Masters Before a PhD in International Relations?
mlerette replied to iamdanthemanstan's topic in Applications
I'm a Fletcher MALD. Here is how I have been told it works by the PhD students. If you obtain an MA, you can apply that toward your PhD. At Fletcher that is the MALD plus 3 years. If you go straight to the PhD, it will take 5 years. You don't have to do the MA but it doesn't hurt. -
For those worried about loans, I advise looking at the the career services at the schools you are accepted into. It was something I overlooked prior to accepting my school offers. Some schools take great pride in their ability to place graduates into careers and others tend to believe their name on your resume will get you where you want to be. I was lucky to find a great school with amazing career services. Additionally, it has been my experience that scholarship opportunities are more readily available for second year grad students. (insert government agency here) will pay the tuition costs for the students second year in return for X-years of service upon graduation. I am funding my own education and watching my back account shrink while the student loans pile up stinks. However, I enjoy my program more than I miss my savings. My humble advice is to go where you will be happy and let the cards fall where they will. 2-years of suck to save 40K is likely not worth it.

Harris is out for me. Since funding wasn't an issue, I chose to attend another school based on program and weather. Chicago weather is terrible.
-
U Chicago's inability to send decisions has allowed me ample time to look into other programs and choose another. I had my heart set on Harris becuase it was my logical "best" choice and the location fit perfectly with my future plans. However, since this terrible decision process, I have already accepted an admission at another institution. I feel the $70 fee for Harris was a learning experience and just because something has a good name does not mean it will live up to it. Sadly, there are many in this forum who seem to feel the sam to include the UCLA aceptee who may have chosen, like others, to attend another college instead of waiting for the third forthcoming deadline to be stated and pass. For this reason, 2013 will likely not be a legacy class for Harris. They lost their competitive edge for this MPP year group at this point. Your strawman argument comparing an incompetent diatribe with the posters frustration concerning Harris is no more intelligent than his statement. MCL

While waiting for a Harris decision, I have read the most interesting text. It is titled Rusty Bed Springs and was written by I. P. Freely. Check it out and try to keep a sense of humor.

As we ponder the decisions that will never come, think on this interesting fact: A man who falls asleep with an itchy butt wakes up with stinky fingers.
-
Seriously people. It is all about the fear we will usurp their wind.
-
I have to speculate at this point because I have nothing better to do and cannot sleep. I think this is all a big hoax to buy a couple of more days to complete decisions. I know a number of people who applied and none of us have gotten a decision. Furthermore, there are no accept/reject posts on this forum. After every school I have been accepted or rejected from, there were posts prior and post my notification. Chicanary, trickery, and ledgerdemain I say (forgive my spelling. I refuse to download iespell). I think this is a conspiracy by the people of Chiacgo to stop us from moving to their city and absorbing all their wind. Yes folks, if too many people move to Chicago, they will never get federal funding for wind turbines to create electricity for Wrigley Field. After all, U Chicago is the school that created the Broken Windows theory. Take this theory and apply it to federal funds for wind energy instead of increasing crime rates and I am sure this is all a big ploy. If you see one broken window it leads to more crime. If you see one big turbine it leads to many more turbines which flows right into a green energy revolution which will power the Bulls, Cubs, and Bears to stop being miserable, choking sports teams. I rest my case your honor.

Did Ms. Decarlo state whether the pending accept/reject emails include funding packages?
-
That was a refreshingly nice letter of rejection. Well, I suppose I am happy Georgetown got bumped out of March Madness. What the hell is a Hoya anyway? I am spiteful because I am inadequate. Community college sounds promising.

Got the call this morning at 830. I think this was a test to see who was hung over after St. Patty's day. They mey be rethinking my acceptence after that groggy phone call. More information will supposedly be here next week.
-
Judging by the lack of replies, I must assume Fletcher is not going to win March Madness. I suppose most are concerned with course load, living expenses, and tuition costs. Maybe I can pay for tuition by being a personal trainer. MCL

Looking at attending Fletcher in Fall. I have a fiance and 2 labs all of which need a backyard to romp. I have an all wheel drive vehicle and would like to keep my communte down to 15-20 minutes one way. I will have a $2200 monthly income to spend on all things associated with survival. Specifically, I am looking for a 2 and 2 with a backyard and close enough to get back and forth when the weather turns chilly. Any suggestions on neighborhoods or areas? What is the economy like in Medford? My Fiance will be looking for work. She has an undergrad and worked as a police officer and military intelligence officer in the military briefly. Any suggestions on where to get decent employment or where to begin looking? Anything would be helpful. I'll be running the Boston Marathon in April and will have a couple days to check the place out. Looking forward to meeting Ben Affleck and Marky Mark. I hear those guys are always there! MCL

I looked through the organizations and there seems to be room for a Fletcher Hard Body, Hard Mind club. I think we we could raise money through calendar sales and bare chested car washes. MCL

How is the gym at Fletcher. One cannot neglect the body while nurturing the mind. Is there an annual Hard Body calendar for the Jumbo's? On a serious note, whate are the athletics at Fletcher? Not looking for perfection but if the gym looks like Pumping Iron was filmed there and the equipment has yet to be updated, that would be a real bummer.

Assuming a gentlemen already has a TS/SCI w/ poly, what are the advantages of Korbel over the other loactions? The cost of living and weather is better but do agencies and think tanks actively recruit out of Korbel? Having worked with agencies in the past, most seem to be filled with dunder heads (no offense dunder heads). This is not a path I intend to take upon completion of my degree. That being said, I have been told to stay east coast due to the close proximity to DC, the ability to network, and the active recruitment out of these schools (Fletcher, HKS, Gtown, even as far as Harris). Does Korbel offer similar networks? The only way to become a dunder head is to know a dunder head.

I got the International Admin. acceptence. Who knows what that entails. I am stoked to research the school and what it has to offer. I love to ski on snow instead of ice so the Korbel is looking better every day. Still waiting on other acceptence letters. I have only taken a couple of semesters of French and Spanish so I am a bit leary of the language requirement. I can ask for a bathroom while visiting Rocky Point but I couldn't talk my way out of captivity when I am kidnapped by drug lords. I wish the best to all who apply. There seem to be many more acceptences on the horizon and diversity is a wonderful. MCL

I got accepted to Korbel with the Founders Scholarship for the Fall '11. I am curious about the DC program for second year students. When does one apply for the program? My other question concerns the foreign language requirement. What qualifies as "proficient?" Would it be the equivenent of 2 semester of the language of higher? Is there a written and verbal test? Is there an example of the written test? Can I take foreign language courses through DU while attending the program (would the course work allow for it)? I have taken Spanish and French but wouldn't consider myself "proficient" and will need a couple of semesters to brush up. MCL
