to thislocation?

What resources of this program will be the biggest benefitto your development as an artist?

    What are your influences?

If your workwas not about this, what would it be?

What for you constitutes a good work of art?

What draws you to a piece of work?

    What motivates your work?

Who are your main influence? (make sure to name some of thedead artists from long ago, title of the work, quotes that artist has made, etc.)

Where do you see yourself in 10 years?

How does your work fit in with the contemporary art world/scene?

How do you fit into contemporary world?

Or describe your work in the context of contemporary artmovements?

What do you think is a good critique of your work/badcritique?

Why/how did you choose the people who wrote letters for you?

How will you contribute to this program?

What do you do for fun?

What artists who are no longer living influence you?

What book are you reading right now? What do you think aboutit? (It helps to remember specific quotes that you find meaningful.)

What are you working on right now?

    Please explainthis work (xxxx03.jpg)

What have you seen that you can’t stand?

What is your favorite piece of art? Why? (Title, artist, year)

Have you done research about Slade, how much do you knowabout Slade’s teaching method?

Can you describe yourself, besides the fine art world, suchas personal habit, etc.

    What is your work about?

What other aspects of culture influence your work besidesart/art history?

How do you see yourself taking advantage of Slade’s enviroment/program?

What exhibition have you been to last year?

What have you done since you’ve graduated?

What contemporary artists are you into, and why?

Tell us about the conceptual underpinnings of your work?

    Talk about your process.

What are your indirect influences? (music, book, etc)

What do you think about Clement Greenberg’s essay onformalism?

How is your work related to Minimalism/ProcessArt/Formalism?

What made youinterested in the 1960s movements in particular?

Do you have anyquestion for us?

  8. May I ask what questions you have come up with? I haven't gotten an interview yet, but I'm really hoping I will, and if/when that happens I was thinking I would try to do the same kind of thing of making a list...Of questions about my work, art historical references, etc., but also even just of questions that are kind of trivial but still find me stumbling to answer them (broad questions like...what do u do in your free time besides paint? i was asked that one last year, and I had a hard time with it because, I mean, where to start? I'm not exactly the best at thinking on-the-spot, especially when i'm nerrrvous)

Just curious about which ones you've come up with.

Maybe this is an odd question, but do interviewers ever ask you where else you've applied?

I've collected/created 40 may-be-asked-questions at admission interview and trying to prepare for the answers, and this just crossed my mind.

I don't know if they ever ask candidates where else they've applied,

but if they ever did, what would be the best answer?

Do you think we can be honest about it?

  9. Got a rejection letter from Slade in the mail today :(

orangetrousers, I also applied to Hoffberger and RISD Painting and have not heard a thing. I think I remember from last year that RISD's interview invites came a little later, but I was emailed an interview invite from Hoffberger on the 16th, so I hope we hear something soon.

  10. How was your phone interview at Penn? Did they say anything about why they wanted an interview? I applied there too, and figured the worst since I wasn't contacted to interview, but I called them yesterday and was told that different people do interviews for different reasons, and that you can still get in without an interview...don't know whether to believe in that, bc it seems like a bunch of ppl on here got interviews, but who knows...

    My schools so far:

U of Penn - Phone interviewed today

Yale - In-person interview for Painting Mar 22 (email status update)

SAIC - In-person (or phone) interview for Fiber Mar 5 or 6 (letter)

SAIC - Admissions today implied I had an interview for Painting but they had a handful of letters stacked up that hadn't gone out. She said they'd try to email everyone soon.

    RISD - No word yet

    VCU - No word yet

    CalArts - No word yet

    Columbia - No word yet

    Hunter - No word yet

Indiana Univ. Bloomington - No word yet

Has anyone applied to Art Center College of Design? Their rolling admissions is odd.
