  1. I didn't see this mentioned yesterday, but I found out that a girl from my school got a Full Grant to Canada! I'm very happy for her, but I do not envy of having to live through a Canadian winter come November.

Anyone else think the first Friday in April sounds particularly fortuitous for Fulbright notifications?

Friday the fifth: will Fulbright finalists finally be free from frustration??

  2. Eli: Thanks for the update, and for contacting all of these groups!

CrystalDee: For the group I want to research with, it would probably actually be better to learn Swedish. It's also the second official language of Finland, so that's one more reason. But honestly, everyone speaks English quite well so there's no real proficiency needed for any of them. It would still be good for me to learn it though, since it will probably be helpful in the future -- I'm working on it, but haven't been able to give it quite as much attention as I'd like since I've been kind of swamped this semester. I'm teaching a class and have to write my own exams, lecture notes, etc. On top of that I have 3 more talks to prepare this month (I just got done with another one a few hours ago), a challenging class, and my regular research... altogether I'm not left with too much time. I'm ready for this semester to be done.

  3. Finland applicant checking in: I'm still here, but haven't heard anything yet. It's officially the latest they've responded in at least 4 years. The nerves, they're wracked...

Congrats to those who were chosen!

  4. While we wait, I never did ask, what are your plans for Finland? I'm looking at the transformation of the Finnish Education system through a genealogical/pragmatic historical methodology, if I get accepted (knock on wood). I have affiliation with the University of Yvaskla

I applied for a full grant in order to do some math research, mainly. You'd be surprised at how much more productive a group can be when physically together for a long period of time, as opposed to occasional Skype sessions and such. I'd also like to observe the education system there, since I plan on being a professor in the future. Have you heard of this documentary called The Finland Phenomenon? I just saw a screening of it last week, and it was pretty fascinating. But it also got me more attached to the country, which I should really minimize in case I don't get the Fulbright...

  5. Karoliina at the Finland office said we should expect to hear back from Finland for better or worse by the end of the month via IIE. I confirmed with IIE today that we will hear this directly from them and not from Finland/FFSB. So hopefully we will know in a week and a few days! I'm definitely ready to just finally know and be able to plan my life. Keeping my fingers crossed for you!

Yikes, this is getting intense. Thanks for the info -- my fingers are crossed for you too!

  6. Congrats to everyone who got an acceptance, fingers crossed for alternates, and my condolences to those who didn't get it. Hang in there!

I've fortunately been able to stay calm for the last couple weeks, but Finland usually responds very late March/very early April. So I think my nerves are going to slowly creep back up in the coming days... yikes.

  7. Hey all,

My name is Eli Kramer and I'm a finalist for a full grant to Finland to study their education system. Has anyone heard any news for better or worse about their Finnish grants?

Thanks for any help in advance!

    Best Regards,

    Eli

Hey Eli -- fellow Finland hopeful here! Unfortunately, I haven't heard a peep since finding out I was a finalist, nearly two months ago. It looks like in the past few years, Finland applicants have heard back in the last week of March/first week of April. But with the news of some responses coming in earlier this year, I wouldn't rule out hearing back any time at all. Good luck to you!

  8. Are the floodgates starting to open?? There have been responses in both of the last two days... maybe I'm just too impatient!

Congrats to all those who have heard so far!!

  9. The day before hearing about making it into the second round, I got Chinese food for lunch. The fortune: "There is a prospect of a thrilling time ahead for you."

Today I got Chinese again. This time, it's "Fortune smiles upon you at this time."

  10. Congrats!!

What time? And what was the email address that sent it to you/ the subject line? I'm trying to determine if it was the U.S. Fulbright people or the Finland Fulbright group.

Sometimes the country you are applying to sends out notifications separate from the U.S, office, and sometimes different countries work differently, so that may explain why you have gotten one and others haven't.

    Congrats again!

I got it at 9 am EST. It was sent by the Finland group -- haven't heard from the US group yet. Thanks!

  11. I listened to a webinar; and Rachel or Cara stated that %60 grantee are graduating seniors/recent graduates, %20 grantees are At-Large and %20 are post-doctoral candidates.

Follow the link for audio info:

Where do you think a mid-program PhD student would fall among those categories? I'm a few years out of undergrad, but not a post-doc and am still in schooling.

I'm applying to Finland and was told I sent in a strong application, but I'm still terrified more and more as Thursday gets closer!
