Sorry to hijack this thread, but one of you is claiming an acceptance from Indiana and the other one from NYU - are these for English PhD? There's nothing on the results search for NYU English for 2009 and only one Indiana acceptance from 2/6 that I thought someone else I was talking to here has claimed. So I'm confused.
-
I received my rejection letter via postal mail today.
-
bowdoinstudent, did you receive a call saying you were being nominated for a fellowship? OSU shouldn't be sending out acceptances for anyone yet unless they're being nominated for a fellowship.

I know they really want to promote the Interdisciplinary Disability Studies program since it's newer, so hopefully your interest in it will work in your favor! Our dept. put a lot of emphasis on encouraging people to learn more about disability studies because we had so many great people working in that area, so a lot of people took classes with faculty like Brenda Brueggeman, etc. I know a couple people who entered the dept. working on other areas but have moved to disability studies because they had such good classes with people like Brenda. I don't know anything at all about the History dept., but I can answer questions about Columbus if you have any. I wish you the very best of luck!

Riss, are you applying in English? If so, I notice you applied to Ohio State - they have some real strengths in Disability Studies, which I noticed in the little thing next your name. If you have any questions about the program, I got my MA from there last June, and I'd be glad to help. Good luck!

Congrats to you both! I didn't apply to U Chicago, so I say that with the utmost sincerity
-
Liz - no, more details are always good. Thanks for the reply!
-
Liz - Those dates are super early for those programs - did they say anything about your circumstances being unique? Neither program notified until the second half of February last year. Another question: this is for the PhD and not the MA? I'm really trying to make sense of these dates.
-
Liz, you were accepted to UIUC and UMN for English? When was this and how did they notify (by email, phone, mail)? I haven't seen any other news from these schools
-
Congrats on the UIUC acceptance! Just to verify - it came via the postal service? They notified via email last year, so I'm wondering if things changed?

Just got an email today saying I was in off the wait list for the English MA program and I will definitely be accepting the offer. I'll be focusing on postcolonial/Indian diasporic lit. Anyone want to chat about apartment hunting and other such exciting topics?

I think I've been private messaging everyone here who would actually care, but I'm so excited that I'm going to post anyway: I've been offered a spot at OSU! I'm so excited. I tried to get excited about Kent this weekend by seeing what courses I would take in the fall, and nothing on the schedule sounded that good, so I was starting to get really depressed. Now all I need to do is sell my house so I can move to Columbus. But I'm not letting that stress me out today!

Yeah, I live in NE Ohio currently, so I should be able to manage on the 12k, plus my husband will be making some money working part time while he takes classes, so we should be good. I also heard that the 12k is a 50% appointment and you can get additional appointments working in the writing center or for one of their publications to make extra money. The 12k is definitely doable, but I'm worried about the 8k. I'm worried about Kent in general, though!
-
Oh man, what a bunch of whiners! I'm getting 8k for an English MA at Kent State. I'm desperately hoping to make it off the wait list at Ohio State, where I can earn the kingly sum of 12k!

That's awesome, gradgirl! I emailed last week but never received a response. I think my email may have been shuffled aside in all the open house busy-ness. I think I'll call if I don't hear anything by the end of this week.
They did tell us that their deadline was the 17th at the open house, which went really well. The current grad students were super friendly and helpful and I enjoyed my one-on-one meetings with the faculty, particularly with one prof. I was very impressed, but I'm not so sure it was a good idea to go because if I don't get in now I'll cry my eyes out. My only other option at this point is Kent State, which I may have mentioned before, and I really don't want to end up there.
Kara, we probably saw each other at the open house! There were a lot of people there, though, so maybe not. It was kind of awkward for me, because I didn't want to advertise the fact that I was on the wait list, so when people asked if I had definitely decided on OSU, I was like, "Yeah, I'm pretty sure I'll go here," adding "if I make it off the list!" in my head.

I am having the same problem. I've been accepted to Kent State with a teaching assistantship and I have until next Friday to accept the position. They said the offer of admission stands until April 15, but the assistanship will be given to someone else if I don't accept by next Friday. I'm waitlisted at Ohio State, which is where I would prefer to go, and I'm number 2 on the waitlist, so I think it's possible I could get in. I'm planning on just accepting the position at Kent if I don't hear back from OSU within the next week and then if I get in after next Friday, tell Kent I'm sorry but I got a better offer. My acceptance letter says if I accept and then want to back out after April 25th, I need permission in writing from graduate school or someone, I can't remember who. I think if they're giving you a deadline like that, it's acceptable to accept it and then turn them down later if need be.

I think I would be *slightly* less petrified if I knew I was admitted. I've been out of school for 4 years and working in insurance, so I feel like I've gone soft in the head and filled my brain with a bunce of insurance nonsense. I'm so worried I won't be able to have an intelligent academic conversation. I'm going to do my homework on the people I put on the form, and I think that will make me feel a lot better. I don't feel like there's anything I could do at this point to get them to admit me if they simply don't have the spots available, but I do feel like there are a lot of stupid things I could do to make them say, "What were we thinking when we put her on the waitlist?!" Anyway, it's too bad you're not going because we could have chatted together about waitlist woes. I'm only about 2.5 hours away from Columbus, and I'm pretty much looking for any excuse to take a day off of work, so I'll be there. Good luck on the rest of your decisions!
-
Hey gradgirl, are you still waitlisted at Ohio State? If you are, are you planning on going to the admitted student Open House? I asked if I could because I figured if I do get admitted, it will be good to have gone, and hopefully I'll hear one way or the other by the date of the Open House (3/30). They said it's not a problem if I go, but now I'm totally nervous about it! I have to list faculty I'm interested in meeting, and I know who I want to meet, but I'm going to be completely intimidated and tongue tied when I do.

Meridionale, I just wanted to say thank you for the awesome service you are providing us and say that I love the new automatically updating survey. I hope you are blessed with many acceptances this admissions season! You deserve it!

Ah, it seems in my panic induced state from seeing the Indiana acceptance in lotf629's post, I misread your signature line - I see now that you are still waiting to hear back from NYU. That's a relief that they haven't made decisions yet!
I'm still curious about Indiana, though, lotf629 - was that acceptance for English, and if so, when/how did you hear?
