Thanks for the replies! I'm kind of limited to the areas as mentioned above - it doesn't look like I'll have a car or anything. I was wondering if those on here could answer a specific question about an area: I had a slightly more specific set of requirements than most (2 bed/2 bath). Of the many places I contacted, one that was available is called 'Oak Hill Apartments' - the address is 3078, Terrace Street, Pittsburgh, PA. I know this is in Oakland, and that the area generally isn't as favored as some others by grad student - but I was swayed by the amenities on the website and the fact that it matched everything I was looking for. On the flipside... I've read some very mixed reviews about the place (and the area in general). From Google street view, the area seemed pretty nice, and quite residential. The rent isn't that cheap, so that too indicated a reasonably good standard of living in general - but I've read some reviews that say some totally contradictory.. especially about the safety of the neighborhood. Some of these really negative reviews are from a long time ago........ so does anyone know what Terrace Street is like now? Would you recommend someone to live there? It's pretty close to the ETC - so that's a plus point for me, but I was just looking for some opinions from those that know better.

Well oops.. I think I wasn't exactly clear. I'm headed to Carnegie Mellon's Entertainment Technology Center this Fall - and at those rates I think it would make sense to look into studio apartments (that was before Utilities right? If after I might even try to check out 1 BR ones). Either way, do any of you know the location of the ETC (the address says 700 Technology Drive) - it's a bit off from CMU. Are there any areas that I should be looking at that are close to this? In my conversations so far Shadyside seems to be the most popular one for CMU grad students, but I'm wondering if this same logic also applies to those at the ETC

+1 to the above question. I'm headed to Pittsburgh for a Masters program this Fall, and it seems that sharing an apartment would be the most feasible option (when chalking up comfort/preference against costs). If anyone has tips for finding people to live with, it'd be great if you could share them
  4. I've read up a lot about the Media Labs - and from what I can tell the main options after finishing a Masters there are to go into industry, or complete a PhD at the Media Lab itself. Like you said, the Media Lab is a non-traditional program, and while the CSAIL in MIT had an amazing reputation for the areas you're talking about, the MIT Media Lab is more known for creating products and "cool" things end to end - with interdisciplinary focus. If I was you, I'd jump at MIT, and then try to continue for a PhD at the Media Lab itself - but if you're 100% sure you want to go to a PhD program like Berkeley, Georgia Tech seems to be the better option. Especially if you have funding
  5. Guess I'm a bit late to this thread, anyway - I'm headed to the Entertainment Technology Center at CMU. Great that there's someone from Pittsburgh here, maybe you can help us with a few (possibly stupid) questions over the next few months
  6. Nice to see other people looking into the same type of thing. Utah seems to have a program called Entertainment Arts and Engineering. It's pretty new, and I personally have only limited knowledge of it, but it is something that came up when I was searching for similar programs earlier - http://mgs.eae.utah.edu/ From what I gathered, the concept of this place seems quite similar to CMU's ETC. Georgia Tech also has a Digital Media program you could check out - it seemed interesting, though a bit different from the others mentioned. I also recall reading somewhere that UC Irvine has something called Arts Computation Engineering (or something like that at least)... also interdisciplinary. I didn't look into that too deeply, so I don't really know the details, you could read up more and see if it fits with what you're interested in. One other thing you might want to think about is research focus vs. application focus. For example, MIT Media lab is all about in depth research - most students move on to PhDs and so on... on the other hand CMU's ETC does not even have a PhD, and involves no research : it is about practical application and things like that.
  7. I'm still waiting for Georgia Tech - applied way back in the middle of November. No status change for me as yet... (still says pre-eval etc etc). Hope they start sending more admits out soon, and have me on the list of recipients Btw, is Georgia Tech sending acceptance information via email, or is it only through postal mail? I'm asking because I remember reading the latter on the website, but the ECE department seems to be sending out decision information by email as well.
  8. Congratulations sidm. Great to hear I live in India.. so many weeks of anxiety about this decision await. The worst bit is that the postal service here is far from efficient, so it could take anywhere between 2 and 6 weeks. I wish Harvard would also send an email with a scanned copy of the decision.
  9. From what I can tell the ECE department seems to have started rolling out some replies - mostly rejects. This is from another forum I'm a member of. I've applied to CS - and am waiting anxiously. Got an email on the 4th of Feb saying my application was complete, but no word since then Anyone else out there?
  10. more company for you then - however I don't think I would qualify as anxiously waiting. I'm pretty certain of a reject - unkown University / GPA nothing to write home about / no real research experience. But hey, company is company
  11. I'm applying to a Masters in Graphics, and from my research these are the schools that have interesting things going on. Note, not all these places offer a Masters degree. Also, the list is in no particular order CMU Stanford MIT UC Berkeley Brown University University of Virginia University of Utah Georgia Tech UW Madison (more into Geometry related stuff from what I can see) Columbia UPenn UNC Chapel Hill Cornell University UCLA USC Harvard (couple of guys there) University of Washington in Europe, the ones I've found are: ETH Zurich Saarland University (for PhD in the Max Planck Research Institute)
  12. Sorry if this is slightly off-topic, given the title of the post. I have applied to a Masters program at the CS department in Brown, and I was wondering if you know what the chances of an assistantship (either teaching or research) are in the department. I know for a fact that they don't offer "automatic" financial aid to Masters students, so I wont get any aid with my admit, but are there any Masters students in such positions? If so, do you know approximately how hard it is for these students to get the assistantship (i.e. is it one exceptional candidate, or is it normal to see).
  13. Congratulations! I received an acceptance from UPenn as well - I applied to the Computer Science department for a Masters in Computer Graphics and Game Technology. Good luck for any remaining schools you applied to
  14. I'm only applying next year, but thought that maybe I could help a little bit. I've traveled briefly in the Netherlands, and have some friends who have lived there. From these experiences, I must say that language-wise, its one of the easiest places in Europe. A high percentage of people speak English, so getting around shouldn't be a problem, unlike in many other parts of Europe. They have some Dutch courses as well, so you'll start to pick up the basics over time. Don't sweat the part about being a foreigner too much. Europe is in general a little tighter on giving foreigners jobs than the US, but from what I know TU-Delft is prestigious enough to attract employers despite these slight hurdles. (no facts on this part though) I don't really know anything about your field (I'll be applying for CS programs in 2011), so I'll leave the advice on destination to those who do have an idea.
