  1. My undergraduate degree was in linguistics, but my program was small and had no linguistics labs and very few research opportunities. I made the most of it by doing language-related work outside of academia too, but it was still a little frustrating. I've spent a lot of time working with Native American tribes (helping in dictionary construction/language revitalization) so I want to continue my education in indigenous language preservation/revitalization (as my big picture goal).
  2. I think this could be helpful for current and future applicants. Comment below: Your "candidate profile" (whatever this means to you, possibly including: majors, minors, gre scores, gpa, publications, work experience, etc.). To which schools/programs you applied. What your interests/focuses would be. [Optional] Update when you hear back from the schools
  3. I applied to University of Michigan, UT Arlington, Purdue, and Ball State...I don't feel very confident though.
  4. Also I'm potentially getting an internship at The Language Conservancy which I think would look really good on an application especially because the concentration im applying for is language&culture and my goal is to eventually work in aid of language preservation
  5. I don't know whether the lack of activity in the linguistics section is good or bad news. Bad news because there's less advice. Good news because maybe the program I'm applying to will be less competitive..
  6. I ran into a similar issue and ultimately I decided to work on a linguistics project by myself. It's harder without institutional support, but not impossible
  7. Hi! I'm a linguistics student, planning on applying to the M.A. linguistics program at CSULB. In the future, I'd love to get my doctorate from UC Berkeley, but since my undergraduate school offers little research opportunities for undergraduate students I think an M.A. would be a good stepping stone. I *know* I would succeed in a Ph.D program, I just have to work on proving it! School: IUPUI (My degree is from Indiana University) Majors: Linguistics & Creative Writing Minor: Literature Cum. GPA: 3.7 Linguistics GPA: 3.9 GRE: Though I've been studying for the GRE, CSULB doesn't ask you to take it Conference Presentations: 4 Other Stuff: Liberal Arts Ambassador, Service Scholar, Dean's List, Portfolio for the Literary Arts Scholarship Experience: Writing consultant (conducted staff meetings and conference presentations on language diversity/preservation) & Editorial intern at Indianapolis Monthly
