  1. Does any one know of a good info resource for fully funded MFA programs in the visual arts? I am a mixed media artist, mostly 2-D with a mix of traditional and digital skills so I would fit into many types of programs and would prefer something eclectic with a mix of digital and traditional tools. I am already a tenured professor so I am doing this for myself and will only go to something fully funded. There are many sources of info for fully funded MFA programs in writing, but the visual arts info is harder to find. I have found a few programs, but I'm greedy, I want options:) Any area is fine and I am looking for a full residency program.

I don't know if you have looked into the University of Michigan, but the program is fully funded and you are paid to teach. Another bonus is the fact that you don't have to apply to a specific department, so you are free to combine whatever mediums you see fit. The technology you have available to you is also amazing. To top it all off they give you money to travel anywhere in the world that you want after your first year!

I know this is a super late response, but if you end up waiting one more year I would keep UMich in mind.

Good luck this time around though!

  2. Who is applying and where? I want to know what programs people have actually checked out that seem to fit the ticket when it comes to NG...I think people know what I mean when I say that.

I'm definitely going for (in no order):

    USC

    UCLA

    UCD

    UCB

These programs I've checked out and they fit what I feel has a good fit for me

    Maybe:

    U of M - went there...not as conceptual friendly as I'd like...but awesome package (8K a semester + full Apple setup)

Stanford - still yet to visit, emailed for a meeting, got told to go to an info session (hate those)

    UCSD

By U of M do you mean the University of Miami or the University of Michigan? If you mean the University of Michigan, they are very conceptual, and quite open in general.

  3. @Everythingbagel: Arresting work!smile.gif I can't wait to see where you go with it..

Thank you! That is a very nice compliment! I got into the University of Michigan's Art & Design 3 year PAID program!!! It is a very interdisciplinary program with a ton of amazing and technologically

advanced resources! I have a lot of BIG ideas! I will also be taking science classes while I am there to help inform my work.

    I started a graduate school blog: http://www.esposedpreserved.com

I will update it with the work I do in school.

    I am very very excited!

  4. Congratulations! I know how tough it is to be wait-listed and have to sit around waiting for a response. This is obviously the program you were meant to be in! Isn't it great when your prayers are answered?biggrin.gif

It is sooooo great!!! I worked my tush off and it actually paid off!! I am going to be a TA too, and I hope they put me in a class with freshmen undergrads... I have never done anything like that before, and I look like I am 16!

  5. I just got into a 3 year paid program. I was #1 on the wait-list, and I was so nervous. I thought, who in their right mind is going to give up a spot (10 total) in a 3 year paid program???

I was woken up Friday morning with the unbelievable news. Seriously, I still can't believe it... and I was starting to think I was crazy for not being the most ecstatic person in the world, or at least just ecstatic...

Now I know I am normal, and that a lot of us are going through these feelings of inadequacy. We just have to try our very best and prove it to ourselves that we can work really hard!!!

  6. Don't worry! I felt the same way at Northwestern AND at Yale. I think most feel like they bombed it...but that doesn't necessarily mean the faculty think you did poorly. I have heard of more people not being accepted that think they aced their interview.

Anyone else have interviews that felt the same way?

YES!!!! I interviewed at UMich and it was brutal. I had to present the portfolio I submitted to the program and then I was asked questions from the 3 faculty members and 1 graduate student who were in the room with me. The lady right next to me really made me so nervous for some reason. I felt like I couldn't access any of the information I could have accessed if I had time and room to think right. I was mortified after I got out of the interview!

However, I am #1 on the wait-list, so I didn't screw up too badly.

I understand how you feel, and I wish you the best of luck!

  7. Minor good news: I am an alternate for MICA. So there is still a chance. I actually only applied to MICA. May have been a stupid move on my part, but who knows, it might work out!

I only applied to UMich, but it was really the only school I really really wanted to go to. My portfolio is so diverse when it comes to the media I work with, but is drawn together by my concepts. This means that most schools wouldn't work well for me. I know it was dumb, and that I could have found at least a few other programs that I could have made work for me, but I just wanted to put allllll my effort into UMich. Luckily I am 1st on the wait-list and they say that every year at least 1 person from the wait list gets in. I just have to wait patiently, but the fact that I didn't apply anywhere else makes this SO much more stressful.

    I wish you the best!!!!!

  8. I'm right there with you! Chewing my fingers off waiting for the University of Tennessee. How many spaces does your program have? UT has two, both fully funded, and an agonizing waitlist of two.

Have you tried calling your department at UMich? I had an optimistic conversation with the department head at UT - he said it's looking promising, but of course nothing is guaranteed until April 15th. (!!!)

    Is Michigan your first choice?

Best of luck in these long 3 weeks!

They pick the top 10, and I am #11. The assistant said that every year at least somebody drops their spot, and unless there is an anomaly this year I should be okay. I just hope there isn't a possibility of me getting pushed back from #1 on the waiting list...

Yes, Michigan is really the only school that I feel is absolutely perfect for me!
