  1. I am currently enrolled in a horrible M.A. program. Observe how the staff interact with students whose encounters are unplanned. Observe how students interact with each other. Do students want to interact with you? If you are brave enough, ask how they are enjoying the program and pay close attention to their expressions. If you encounter a student who is not part of the 'show' of the visit, and are brave, ask for their personal email to ask specific questions about the program. If you can find recent grads online, email them, Insta message them, etc.

  2. Congrats! Why don't you try to track down some current students or recent graduates of the program, search around Winterthur's site to get their names, and maybe use Google to find school emails, some grads even have their own website. Most publish and speak often so should not be hard to find. Much luck!

Does anyone have any thoughts/advice regarding how to dress for an on-campus interview weekend? Most of the advice on the rest of the site seems geared towards STEM programs, and I feel like our program in particular likely has different expectations/standards.

I agree, difficult to figure out.

  4. Also, if anyone wants to message me to ask about Hunter, in general, feel free because the same department runs the undergraduate and graduate programs. I am taking a graduate course at Hunter this semester, and a lot of the professors also teach undergraduate courses, so I know a number of them personally. Many professors also overlap doing undergrad at various CUNY schools, grad at Hunter, and grad at CUNY Grad, where I took a grad course last semester.

Hey @Tiff's girl congrats! I think the interviews are, like any job, a decider between candidates. You can be great on paper, but they want to see I guess that those ideas are yours, that you can have your opinions challenged, and what you are like as a person to see how you will fit in with a small group for 6 years etc.

For preparing I would prepare like any job interview. Don't just list your skills, have examples to back them up. Read your POI's work and see how their work relates to your career and how their methodology could develop your approach to your thesis. Be ready to be questioned about everything to do with your proposed thesis.

This is also a good opportunity for you if your POI is on the panel because you don't want to be stuck with someone throughout a PhD that you can't work with. Like any job interview make sure you have questions for them that show you have thought through the next 6 years, what you need to make your research successful, and how they come into that. Good luck!!

Thanks for responding! What is a POI?

  6. Hey everyone, I've been scouring the Art History forums for the past couple of weeks for emotional support, this whole waiting thing is rough.

Undergrad: Hunter B.A., Art History & Political Economics

Grad Schools Applied: Bard, Parsons, Winterthur

Interest: American Dec Arts-- especially glass, wood, and porcelain

    Gpa: Pretty ok

    Gre: Slightly above average

Internships: First at a small NYC history museum, second at an art appraisal firm

I got an interview with Bard, so I'm really excited. I was wondering if anyone knows what an interview means? Does it mean you're in as long as you don't turn out to be a weirdo or perceived ax murderer? I was thinking maybe it's like meeting once before an arranged marriage, like it's gonna happen no matter what but it's nice to have an idea of what you're getting into.

    Thanks for reading!
