My proposed research is a critical analysis of human rights discourse. My background is in sociology & human rights, so I'm more comfortable with sociological theory. I don't aim to stay in academia after finishing my PhD, I want to work with NGOs/international institutions like the UN. Am I correct in assuming that having political science PhD (rather than sociology) will make me a more competitive candidate when looking for jobs?
How about in regards to admissions, which department (political science or sociology) tends to be more competitive? I'm looking at WashU, UCSD, Columbia...
Does anyone know if it's possible to have supervisors across departments?
