  1. The following appeared in a letter to the editor of the Balmer Island Gazette. "On Balmer Island, where mopeds serve as a popular form of transportation, the population increases to 100,000 during the summer months. To reduce the number of accidents involving mopeds and pedestrians, the town council of Balmer Island should limit the number of mopeds rented by the island's moped rental companies from 50 per day to 25 per day during the summer season. By limiting the number of rentals, the town council will attain the 50 percent annual reduction in moped accidents that was achieved last year on the neighboring island of Seaville, when Seaville's town council enforced similar limits on moped rentals." Write a response in which you discuss what questions would need to be answered in order to decide whether the recommendation is likely to have the predicted result. Be sure to explain how the answers to these questions would help to evaluate the recommendation. The following argument is flawed for numerous reasons. There are a lot of assumptions stated in the argument that have no basis. Firstly, by limiting the number of moped rentals does not imply that the number of accidents will decrease because the citizens of Balmer Island may be rich enough to buy a moped themselves rather than taking it on rent. Also, though mopeds are a popular means of transport it does not mean that there isn't any other form of transport available and vastly used by the citizens. The above argument also assumes that the citizens of Balmer are the same as the citizens of Seaville, as it might be true that the citizens of the latter might be more calm and careful not breaking traffic rules and using their vehicles within the speed limit. Whereas, this might not be the case with Balmer Island where its citizens are young and hence tend to drive their mopeds in a rash manner causing accidents. This argument could have been more specific had it provided the details of the age of citizens in both the Islands and also the cost of a moped and whether or not it can be afforded by an individual in Balmer. Therefore, since the argument makes several unwarranted assumptions, a definite conclusion on this matter cannot be drawn.
  2. Governments should offer a free university education to any student who has been admitted to a university but who cannot afford the tuition. Write a response in which you discuss your views on the policy and explain your reasoning for the position you take. In developing and supporting your position, you should consider the possible consequences of implementing the policy and explain how these consequences shape your position. Even though I believe in equality for all and giving opportunity to the under privileged, I believe that the government should not offer free university education to a student totally free of cost. The reason for my stand on the statement is because even though the under privileged student is smart and a brilliant student, there might be a student who can afford the tuition but is more brilliant and hardworking than the poor guy. Therefore, it would be unfair on the well to do students part if the poor student alone gets a free university education not having to worry about his fees at all. Also there might be some students who can afford the tuition but the amount they need to pay causes their family members to work overtime and also themselves to work part time. Therefore, this reason also creates an unfair situation. To overcome this problem one solution that the Government can provide is by providing student education loans at a very low interest rate to poor students so that these students can accept the loan and complete their education. Also based on their performance in the university the interest rates can be brought down or reduced. This measure does not create any unfair situations for the middle class and the rich students. Therefore, the Government should not provide an university education to a student totally free of cost no matter what and instead should help them by providing loans to them, part time jobs to them and may be if possible jobs to their family members so that they can quickly repay their loans back.
  3. Woven baskets characterized by a particular distinctive pattern have previously been found only in the immediate vicinity of the prehistoric village of Palea and therefore were believed to have been made only by the Palean people. Recently, however, archaeologists discovered such a "Palean" basket in Lithos, an ancient village across the Brim River from Palea. The Brim River is very deep and broad, and so the ancient Paleans could have crossed it only by boat, and no Palean boats have been found. Thus it follows that the so-called Palean baskets were not uniquely Palean. This argument is flawed for numerous reasons. Firstly, it assumes that a particular type of weaving or a distinctive pattern which was made in the immediate vicinity of the village of Palea and hence was made by Palean people. It could also be true that some one from some other village such as the Lithos could have come and settled in Palean and hence woven those baskets which later the Palean people learnt and largely adopted. Second, since the Brim River was deep and broad and Paleans needed a boat to cross the river, it neglects the three other forms of transportation such as through air, road or railways and assumes that boats are the only way to travel to the village of Lithos. Since it neglects the other forms of transportation to Lithos, it can be true that some person from Palea had taken other forms of transport and went to Lithos were he used to weave baskets in this distinctive pattern and hence the basket was made only by Palean people. Therefore, it would have been better if the argument contained more information about the distance or the mode of transports possible from Palea to Lithos and also the time period of the discovery of the basket in Lithos might have helped us determine whether the basket is truly Palean or not. Because the argument makes several unwarranted assumptions, I would like to conclude that we cannot form a fixed conclusion about the origin of the baskets.
  4. Though technology has made our lives simpler and easier, I believe in the fact that since people today are becoming more and more relied on this beast, the ability to think, imagine and create stuff has largely deteriorated. Firstly, people nowadays have become so reliant on this small yet powerful devices called mobile phones. Today mobile phones have taken a new name though, now they have become smarter and hence the name smart phones. These smart phones have not only become our alarm clocks, our cell phones, our calendar and other day to day necessary stuff. The large number of applications and games available on the app store or play store which is so easy to download such that even a small child can do it. It makes children so lazy that now a day’s children no more spend their evenings in parks or playing outside with friends. Rather they are chatting online with their peers on Facebook or reading the tweets of a famous celebrity or playing games on it. I have seen people carry out small calculations which can be done in the mind using their smart phones. In fact, when we wake up in the morning the first thing we see is our mobile and obviously the last thing we see in the night is also that. For some people the mobile is also their alarm clock, so they get a good reason to not keep their mobiles away even while sleeping. Also the harmful radiations released from these mobiles or any other technological device as such has been causing many dangerous diseases like brain cancer, tumors and what not. Therefore, it is high time we limit our usage of these hi tech devices for our good alone and not ruin our creativity, imagination and the future generations thinking process.
