  1. I would say that while reputation matters - and I agree that UCL and the Courtauld both carry more weight than UCSD in terms of international reputation - what really matters is where you can do what you want to do and where you can get the money to do it. In other words, in the long run what really matters is what you accomplish NOT where you go. I did my MA in London. While it got me into the PhD program I'll be starting in the fall (leaning towards Berkeley), one of the reasons I didn't even apply to UK PhD programs is because of the funding and because they are only 3 years. In my mind, both of these factors were going to limit what I would potentially be able to accomplished.
  2. Does anyone know anything about Michigan's decisions? I emailed the DGS but didn't get a response.
  3. I'm interested to learn about the acceptance at Berkeley. Would you mind sharing your field and/or the faculty you proposed to work with? Funding information would also be interesting . . . if you're willing.
  4. Is anyone STILL waiting to hear from Berkeley or Delaware? Isn't the 15th the date by which most schools require students to accept offers? I've contacted both departments within the past two weeks and they indicated that I would hear soon but it seems really late now!?!?
  5. My two cents on the faculty would be: Miller is very easy to know and very helpful, DeRoo was stressed out all the time and scared all my friends away, Wallace loves talking about fig leafs and penises and tended to meander in class, Rotroff is a nerd's nerd and Klein and Childs are married and are both giants. Eckmann is very serious but available and Koepnick is a great lecturer. Miller and Koepnick were my favorites but I'm also a modernist so I'm biased. I loved St. Louis as it's easy to know and big enough to stay interesting. WashU has tons of money and the Pulitzer and St. Louis Art Museum aren't to be scoffed at. I would go back in a heart beat but my interests don't align with the faculty.
  6. Is anyone still waiting on Delaware?
  7. I know lots of people who went to the Courtauld as I lived in London for over two years and did my MA in the UK. It's no surprise to me that you weren't given any funding, even if you are a top student. International students pay the highest tuition and help keep the school/system afloat. By going there you would basically be subsidizing all of your British peers. The school has a top reputation all around the world and that should be the least of your worries. I would think more about the fit. It's MA courses are very specialized and if you don't want to write your PhD on the exact topic of your MA course you might reconsider. You should also research the professor and try to gauge their accessibility to MA students. Many professors who teach there can't be assed! While specialized knowledge shows maturity and is desirable for specialists, it also limits your perceived potential. My understanding is that many US PhD programs look to mold their students into little "mini thems." And you won't appear very "moldable" with an MA from the Courtauld.
  8. Last Thursday (3/11) I got an email from the department secretary about my CA residence. A prof had asked her to ask me to confirm it. In my reply I asked her about when decisions would be made. She said the department was still considering applications and "hoped" to be finished within 10 days. So . . . I'm expecting to hear any day now. Based on what I've read on the forum about Berkeley this year, I imagine their budget issues are slowing everything down.
