Really sorry to hear that @T-boy I think official letters sooner rather than later are a good practice. Not sure if may be you had been kept on a waitlist or what before they responded but it is just ridiculous how they handle applicants! Yes they know how much we want to get into their schools but they should regard that as a need to be professional and courteous at all times to applicants.

Sorry again. Are there other schools you applied to? Has the status changed on Carleton Central

Thanks a lot. I absolutely agree with you that schools need to handle applicants better because in all actuality they need our money, more reason for them to be courteous. Also my status changed today on Carleton Central as well. This has been quite the experience anyways I applied to ryerson and I’m waiting to hear back from them. That’s my last option.

I find their lack of keeping within the standard time of giving responses 2-3 months after deadlines being in January, to be very unprofessional. I fear that it doesn’t look good for our candidature, but they still should just inform students within a reasonable time frame.

So Carleton replied my email and this has to be the rudest reply I’ve ever gotten. I emailed them about my application status and apparently I got rejected. I got this reply...

“Thank you for your interest in the Carleton University Master of Journalism program, and for your patience as our admissions committee conducted its deliberations. As you know, the Master of Journalism is a small enrolment program with a limited capacity to admit international students. I am afraid that we are not able to make a recommendation of admission in your case. We do wish you all the best with your future endeavors.”

Is this even fair? You didn’t let me know all this while till I messaged you and you are no rejecting me? Wow. Carleton has disappointed me

Have you called them to ask?

So I called Ryerson today to know my status update and I got the same vague answer like the email they sent to me. They said they can’t tell me when to expect a decision but that my application is being reviewed.

I later called Carleton to know my status as well and I was told that my application is still with the department and it has not been recommended for admission but it is still being reviewed.

At this point, I am confused and honestly tired of waiting since January for a decision. I don’t even know what to do at this point.

  4. Please has anyone heard from Ryerson at all because i got an email from them on the 29th of March saying this

“We would like to take this opportunity to again thank you for your interest in Graduate Studies at Ryerson University.  This acknowledgement confirms that we received your documents through the applicant upload portal for the School of Graduate Studies for the term commencing Fall 2018 for the following program:

Master of Journalism - Full Time

To confirm the status of your document submissions, you may log into the Applicant Portal to determine which documents have been received by our office.  Please upload any missing documents listed.

Your application has been reviewed for consideration and has been forwarded to the Program Admissions Committee for review.  Once an admission decision has been reached, you will be notified by email.  Due to high volume of inquiries, we are unable to respond to individual requests concerning your admissions decision.”

I did not understand what they meant by they just received my application cos I finished applying in January. So does this mean I’m waitlisted, might be accepted or what?

Thank you! Did you email them? I know it's a controversial topic, but I did that with all of my programs expect for McGill (they already sent me the rejection in the beginning of March so no need to bother them). Everyone got back to me and their information has really helped evaluate when I will receive an answer. And it didn't feel like it was inappropriate to ask at all.

I emailed Carleton second week of March and they told me that they would get back to me when there’s space in the program. Ryerson emailed me last week to tell me that they have successfully received all my documents and when a decision is reached, they would email me. I had completed my application for Ryerson since January so I was shocked about the email. At this point, I don’t know what else to do but wait even tho I just want to know!!!!

I got my first acceptance this morning from Royal Roads University! Does anyone know anything about this school? Still waiting to hear back from U of Ottawa and Carleton.

    Hey!!!!!!

finally some good news. I am excited for you. I hope you get other ones as well.

  8. Hey guys,

I’m seriously tired of waiting. I already emailed Ryerson on the 1st of March and they gave me a vague waiting time between March and April. I don’t know if I should email them again to confirm. I’m just so anxious. I’m an international student by the way for the master of journalism. HELP ME!!!!!

The admin staff at Carleton are on strike and I've been told this will cause some delay in sending out offers

Thank you T-Boy, I got accepted last week (Communication) and my status changed to Reviewed by the School of Graduate Studies (or something).

That’s really nice. I’m happy for you, at least some good news. For the graduate program yeah? I’ll just wait for their strike to come to an end before I start checking again

I don’t know them personally but I saw someone on Facebook saying they got accepted.

Not the same program as yours but I got accepted to Carleton as an international student.

    Hey!!!! Congratulations!!!

    Excited for you.

Finally some good news and hope. When did you get the news? And what program?

What is depressing is that they don't treat international students on an equal footing. One thing is a limited number of places for international students, which is totally common and fair; another — equal treatment of all applicants in the admission process.

I actually emailed them, and they said they "aim to have responses sent out by the end of March." I guess by "responses" they pretty much mean "rejections" here?

Yeah you’re right. I don’t think it is mainly rejections anyway, they just need to hear back from domestic students with the deadline given to them before they attend to international students. Let’s have faith that they would get back to us with something positive soon.

  12. 5 hours ago, Slode said:

Same here. I applied in mid-January (PhD in Communication) and heard nothing from them. Although some domestic students have already been accepted, my application status is still "Preliminary review required", meaning they still haven't even started reviewing my application just because I'm an international student.

    Hello,

It’s sad that this is happening tbh but I hope they answer you soon because seeing domestic students post that they have gotten accepted is quite depressing.

    Hi,

I emailed Carleton this morning to see whether it is the same procedure for their Communication MA. If yes, I will complain and I will also request my money back. It still doesn't make any sense to me that you would accept domestic students first, and IF there is availability, you'll take a look at the international students. If that is their policy, I cannot change it, but they should clearly state it on their website. I would have never applied (and hoped for an acceptance) if I had known this... I'll let you know how it goes if you're or anyone else is interested..

    Hey,

It still baffles me that they are doing this but I guess it’s routine. I would be glad if you let me know what they say. Thank you.

I got my Carleton acceptance this week for Journalism & Comms - maybe they're sending out acceptances on a rolling basis? not sure if that helps! I'm a Canadian student though

    Hey!

Congratulations!!! I believe they are sending out acceptance letters to Canadians first and if there is any space left they will contact the international students (me).

I might be the only one, but I think this is unacceptable in some way. I mean you apply to a program thinking that you have the same chance of getting in like everyone else, and then they tell you after that they sometimes only accept 1(!!!!) international student? No go.

You’re not the only one, I was feeling some type of way when I read it as well. It’s sad to know that with the many international students that would apply, only one might get picked and that is only if one of the accepted domestic students declines an offer.

I'm guessing they will see how many of the domestic students they have sent out offers to accept the offers and then decide on looking at how many international students they are looking to admit.

It really sucks that they have such a limited opportunity for international students, really limits how holistic a course is, but then again it seems like a pretty small program so it's not unusual as well because it's common practice to first look at domestic students.

Don't give up hope, it's not a rejection. You're still in the game.

It actually really sucks but I understand. Thank you for the reassurance. I’ll keep waiting

  17. Thank you for your interest in the Carleton University Master of Journalism program and thank you for your patience as our admissions committee conducts its deliberations. You should know that the MJ is a limited enrolment program to which only 20 or so students are admitted each year. We first admit a complement of domestic students, and only once that cohort has been settled upon do we turn our attention to international applicants. As well, we only have the capacity to admit a very small number of international students — sometimes as few as one.

We are currently in the process of waiting to hear from some of the domestic applicants to whom we have extended offers of admission. It may be a few weeks before we will know how many spaces in the program, if any, will be available to international applicants. Again, we thank you for your forbearance.

So I just got this email from Carleton, please someone help me make sense of this...
