Just joined GC to post- did anyone apply to/ has anyone heard from the McMaster MSc in Health Research Methodology (HRM)? Tried looking for threads but there doesn't seem to be much activity around this program...

Hi! I applied to this program as well. I was informed that the offers will be coming out sometime next week! Coming up pretty quickly... good luck to you!

Congratulations! I hope I get an offer too some day

Do you mind sharing your credentials and if there are any conditions for your offer?

Thank you and I hope you receive some good news soon! The deadline to accept for today’s offers is April 2nd (which is coming up pretty quickly). No other conditions to the offer.

I graduated from uoft last year, so I guess I’m considered a professional (amateur really).

Majors: Human biology and Psychology (cGPA of 3.3; last two years’ GPA ~3.6)

    - 3 years of research experience in invasional ecology (with a manuscript in prep); 2 years of RA experience in social neuroscience

    - completed 2 independent research projects during my undergrad (in two different disciplines relevant to my degree)

    - collaborating on a meta analysis relevant to clinical psych.

    - currently employed as a project manager/RA for a clinical Epidemiology department at a hospital. My focus with this role is collaborating on a systematic review on healthcare in underserved populations. This is a significant bit of experience for me as it is my only direct experience in epi research.

    - various other research related employment, volunteer clinical experience (hospital, on-campus emergency response group)

    - personally, I think my favourite element of my app was my letter of intent. I really tried to connect my experiences as it pertains to public health and had very specific goals within the program. I’m a second time applicant (waitlisted last year) so I made sure that I showed some evolution from then to now.

    - i did terrible on the GRE’s quant component. Did well on the other sections and got As for all of my statistic courses in undergrad. I really do think they place an emphasis on experience and the letter.

    - Also i have known my referring professors (both of them were my supervisors for my honours thesis and I was employed with them as well) for 3+ years.

Good luck to you — fingers crossed!

    Hi

hoping someone may be in the same boat or has a similar experience

i received an invitation to a telephone interview from U of T epidemiology

im unsure if this common practice or what to expect. They’ve stated the purpose of the interview is to “make sure program is good fit for you”

    Any thoughts or advice?

I’ve never heard of anyone actually having a phone interview from the 2017 cycle. But they do state this on their Epi application process page.

Normally, telephone interviews are shorter than face-to-face/Skype interviews. They likely think you’re a qualified applicant, and found something from your application that needs some probing. Maybe go through your CV/letter of intent and be very clear on your expectations and aspirations within the program and from epi ad a field. Good luck!

Ahh I see! Yeah, Epi at UofT is the only program I've applied to... so see how that goes! I might apply to another program later on, but the application is due in June, so I'll probably wait to see if I've gotten into Epidemiology first! I seems like a pretty neat program and interests me since I like the math and analytical side to it!

But oh yes, I've heard is a pretty tough program to get into with them accepting about 1 in 8 people, as I've heard! If you don't mind me asking, is there anything you did to improve your application from last year? I'm keeping my options open to see how I can become a stronger candidate if I don't get in this year. Looking into getting some more public health experience, since I lack relevant experience.

Oh the GRE! I decided quite late that I was going to write it, so only ended up having like 3-4 days to study for it! I was more worried about Verbal Reasoning, but I ended up doing worse in Quant than I expected- which was a bummer!

Ahh well, we just have to wait a couple months now- not a fan of this waiting game!

Yeah the candidate net that they attract has become more and more expansive over the years... just like anything I guess. Is it the IMS program that you are looking into?

I didn’t have any direct public health experience when I applied last year. But I’m not a top notch academic... so take this with a grain of salt. This year, I’m hoping that my clinical epi experience gets me a second look. Unless they like you and decide to give you an offer from their first round (around end of April from last year), we will be waiting for quite the while! Good luck!

Neat! I wasn't hearing many people applying to UofT for Epi so just wanted to send a general question out!

Oh cool! I didn't realize UofA also had an Epi program! Do you have a particular preference?

I would definitely prefer attending uoft because I’m from Toronto and I think they offer a great range of collaborative options to integrate into your program. I actually applied to this program last year, and was waitlisted and ended up with a rejection. This year... the GRE is definitely an obstacle for me... I didn’t do well on quant. Hoping for the best!

But UAlberta has a very good MPH program as well. They were the first MPH program in Canada to become accredited. But I think their specialization option in epidemiology is not that well known? They offer an MSc as well!

  6. Congrats to everyone on their offer today from McGill!

I applied for McGill's MSc in Epidemiology. When was the application deadline for the MScPH program? Just trying to figure out if early offers are possible for epi as well.

I gave them a call this morning. I've been waitlisted, but it seems rather unlikely that I could get in. :/ Good thing I accepted my other offer!

Did they make it seem like the chances are quite slim to make it out of the waitlist? Did they make any other comments about the waitlist itself or if they are planning to contact any others? And sorry, last question: did you receive any notification prior to your call from DLSPH's (Epi)?

Just got a rejection letter from MPH Epi Uoft. Now only waiting for MSc Epi at Western. But instead of feeling disappointed all I feel is relieved that the application season is almost done.  Now its time to buckle up and work on my application for next year. All the best to those who are still waiting.

I love that you're so ready to moving forward! I'm still waiting to hear back from UofT. Was it an official letter that was mailed to your home address, or was it an email?

Will be declining my admission to Queen's public health

Congrats!! Are you a current UofT student? If you are, was this offer one of the emails that were queued since the outage last Friday?

Just wanted to add that I got a recommendation for admission into UofT Epidemiology on Friday!  (This was right before the UTMail outage for UofT students)

I'm actually so excited and surprised that I was accepted.   I was only able to apply to 2 MPHs due to circumstances at the time and since I was already rejected from McMaster I didn't have much hope left for UofT.  Miracles do happen. :)

    Good luck to the rest!

Congrats to you!!! I similarly got rejected from Mac! Hoping for the same miracle :) You're from uoft?

@blind_faith if you don't mind me asking, UofT email address? What are you talking about?

I'm trying to find out if any students who just graduated from uoft received an email directly to their uoft student email address  about an offer before the scheduled outage for the uoft mail server for all students and alumni. It seems that a couple of offers were sent right before the outage at 6pm yesterday (server will resume back in service at 6pm on may 1st). I'm sure this doesn't affect DLSPH's selection schedule. Congrats to all who got an offer :)

  12. anyone from UofT here who got an unofficial offer for UofT's MPH Epidemiology? Our uoft email addresses are currently going through an outage and I guess they sent out some offers right before?
