Hi all,
I've heard from all of my schools and have been painfully mulling over the decision for a few weeks and am still very unclear. I was accepted into UCLA, U Mich, and Minnesota for their PHD in Health Services Research/Health Policy and Management and am having a really hard time justifying one over the other. They are all offering comparable funding packages, obviously UCLA has a much higher cost of living but I feel like it is my "best fit" out of the three but I'm really uncomfortable with the idea of potentially struggling in LA on a PHD salary. Is it worth it to go with more practical options with a good fit (but not the best)?
Hi! I live in LA now by UCLA. Let me know if you need help with cost of living situation.
I am also struggling with my own decision: prestige over fit, funding vs cost of living, etc.
Good luck!

I officially submitted all of my decisions today! Most of the emails I got in response to my rejections were very warm, but one professor just wrote "I hope this is a good decision for you." That kind of cemented my feeling that I made the right choice in turning them down. I mean . . . that's a bit passive aggressive, right?
Wow super passive aggressive!

Congrats! You will definitely hear from more schools with good news! I also just received the official offer package from U of Maryland at Baltimore. Their package is very attractive (actually it is the highest I have had so far), but the safety issue is a major concern.
No updates from UT-Austin yet.
Just heard back from UT Austin. They said they have 7 people on the waitlist and prioritizing only the top 3. Unfortunately, I am not part of the top 3 because they don't have a potential faculty match for me yet. Hope you get better news! The universe is giving me all greenlights to accept Indiana's offer.

Has anyone heard back from the SUNY schools?

Officially rejected from USC as of 4:28AM.
Sorry to hear that. How did your interview go with U of Houston, though? Sending good vibes!

Also: I have just been accepted into University of Pittsburgh
So, which offer are you thinking of accepting?

Hi! Got an email to check portal. Letter via portal said I was invited for an interview.
Good luck, everyone!

I heard from Denver too. I just can't understand how their PhD candidates live on the stipend they hand out (for only 3 years?!). so many questions.
Right? I love city, the work they are producing, and the professors. Hate the stipend. The student I spoke with said that a lot of them just string together side hustles such as grading for professors, etc. But, still the cost of living is so high there! I've been Zillowing and its crazy!

I certainly hope that UT-Austin would get me off the waitlist... However, I have spoken with OSU's faculty and current students. They have been so warm and welcoming to me, which makes me tend so much more to accept it than merely just wait anxiously for a hope.
The same! Gotta love that mid-west hospitality! Did you hear anything back from UT Austin? The last time I emailed was when the email first went out, inquiring if the waitlist was ranked. Sherry said it wasn't yet. Just heard from U of Denver that I have been invited for an interview! Good news finally rolling in! Woohoo!

Go Buckeyes!
Congrats on the offer!! We may become classmates this fall. I think I am about to take up the offer.
Congrats! Are you still going to see if you get off the Waitlist for UT Austin? I just received an offer from Indiana University that looks really good, but a part of me still wants to see if UT Austin comes through.

All after the interview - decisions came 2 weeks later
When I went to go visit WashU (on my own), a current student told me that some people reject the offer. Some go to U Mich, U of Chicago, and Penn. So, don't lose hope! Congrats on getting the interview, I was flatly rejected!

At this point I just wish I got an answer. this process is completely exhausting and I am so sick of waiting (untill april 15th now). I don't think many people are going to decline their acceptance to WashU, but I am sure it's happened.
Is this after they flew you in for the interview?

Let me know what Denver says!
Dean just wrote back, "We are about to send out formal letters via our admissions office to students to update them on our admissions process. Please keep an eye out for that letter in the next day or so, or certainly by early next week."

A few weeks ago I was lucky enough to receive admission offers from 3 great schools. I was shocked and thrilled but also nervous and stressed about making a decision. One of them, UMB, was easy to turn down because I realized that their program didn't completely align with my focus but, I was sad because the idea of moving to Baltimore was really exciting. The other two, Loyola Chicago and University of Chicago were my top schools and I honestly didn't sleep for a few days. I am lucky to know several people who either attend or have attended both programs and live down the street from UChicago so talking to people is what really made the decision for me.
The big categories I weighed were:
- Faculty (Are the professors doing work I am interested and are they there to actually teach rather than just do research)
-Environment ( What kind of space do I want to be in for the next two years? Do I want ultra competitive or do I want supportive but challenging? )
- Opportunities ( A big name and top ranking comes with big opportunities. But, this is social work and I am not trying to become the next great researcher sooooo)
-Program Fit ( Is this school going to prepare me to work with clients and actually utilize theory and treatment methods? Or it is all about the critical theory of the profession)
I assume most other people will include location but I live 10 minutes from one and 30 from the other so it didn't matter to me.
Talking with as many people as I could, especially those who had graduated recently, was what really helped me to put all of these categories into perspective.
I couldn't be more happy with my decision to attend Loyola Chicago!
Congrats! I didn't get into U of Chicago, but received a nice personal email from the Director. Now its just waiting for the other schools to roll in...
-
Did anyone apply to Indiana University? Director said admission decisions will be sent out next week.
I also applied to University of Denver GSSW, but they have been silent. I will probably send an email later today inquiring about their ETA.
Hang in there, everyone! Happy Friday!

Hey I am also waitlisted...sigh... UT-Austin is my top choice, so I already wrote them an email enquiring about the chance of getting in. I certainly hope that both of us will be able to get in!
I have received offers from two other schools. I am a bit worried if it is worthwhile to keep waiting for UT-Austin.
I haven't gotten any offers yet. My first two were rejections from WashU and U of Chicago. I asked if the waitlist is ranked, they said they haven't ranked it yet. Positive vibes!!!

Waitlist's certainly happen! Definitely a good thing, and mainly top applicants will move around schools so surely the waitlist will move around some.
Thanks for the pep talk! Really trying to remain hopeful!

Well, just got an email from UT Austin that I was Waitlisted. At least it wasn't my third straight NO. What are the chances of getting off the waitlist?
I still have 3 final hopes. Please send positive vibes. Really trying not to get too discouraged since these first three were the Big 3 (top tier programs).
On 2/12/2018 at 6:06 PM, SWjdg said:I didn't warrant a special email I suppose. I'm pretty content with the decision, I just dislike lazy responses - especially when I've talked to faculty there personally.

Heard back on Thursday that I was rejected from UChicago, just generic letter on the application webpage
I got rejected as well. However, the Chair of the SSA Program wrote me a personal email copying the two POIs I spoke with, encouraging me to apply again next year because she enjoyed reading my application and just didn't have space for me.
I am 0 for 2 thus far! These 2 were my reaches though, so hopefully I'll hear a YES from the 4 soon.

@Thewait I am also very nervous now because I have not got any good news from all the programs I applied. : ( I think an offer rain will occur in these two weeks. We'll have fabulous results!
Thank you! Putting it out in the universe, that we are gong to receive awesome news soon!!!

Hi everyone!
I am pretty nervous over here.
I applied to WashU, U of Chicago, UT Austin, U of Denver, IU and SUNY-Albany.
Got my rejection from WashU and based on people already hearing back from U of Chicago, I probably didn't get in either.

Hi! I applied to GSSW for Fall 2018 PhD. I submitted my application on Jan. 1. Haven't heard anything.
I also applied to WashU, U of Chicago, UT Austin, IU and SUNY Albany. Rejected from WashU, and based on others already hearing back from U of Chicago, I probably didn't get in either. Ugh! I just need one school to take me!!!
