  1. Ah, slaughtered by Columbia (expected) and Penn (mostly expected) today. Must just repeat to myself, "In at first choice, in at first choice." & that I was rejected from my two worst fits and also the one school that I was somewhat worried to get in and then choose over one I might like better but with less prestige. So it's good! It's all good. But this business does still seem to be random, to a degree. I also agree with benedicte that the Columbia letter was a nice one (though I do have a tendency to only glance at them for a few seconds). Really not a fan of the check the website business, though. Or of Columbia taking so long. But yes, moving along. One last school and I'm done. Just going to call it a rejection because hey, it's a teeny department in a prestigious school and yup, I just wanna call it a day. Maybe they'll surprise me with an honorable mention waitlist. I do hope there's still some good news out there for the rest of you!
  2. Also, congrats Bactrian! Awesome department, awesome school, (perhaps in the minority when I also say this) awesome city.
  3. I am really looking forward to having this process be over! Would like the final word, or rejections: please. Obviously one from Columbia, probably from Penn as no interview, & w/e Harvard (Hist. of Am. Civ). I might shed a little tear if this isn't wrapped up by March 1.
  4. They did not interview, as far as I know.
  5. Yup, check this site out for some bothersome numbers: http://adjunct.chronicle.com/
  6. As everyone here has said on the board many times -- think veryyyy deeply about taking out loans for a PhD program (or just don't do it). It's amazing how quickly those loans grow. Especially 100K+. You are going to spend a substantial part of your life in debt. I am still haunted by a 20K student loan from earlier schooling, so that's why I feel the need to warn (even though I'm sure you know this already). My thesis was on a rather morbid topic; whenever I'd bring it up, no one batted an eyelash
  7. I didn't contact any POIs. Don't worry about it, especially if you've already applied!
  8. Congrats to the CUNY, Rutgers, and Cornell folk (and probably missing some!) Bet you all are having a lovely weekend (deserved!)
  9. YES! Congrats. And also regretting not actually betting on it.
  10. Yay!!! Who cares that I'm at a bar checking grad cafe? I told you !! DID YOU GET INO CORNELL?? Or Harvard dear god?? Congrats and now we can all yell at you!
  11. Yeah, let's just get this over with already, Columbia.
  12. I always like the results comments along the lines of, "I really am SHOCKED that I did not get in" for somewhere like Yale or Harvard. I would love to have that sort of confidence in myself and my abilities
  13. Pretty certain they are done accepting; they sent out an email to the admits (not blind copied) to make arrangements for visiting days. But do not know how they do wait lists etc.
  14. Czezc, I can't bet any money as the student debt is piled too high, but I'm tooootally calling that you get into Cornell.
  15. Granted, I've actually never been to Chicago before, but isn't Hyde Park supposed to be nice?
  16. Why would you tell them if they don't ask? It might come up during visiting to which you should probably be honest. But I have a feeling most won't ask. I think places know you are musing over choices -- or at least waiting for more results. I think a 'thank you, I'm honored' is merited if a specific POI reaches out to you, but otherwise you don't have to be involved in long discussions (...unless you want to be. Asking questions is for the best).
  17. From the department, but slightly personalized, so they're likely working through them this afternoon.
  18. Chicago's doing their thing today. Just got an e-mail from the department.
  19. I wouldn't primarily identify as an environmental historian, but I do incorporate urban environmental history into my work. So perhaps Princeton can now have 1.25 female environmental historians.
  20. Definitely considering all this! And it's great advice. Princeton does offer subsidized housing though, although Baltimore would of course give me more options on where to live. If I go to Princeton, I'd probably eventually move to Philadelphia (which has roughly a cost of living similar to Baltimore), but hopefully I'll be able to pose the "living in another city" question to some grad students during my campus visit. And to throw out some personal details -- I share housing costs with my partner and he'd be able to make a lot more in his line of work in the NYC Metro region than in Baltimore (though there is DC). Just a lot to think about.
  21. I have to admit I am pretty much decided too. But I do want to do campus visits and still weigh my choices. But as I'm in my late twenties, I am inclined towards the higher stipend. Okay, this can still be a perfectly good reason to choose one over another at any age, but it's probably more a factor now than I would have admitted when I was younger. Stability is nice.
  22. Yes, this. My boyfriend made me read my over-the-top series of texts I sent him yesterday, that ran from wildly pessimistic to unreasonably optimistic. It's a far too emotional business, even if we know rationally we shouldn't get so worked up. I'll try to keep it cool and it's not my intention to rub anything in anyone's face. It's a weird, weird month.
  23. Don't worry -- NYC is ridiculously, painfully expensive ! (THAT said, if anyone wants any advice on the city, including living in it on a very small budget, don't hesitate to message me). And I have heard wonderful, wonderful things about living in Amherst! Congrats!!
  24. I know -- not trying to give you false hope here specifically for today's schools (I'm aware I am out at Columbia), just pointing out Penn's style, which a few other schools seem to do too. Just saying silence isn't damning across the board. It's still awful though, certainly.
  25. Mine said incomplete for a while ... Now complete 1/26. I think it's just admissions checking off your app materials. By the way last year UPenn accepted in waves, even interviewed and accepted people weeks after a wave of rejections. They are the perfect example of it not being over till it's over.
