I think honestly that both are awesome schools. At this level, I'm pretty sure that you can't go wrong. However based on your other comment about Yale, I'd suggest that if you didn't enjoy the location/environment/faculty as much, it's probably not worth attending if you preferred UPenn and UM. The best place you can be for your PhD is where you'll have the best mentor support, lab environment, and support from other students in your cohort. Feel better, work better, and all that jazz.

What area of neuro are you interested in? I'm very tempted to tell you to come join me at Michigan :P - if you have any questions about the midwest/metro Detroit/or the university I'm happy to help! I promise to be as free of bias as possible, since growing up in the area and knowing a lot of current Michigan students I have gotten a LOT of input on my decision, haha.

I'm interested in stem cell biology relating to neurodevelopment/degeneration/regeneration, so there's great work being done by multiple faculty members at both schools. But yes, I had ruled Yale out, just wanted to make sure that wasn't a completely stupid decision lol. I live in the midwest now, so I'm familiar with the culture (and weather) and whatnot, but I'll definitely let you know if I have any specific questions about the university or Ann Arbor or whatnot! Thanks so much!

  2. Quick opinion question! It's been tough, but I've narrowed it down to Michigan and UPenn (both for neuroscience). They each have their pros and cons that I'm still sorting through, but I was wondering what you guys think about the 'prestige' of the programs. At this level, does the Ivy League 'name' carry significantly more weight than the public midwestern school (even though UM's neuro program is exceptional)? Pretending that the faculty, students, funding, culture, etc was all exactly even, how much does the name of the school actually matter, and if it does, how different are these two?

Whats the deal with BU GPN? On the admissions results page someone said all applicants received a rejection due to a coding error?

That's exactly what happened. Less than a day after our interview we all got a rejection email, followed a few hours later by a follow-up from the coordinator saying it was a mistake and they hadn't met or made any decisions yet. I know it wasn't their fault, but it was a huge mistake on their end if you ask me.

Has anyone recently heard from Rochester, Emory, UNC Chapel Hill, Boston University, or Albert Einstein college of medicine?

None of them sent invites for interview or sent rejections to me. Rochester said they were going to send the second batch, but that was almost a month ago.

    Not sure about Rochester.

A colleague of mine has already had her interview at Emory, so if they will be extending any more it would likely be soon and only a few.

UNC already had their interviews too. I was rejected, but a friend of mine has also heard nothing (positive or negative).

I received an interview invite for BU a few weeks ago and their only weekend is 2/25 so I would assume they're likely done.

    Not sure about Albert Einstein.

    Hope that helped a little?!

    Hi everyone,

I was wondering what people have been wearing to their interview days? I am a female and I was planning on wearing a full suit but am now second guessing being too overdressed. I was planning on business casual for the other days but not sure about the actual interview day.

    Thanks!

Most places have been suggesting business casual. There were always a few people (guys and girls) in full suits, but it was no where near the majority. Don't think it's ever a bad thing (better to be over than under), but they did sometimes stand out. I wore blazer/dark jeans for one day, dress pants and dress blouse for interview day, and a casual dress with tights for another day. Obvi don't wear jeans on interview day (although that did happen), but "nice" jeans for any of the casual outings were totally fine. Most people wore jeans at least one of the days, and it looked a bit odd when people wore dress pants for things like apartment tours.

Hello! Was anyone here at the UCI interview weekend? If so, do you know if they send out acceptances in waves?

I was. I have not heard anything. I see that they're calling, so maybe it's taking a while and/or they didn't work over the weekend. Let me know if you hear anything though!

Does anyone know about Boston University's Neuroscience or Behavioral Neuroscience interview invites? If any have gone out yet, or when to expect them?

I got an interview invite from them (Neuroscience) last week, but have no idea if they are rolling or did them all at once. The interview is the last week in February though, so I would expect them to get them all out relatively soon if they haven't already!

I also have not heard back from UNC BBSP. I didn't submit until the final deadline (12/5) so maybe that plays a part in it? I am also waiting to hear back from UCSD BMS and Columbia CMBS. Are these looking like rejections?

One of my coworkers submit by the early deadline and has heard nothing, another submit by the late deadline and got an interview, and I submit by the early one and just got a rejection yesterday so...seems like everything is up in the air at this point.

Is there a too late to send interview thank you emails? This weekend was crazy for me once I got back so it just didn't happen right away, and since I interviewed Friday I now feel like it's at the point where sending this far after might look worse than not sending. Also did you just contact your POI or every person you interviewed with?

Definitely don't think there's a 'too late' to send them (unless it's like a month later). I would guess that earlier is better, but later is far better than never (plus it's only Tuesday!) I sent them to each faculty I interviewed with, as well as the program coordinator and admissions head (or whoever ran the weekend, it varied by schools for me). But certainly, CERTAINLY, would still send them!

Hey everyone! I just had my first in-person interview weekend and (I think) it went really well. Had really great interviews - hit it off with a few faculty whose interests are right up my alley and who said they hoped to see me in the fall. I would be over the moon to be accepted at this program and now I'm extremely nervous! They said we should hear in 2 weeks by the latest, but from the admissions statistics they gave us it seems like I have an okay chance.

I want to send follow-up/thank you emails to the faculty I interviewed with, as well as a couple I communicated with along the way.  Was wondering if anyone had any suggestions on what to say? Can I reiterate my interest, or is that too much? I also wasn't sure when to email, as I just saw some of them as recently as today. Was thinking tomorrow or Monday? But I didn't want to bother anyone after a busy weekend.

    Cheers!!!

I have been sending my emails the following day, or two days at the latest. Most of my interviews have been ending on a Saturday morning, and I've been sending thank you's Sunday night (before they get slammed with Monday morning emails). They usually respond and have always seemed pleased to receive a follow-up. I've just been saying thanks, not reiterating my interest or anything about myself (I think that might be too much, especially after a busy weekend of nothing but). Just thanking them for their time, support, and answering my questions. I'd definitely send them though!

  11. To anyone who got a rejection email from Columbia Neurobiology & Behavior today, was it a mass email or was it personalized and are rolling out over time? I'm wondering why I have not gotten one, but I also did not receive an email invite to interview? I was under the impression that they had sent out all the invites.
