  1. Thanks for the reassuring words, Kyjin! So did you do Fulbright Student or Fulbright-Hays? Am I correct to assume that there are PhD students applying for both? Based on what I've read, I got the sense that dissertation research = Fulbright-Hays.
  2. I'm thinking about applying for a research Fulbright in the future, but the eligibility requirement about not having lived in the country you're applying to for a significant period of time is a bit perplexing. I have an E. Asian studies background and advanced language skills (Korean), but according to Fulbright Id be at a disadvantage if I applied there. Im interested to hear how others have crafted interesting research proposals for countries outside their "focus," but still relevant to their research/career going forward. Thanks!
  3. Success! Hope you all got good news too...
  4. I know...we definitely should hear this week. Considering how much Ive been obsessing this past month, Ill be realllllllly disappointed if I dont make it through. Good luck!
  5. Ahh, so I guess youre on a waitlist or something? Congrats anyways. Do you think youll wait it out a while? Im actually at IU already in a different dept., but heard nothing at all...I must be wayyy down the list.
  6. Really?? So they offered admission, but no funding? Ive heard they sent out the first round offers to people...so I guess Im on a waitlist? Havent heard anything
  7. And to complete the anthro shutout, a rejection from Brown this morn. I'm curious as to others' backgrounds....do you have BAs/MAs in anthro already? I feel like being a relative "outsider" to the field (Ive taken 3 courses in my career) might have put me at a disadvantage...
  8. Congrats to the Mich people...unfortunately it didnt work out for me either Seems like the ling. anthropologists among us are having much better luck this year!
  9. I heard the same..and that's what discouraged me from even applying there!
  10. It seems like only the linguistic anth people were contacted then? Im still holding out hope..I think if I can score outside funding, it might secure me a spot.
  11. Rejection from Duke. I did consider it quite a reach, considering the # they admit each year.
  12. Im guessing its a no-go for Duke if I havent heard about an interview. Ah well, was a longshot!
  13. I applied to Duke as well and followed the citation model (probably had 4 in my SOP). Sociocultural @Duke is known for being HIGHLY theoretical so I think its good to show a grasp of the lit.
  14. Is anyone else having a hard time slogging through their statement of purpose? There are two related areas I'd like to explore as a doctoral student, but I'm not sure if I should just focus on one for the sake of clarity and conciseness. Of course I need two solid pages for the statement, but I'm trying to write as tight a narrative as possible.
  15. I'm nervous that my AW score (4; 54% below) might get me weeded out from many top ranked programs--most seem to indicate that the avg score for accepted students is 5. I scored in the 96th percentile on Verbal, so I can't really tell if retaking the exam to raise my writing score is worth it. Thoughts anyone?
  16. Ah good to find another Korean applicant...and I'm happy they gave a 5 day extension. I've yet to submit..maybe later tonight!
  17. Have people noticed on the "Interpreting your GRE scores" handout how much the percentile ranks for similar AW score have jumped in the past 5-6 years? I took the GRE for the first time back in 2007 and scored a 4 on AW; 33% scored below this. I retook the GRE this past week and (much to my dismay) scored a 4 again; this time, however, a 4 put me ahead of 54% of test-takers. I also noticed that fewer people have been taking the GRE since the 2007-2008 score interpretations came out. I wonder if the AW is being graded differently in recent years? Are we dealing with a less talented test-taker pool?
  18. Now that the application's out...who is applying for next summer? Working on personal statement now for advanced Korean. Any advice from previous recipients is also quite welcome!
  19. move in date approaches...anyone else settled into btown already? whats going on over there in summer?
  20. Ive had a change of heart and will try to live in Bloomington. Anyone know anything about the IU properties off campus? I wont have a chance to see anything in person. http://www.realestate.indiana.edu/location.html How are these places?
  21. The main reason would be saving the 15k+ in room and board. My stepdad lives in Indy, so I was expecting to live with him and pay just a nominal fee for utilities. How´s the traffic in Indiana anyways? I have never been in the Midwest in my life. Are you from Spain?
  22. Im leaning towards commuting from Indianapolis. I heard its about an hour each way..Anyone have info on the drive? I dont think 3 or 4 times a week would be too bad...
  23. I applied for a TAship (whis was a longshot, as my UG studies were in another area) but "budget constraints throughout the University have radically curtailed our ability to offer financial aid to even very deserving candidates." On the bright side, we're given up to 2 years of deferment, so I may just hold off and prepare fellowship apps for 2012.
